Marrying someone you knew your sister wanted to marry doesn’t translate as “had done nothing wrong.”
That is a good point. That was the author, Laurence Leamer's quote. Thanks for joining the conversation!
That's what I thought
Jackie couldn't control who Ari liked . That's stupid.
@@Joelswinger34 Ari would go with whichever. He was himself a social climber. He was short, hairy and dark. His ambition required the ultimate trophy wife.
Jackie married Onassis for financial security, to get away from the Kennedy clan and to insure protection for her children. They both knew what they wanted and what they were getting.
Currently watching the series. It’s fascinating. Glad to see Calista acting again. All the actresses & the actor who plays Capote are excellent.
slim is so modernly stylish...she wears things so timeless and natural... even looks modern in this century...gorgeous
I agree. Thanks for joining the conversation!
From what I’ve read, Lee and Ari had connected first. Lee invited her tragically widowed sister for a Greek getaway on Ari’s yacht, not anticipating Jackie would “steal her bf”. A former President’s wife was a trophy, and Ari was every bit as much a social climber.
I thought Lee was so much prettier than her sister, and more talented, but how does a younger sister escape the immense shadow cast by the wife of a President?
It's true. Jackie did steal Ari from Lee (or at least, it can be viewed that way). Thanks for joining the conversation!
Jackie was the amazing beauty.
Not really..@@ybcarlebach266
Jackie first went to Ari's yacht, invited by Lee, after baby Patrick passed away. She was married to President Kennedy.
Lee was the prettiest, most fashionable and most probably lived fun life.
Dominick Dunne wrote a novel abt the .Woodward murder called “the 2 Mrs Greenvilles”.
Yes and they made a movie staring Ann Margaeret, too. Thanks for joining the conversation!
And it gave you a glimpse into that society.
Dominick ruffled feathers, though he was less confrontational than Truman.
I've adored reading Dominick's and I had felt his family as my own to love. Good people. ✌🏻

This series is so beautifully acted! I'm obsessed!!
We all are! Thanks for joining the conversation!
It’s sooo good. My husband is friends with the guy making out with Calista Flockhart (he doesn’t get a credit. He was a background actor that got pulled out to be a featured extra, got paid $50 extra and no credit.) as Lee Radziwill. I started watching this season because of him being in it, but I am loving this entire season so much. Truman Capote is such a fascinating character and the acting is great.
I know, it’s such a great series.
I love it and am obsessed with Slim Keith’s monkey pillows!
The series has been compelling!
Jackie straight up took Onasis from her sister. Bad form.
Yes, I can see how that would have been painful and then to still have to interact with them . Ouch!
Lee had an affair with JFK while married to Jackie.
“Pot calling the kettle black.”
Onassis was fascinated by Jackie. She was a trophy for him.
As a younger sister who could do no right, while constantly compared to an older golden child sister, i feel for Lee...
Episode 7 broke my heart. BEAUTIFUL BABE. It really brought the pain to the surface for how Truman felt, and his descent into total alcohol dependence and how he suffered for his addictions and proclivities!
Truth be told, Truman was a writer. What did they expect, after all? He DID immortalize The Swans. I’m quite sure only a few knew who Babe & Slim were , before this.. I AM ALL INTO THIS! 😂. Joan VS Bette was FABULOUS, so I was waiting & hoping.. THANK.. YOU..
The template for Bravo’s Housewives .
Carol Radziwill from the New York Housewives was Lee’s daughter in law.
@@kellyewers5692 Ramona Singer is Lee’s doppelgänger. Kristen Wiigs SNL comedic wino portrayal of Kathy is on point and is hilarious!!! I’m convinced, and if Kathy were to replace Ramona, we’d see the same crazy-eyes-pinogrizeo personality 😂 😂 😂
I'm not really in love with the TV show since it takes a lot of license with history, but the acting is excellent. Fun fact - Slim Keith discovered Lauren Bacall. I can recommend the book The Power of Style by Annette Tappert which has chapters on several of these women.
Thank you for that additonal info.
Ann and Truman were once friends, till Ann made a homophobic joke about Truman to friends. Truman used Ann’s “accidentally” shooting to spite her. Ann’s children threaten to sue Truman for wrongful death, but they never did.
Check ou t my video on Ann for more about that. czcams.com/video/eBverYp8fX4/video.html Thanks for joining the conversation!
The kids should have sued him ❤
Slim Keith was a blonde. Not a brunette like in the series
@@ann5765 That’s true; then again they’re taking creative liberties in this series.

