    Obviously, Chris Paul is a better player now and has been more consistent from year to year. But at the time, it was the right choice for the Jazz to take Williams over Paul because he was a bigger and more physically aggressive point guard, which was the style the Jazz played. During his time with the Jazz, I thought he was the better point guard, and maybe only second to Nash for awhile.

      It was when Deron Williams joined the few players with multiple playoff runs of 20-10 past the 1st Round, something CP3 still has only done once.
      All players who averaged at least 20-10 (ppg-apg) in multiple playoff runs past the 1st round
      - Magic Johnson x4 - 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991
      - Kevin Johnson x3 - 1989, 1990, 1992
      - Steve Nash x2 - 2005, 2006
      - Deron Williams x2 - 2008, 2010
      Deron Williams vs 60-win and Finals/Title Teams combined (20 games)
      - 22.6 PPG - 3.8 RPG - 9.9 APG - 1.5 SPG - 0.4 BPG on 46/39/84
      - and 3.3 TOpg - 3.2 Fouls/game
      - vs 2007 Spurs and 2008-2009-2010 Lakers
      Chris Paul vs 60-win and Finals/Title Teams combined (9 games)
      - 16.7 PPG - 5.6 RPG - 6.7 APG - 2.2 SPG - 0.2 BPG on 39/36/80
      - and 3.0 TOpg - 3.3 Fouls/game
      - vs 2012 Spurs and 2018 Warriors
      Chris Paul vs 60-win and Finals/Title Teams combined (7 games)
      Pre-Iguodala injury
      - 14.7 PPG - 5.9 RPG - 7.1 APG - 2.3 SPG - 0.3 BPG on 38/28/82
      - and 3.4 TOpg - 3.1 Fouls/game
      - vs 2012 Spurs and 2018 Warriors
      With stat-padding in 2018 WCF, too
      Game 1 - 6 points on 3/3 FG in the last 80 seconds down 12+
      Game 3 - 8 of 13 points, 1 of 4 assists after being down 20+ late in the 3rd quarter
      CP3 was also outscored and outplayed by Tony Parker and Steph Curry head-to-head in both of these series. The only time the most overrated PG of all-time faced a 60-win team or a Finals/Title team, he performed absolutely horribly on offense as well as defense in both instances.
      Against Finals/Title Teams and 60-win teams
      - Deron Williams wins in +5.9 PPG, +3.2 APG, +0.2 BPG, - 0.1 Fouls/game
      - Chris Paul wins in +1.8 RPG, +0.7 SPG, - 0.3 TOpg,
      - and Deron Williams crushes Chris Paul in shooting 46/39/84 to 39/36/80
      If excluding the 2 games post-Iguodala injury of the 2018 WCF
      - Deron Williams wins in +7.9 PPG, +2.8 APG, +0.1 BPG, - 0.1 TOpg
      - Chris Paul wins in +2.1 RPG, +0.8 SPG, - 0.1 Fouls/game
      - and Deron Williams crushes Chris Paul in shooting 46/39/84 to 38/28/82
      Prime Deron Williams was better than Chris Paul, but only due to a lack of longevity is lower than Paul all-time.

      Dwill made it once and got smashed by Spurs. Also cp3 has been a top 3-5 mvp contender for like the past 7 or 8 yrs (since 07 or 08). Cp3 might hav not made it to conference final but he had less talent around him in New Orleans and now in clippers the competition is harder. And even without playoff success, cp3 still achieved more than dwill and avg better stats and as I said cp3 is still a beast nowadays and can still win a ring whereas chances of dwill getting a ring and making all star are both slim

    Obviously history will favor Chris Paul’s career over Deron Williams. And if I had to choose one guy in there prime to be the point guard for my team, it’s CP3. With that said, from 2007 to 2010, Deron Williams was a top-5 if not top-3 point guard in the league. The Lakers were my team, and I remember those match-ups against Utah during that time period, when Deron Williams used to light us up. It’s unfortunate how his career ended but I’m old enough to remember prime Deron Williams and that version of him was an elite point guard and very much belonged in the same conversation with a Chris Paul, Steve Nash, D-Rose, Chauncey Billups or any other elite PG during that time.

      That's why Rondo was the perfect fit. One of the reasons why I think he's still a better player than most although he gets no credit for it. A PG that doesn't care to score, playing with scorers is always better than a shoot first pg playing with scorers.

      I think Cp3 could've won. D Will is a great distributor and was a great player in his prime, but he does try to score before pass IMO, but also, Deron Williams wasn't liked by KG and Pierce. When they went to Brooklyn and played with him, they said he didn't work hard enough and wasn't a leader at all. His defense also isn't close to Rondo's in Boston. Cp3 however, loves to pass and the Clippers sometimes have to force him to shoot because he always wants to get his teammates involved. He also plays great defense and is a leader. He is a different player than Deron Williams.