Slim going after Truman, all the while screwing Babe's husband was shocking!
Yeah, it was a surprise and not sure how true. Thanks for joining the conversation!
I think Diane Lane is so perfect for the part of Slim Kieth. She is so beautiful an that jaw line! I didn't think I was going to like the show but watched it because she is in it and I am liking it now . I never could stand Capote. If you watch any of his TV appearances, he is such a creep. I like your videos on the show.
I like Diane Laner as well. Thanks for joining the conversation!
I think Diane Lane looks dowdy.
It’s probably due to her hair pulled back so low.
@@ybcarlebach266
Diane looks sexy. Certainly not dowdy.
Did you see Groucho Marx proposition Capote on the Dick Cavitt Show?
Diane Lane gets more beautiful with each passing year.
This is exactly what I needed to fully understand the series.. Thank you..👌
You're very welcome! Part two is coming!
These people were no different than trailer trash, just with way more money 😂
There's a world of wisdom in your comment!
💯 agree. They just do it in expensive clothes and homes . People are people, trailer or Palace
Spot on!
@@pamelahaltmeyer.1288 wow.. that's a little harsh.
The difference is back then women , as a rule, didn't have too many options. Very very few were able to have careers. The majority of women that were not married had to"take in sewing" or be domestic help if they needed to support themselves or God forbid a family. For most women, marrying well was the best they could hope for. If they were lucky their husband didn't beat them, cheat on them, or best scenario, they actually fell in love. It was expected from those who came from wealthy families as well. At that time it was usually the sons who inherited the money. The girls usually had a dowry that was supposed to attract a suitable husband. "Trailer trash", as you so kindly call those who live in poverty, don't have a hell of a lot of choices either. Although at least now if children study hard they can usually get a scholarship and raise above what their parents accomplished they're still at a disadvantage due to the choices presented and to snobs who call them trailer trash and don't offer them the same opportunities as they might someone a little farther up the socioeconomic ladder. The opportunities for them to meet and marry above their station are slim as people usually marry from the circle they associate within.
Be grateful if you're in neither situation and maybe have a little gratitude for our sisters who came before us and paid the dues that we don't have to pay, and the ones who fought for the changes that we are reaping the benefits from.
Agreed.
The Swans should have been more irritated about being depicted in Capote’s cliché-ridden prose. What killed Capote was his knowledge that he had become a terrible writer.
I think he just gave up. Thanks for joining the conversation!
I read Leamers book months ago, not knowing about the mini-series. Sorry I returned it to my community library. I enjoyed it.
Now someone else can enjoy it too! Thanks for joining the conversation!
the very best people share gifts.
you are doing a fabulous job as a documentarian. keep up the good work!
Wow, thank you so much!
Thank you so much for that nice, illuminating bit of commentary. I am interested in these people. It is amazing that they are able to live in the lap of luxury with absolutely no regard for the rest of humanity.
Lee Radziwell introduces Jacqueline Kennedy to Aristotle Onassis and then he gets together with her, and replaces her sister. If she was hurt and put off before by her father, this would be in addition. This is just so weird. I am surprised that Jackie did it. I wouldn't pick up with my sister's ex... And I have done x-rated films.. Lol.
Glad you liked the video. I enjoyed your comment! 😎
Penelope Ann Miller is a dead ringer for Babe! It’s uncanny how much they look alike! 🤓
I really appreciate your videos. It must take some research. Has anyone looked into the symbolism of the black swans used by Van Sant and adopted by the PR for the series? The Black swan theory is a concept in philosophy seems pretty apt for the series
It would be nice to learn a little more about that, if you could tell us more. Thanks for joining the conversation!

Jackie went through hell as a young mom. A husband that screwed anything that moved, then his brains are on her suit, where she could have died too., so if my sister wanted anything after all that I’d let her have it.
Capote swore it wasn’t Slim but Pamela Churchill. Her exes new wife. She of the many lovers. From Averell Harriman to many of the Swans hubbies.
Maybe he said it to avoid being sued. Thanks for joining the conversation!
A dtr of an acquaintance worked for Pamela in Paris and she was difficult. And mean

@@arribaficationwineho32 Pamela Harriman had been my client for years and yes, she was terse, but all of the women in that era and that "station" were the same or much worse. One of them became an Ambassador / Protocol director of some small pithy country and is a horrible, rude woman ( the worst, and I could not imagine getting the position )… It "goes with the territory"..
I feel most sad for babe, the betrayal was the worst thing he could have done.
This series helped me to understand my mother and grandmother so much better. Gran was a socialite and tried to create the same in her daughter. My mother disappointed my Gran by “marrying down”. My dad was raise poor and was happy living “low class”. My mother would always say “never trust a man to take of you”. My job most of my life was to keep her happy and do whatever she asked. She couldn’t afford a maid and cook like Gran, so I became one per her demands at the age of ten. They were both self centered and their lives revolved around acquiring the things they wanted. Accepting only perfection from those around them. While they ignored all their families needs and feelings. My mother’s favorite saying was “if you quit wanting you might as well be dead”. As for my Gran, she dumped when she realized I would never be pretty enough for my Gran to groom into a socialite. They both gone now and I grieve them and what could’ve been.
I do and always did adore Lee Radziwill and couldn’t stand her sister..and that was a child’s impression that only became more consolidated over the decades..Lee *was* beautiful, and Jackie did eat her life. I adore Lee.
It was an interesting rivalry. Thanks for joining the conversation!
@@JackMason-oq8lf but that’s all Jackie ever was..a trophy wife. Lee had spark and spirit and a personality. Real style and real class, and was by far the true beauty of the family. Lee Radziwill was a terrible snob.

Thank you for posting this well-crafted video. However, I am curious about the odd thumbnail. It is a mix of historic "real swans" and the contemporary actor who portrayed Capote from the FX series. (??)

What is sad abt his ruination after his book is that only socialites in NY knew who the ladies were. It should not have caused a rift. It was fiction
Good to hear your side of it. Thanks for joining the conversation!
Fiction has several sub-genres: science, historical, and realistic. The latter is the point of contention here. 📚
So you wouldn't mind if your "friend" spilled your confidences to the world. I only knew Mrs. Kennedy and her sister because of the former President, I knew nothing of the others but their acquaintance probably had all their suspicions confirmed. He was absolutely wrong.

What’s so tragic!!? They lived an extremely privileged life with all of the ostentatiousness that comes with it. Then they died like anyone else😳
Truman undoubtedly had literary talent, but it failed to anchor his intelligence in subjects of enduring human significance after In Cold Blood. He remained enchanted by the rich and beautiful. The Swans were all gifted; smart, amusing and quotable. Their beauty and style made them photogenic and newsworthy. Their shared tragedy is an emptiness and dissatisfaction beneath the public abundance, privileges and fun. Truman eventually realized even his God-given way with words couldn't endow their stories with deeper meaning. Frustrated, he wrote a salacious fluff piece about them laced with venom they would recognize. The Swans were his muses, yes: Inspirations for prose about human smallness and the impulses that cause it. So, he revenged himself, a life-long reflex, and got what he deserved.
I agree with you. If he had just gone a different direction and paid attention to his partner, Jack Dunphyn, who had the correct opinion of the whole NY society - imagine what he could have accomplised and how much longer he could have lived! Thanks for joining the conversation!

Too much...never enough ✨
Back here again to say: Slim Keith is the most beautiful and photogenic woman I've ever seen, hands down!
I’m confused about the timeline. Truman’s article was published in the 70s but the women’s dress styles seem much older.
Their relationship was in the 1960s and earlier
But again: The B&W ball happened in 1968 and all the swans attended...
Right and the article that made everyone so mad was published in Nov 1975. I think the confusion is that the article is calle La Cote Basque 1965 and that is because the story line in for 1965 - but again, not published until 1975. Thanks for joining the conversation!