    Deron Williams at his best was also better than Chris Paul at his best. The only reason that Deron Williams won't rank higher than Paul on the all-time list is because Williams became irrelevant after his 5th season and only had 3 good playoff runs. Although Williams' 2007, 2008, and 2010 Playoff runs are superior to any run by the overrated Paul, Paul was consistent for a longer period of time. Paul's consistency in this sense is relative only to Deron Williams, his "consistency" on an all-time scale isn't that impressive considering his multiple playoff failures and never playing the best opponents, and the fact that he was outplayed in nearly all playoff series against notable PGs. (Billups 09, Parker 12, W-Brook 14, Curry 14)
    *Deron Williams 2007-2010 Playoffs*
    4 playoff series after the 1st round
    Faced 3 Title teams, 1 Finals team
    21.1 ppg - 3.7 rpg - 9.6 apg
    46% FG - 40% 3PT - 80% FT
    _____________________________________________
    *Chris Paul 2008-2009, 2011-2017 Playoffs*
    4 playoff series after the 1st round
    Faced 0 Title teams, 0 Finals teams
    21.4 ppg - 4.7 rpg - 9.4 apg
    48% FG - 38% FT - 85% FT
    _____________________________________________
    Considering D-Will's far greater quality of competition, his numbers are more impressive despite Paul's +0.3 ppg, +1.0 rpg, -0.2 apg in a vacuum.
    Paul is better than DWill career wise because of longevity, but prime for prime DWill was better. Only player along with Magic and Kevin Johnson with multiple playoffs of 21-10 past the 1st round
    Nash had multiple 20-10 runs but not 21-10. Though Nash is the only player with Magic and KJ to have multiple 20-10 runs past the 2nd round, D-Will had no 20-10 runs past the 2nd round.

    • @NobodyTouchesJordan
      @NobodyTouchesJordan Před 8 lety +1

      In 2007, Williams' 2nd year and first year as a full-time starter, he led the Jazz to the 2007 WCF where they lost to the Spurs. Unlike Chris Paul, Williams legitimately had little help when losing to the Spurs. And the 2007 Spurs went on to win the championship, whereas none of the Playoff teams Paul played against even made the Finals. The only teammate of Williams in double figures for the 2007 WCF was Carlos Boozer, who had 21 ppg on 53%.
      But even Boozers scoring was created for him by Williams running the offense. Only once in his career has Boozer had over 15 ppg in a series without Williams, when he had 17.4 ppg against the weak Nets in the 2013 1st Round. Williams had 26-4-8-2 on 53% in the 2007 WCF. For the playoffs as a whole, Mehmet Okur was his only other double digit scoring teammate and he shot a poor 12 ppg on 39%. Boozer was his only good help, and even Boozer's production was dependent on Williams creating his opportunities for him

    • @NobodyTouchesJordan
      @NobodyTouchesJordan Před 8 lety +5

      In 2008, Williams led the Jazz to the WCSF, averaging 22-10 on 49% for the playoffs. They lost to the Lakers who went on to make the Finals. Again, Paul has never played a playoff team that went on to make the Finals or win it all, but Williams in his first 2 years as a starter was already putting up great numbers and while playing against Finals and championship-caliber teams. In 2009, Williams' Jazz lost in the first round to the eventual champion Lakers with Williams putting up 20-11 but on a sub-par 41%. Paul in 2009 was getting destroyed and outplayed by Chauncey Billups in the first round.

    • @NobodyTouchesJordan
      @NobodyTouchesJordan Před 8 lety +5

      And in 2010, Williams' last relevant year, he averaged 24-10 on 45% for the playoffs and led them to the WCSF where they again lost to the eventual champion Lakers. Unlike Paul, Williams outplayed Chauncey Billups in the first round. In his first 4 years as a starter, Williams led the Jazz to a WCF, lost to 3 championship teams and 1 Finals team, and averaged at least 20+ ppg and 10+ apg in 2 playoff runs past the first round. Steve Nash (2 times), Kevin Johnson (3 times), and Magic Johnson (4 times) are the only other players to do so. Noticeably, the overrated Paul is not included on that list. Prime for prime, Deron Williams was clearly superior than Chris Paul as a player, but he didn't maintain his prime for a long enough time to warrant a higher all-time rank.

    • @NobodyTouchesJordan
      @NobodyTouchesJordan Před 8 lety +3

      Paul also played with far superior supporting casts compared to Williams
      - Tyson Chandler
      - David West
      - Peja Stojakvic - one of the best shooters ever
      The 2008 hornets held Duncan to 42.1% FG in the WCSF, the 2nd lowest FG% by Duncan in any playoff series, after the 2005 finals. Williams never played with a comparable defense in Utah
      - Blake Griffin, better than any of D-Wills teammates
      - Deandre Jordan, 2x reb champ (something DWill never had)
      - Jamal Crawford 2x 6man (DWill never had that)
      But doesn't have any 4 year stretch comparable to Williams in 2007-2010 even with much better teams