Ann Woodward was a dancer in a chorus line in a club catering to men. After the performance, the chorus girls would accept invitations from the men to join them at their table. This is how she met her future husband’s father, who, it was rumored, she had an affair. He introduced her to his shy son. Marriage was not intended. Woodward’s mother, Elsie, was furious when Ann married her son. Ain’t love wonderful?
He was only 59 when he died. But Capote looked like he was in his 80s.
It’s “Jack-Leen” Kennedy Onassis, my dear. That’s how Jackie pronounced her name.
Wow the pretension is THICK
@@Miss_Meee Well I was just teasing. However that’s honestly how her family, the Bouvier’s pronounced it and therefore she grew up to pronounce it. I don’t know for sure. But it may have to do with her father’s family being French-Canadian immigrants. Possibly the “French” persuasion in the pronunciation. Very very wealthy French-Canadian family.
Her daughter Caroline’s name they pronounced “Caro-lie-ne”. In fact Neil Diamonds hit song “Sweet Caroline” was written about her and seeing her all over TV and the press particularly after her father’s assassination.
@@Miss_Meee Then again maybe Diamond is fickle or just getting old. I know I am
Inspiration
Diamond has provided different explanations for the song's origins. In a 2007 interview, he stated the inspiration for the song was John F. Kennedy's daughter, Caroline, who was 11 years old at the time it was released. Diamond sang the song for her at her 50th birthday celebration in 2007. On December 21, 2011, in an interview on CBS's The Early Show, Diamond said that a magazine cover photo of Caroline as a young child on a horse with her parents created an image in his mind, and the rest of the song came together about five years after seeing the picture. However, in 2014, Diamond said the song was about his then-wife Marcia, but he needed a three-syllable name to fit the melody
@@nurseKathyAndTheLas If you listen to the lyrics to Sweet Caroline and consider he wrote it with a little girl in mind, it’s sick. Lyrics are sexually suggestive.
@@TheDriftwoodlover you didn’t read what I posted above did you ? He has said the first inspiration was a photo of Caroline on a pony pictured with her parents. Formed part of it. The rest was written about his wife
I listened four times before letting you know that President Kennedy wasnt assimatednin the late 60s.
Who needs friends like that ???
Is nothing sacred
What I was looking for was the tragic consequences of smoking. Babe died of lung cancer and one other...in the Liz Razewll interview many years later at an advanced age, she is put together and attractive but dollars to donuts she had COPD. This is evident because of her breathing, seen as she draws air from her neck muscles.
Good observation on the neck muscles. I agree that smoking is awful!
I think that Babe Paley looked better after the reconstruction due to the automobile accident. Her's and her sisters jawline was off somehow. It was very broad and long, at least in my opinion. The jaw reconstruction she had to have looked much better to me.
Of course, if they had been honest about who they were to begin with, it wouldn't have been a problem.
Capote was so cruel. He literally murdered Ann Woodward with his vicious gossip and book, knowing she was depressed and a little push over the edge would suffice. She came from a decent family, her mother was among Kansas University's first female graduates and father a retired army oficer.
All this for using the f****t word for him once when he pestered her for tidbits one time too many.
I AGREE WITH YOUR ASSESSMENT. HE WAS A VAIN, CRUEL NARCISSISTIC, EXTREMELY FLAWED HUMAN BEING. HONESTLY, I BELIEVE HE WAS ENVIOUS OF THE SWANS BECAUSE HE COULD NEVER BE WHO AND WHAT THEY WERE: REAL WOMEN WHO HAD LIVES HE COULD NEVER TRULY BE A PART OF.
Woodward killed her husband
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Truman Capote betrayed no one. Truman Capote was a writer, and he wrote. Writers turn what they see and hear into myth when they write. If those women were too dense to understand the process by which reality becomes art, that was their own problem and not Capote's.

Lee and Jackie were both step-brothers to Gore Vidal; another prickly homosexual genius like Capote. Lee wasn't likely to ever attack him in court to help one of Truman's pissing-contests(which he kinda lived for and got mixed up in all the time - he had a hard time giving a shit about other mere mortals or their feelings). Like many idiot-savants, they have difficulty sorting out the idiocy and the brilliance.
Anne Woodward was never a part of NY society. She was a showgirl who married her way in. And women have no problem turning their back and exclusion to people they dont think they belong.
It's something one only feels but never sees.
Women have all the power. They just tell men that they do
Fancy women, sleeping and/or marrying to the top. Not sure they deserved the embarrassment but the way they shuffled husbands and lovers, they weren't expecting the writer to write about them? It's weird they were kind of naive about Truman. He was an unabashed social climber with a relentless memory. What I need is a line graph with all these connections lol
Didn't Lee resent her sister Jackie in part because Jackie married Onassis and Lee was having or had an affair with him?? I'm just going by the FX series.
Yes!
They all were horrible ppl. They still are today. Their is a lack of self respect as they displayed on the outside. The old saying “ Do right even when no one is watching!” (sic)

Lots of errors here. Slim Keith was a fashion icon of the late 1930s into the 1940s.
She was born in 1917, making her only 13 in 1930 and 23 by 1940.. She was a fashion icon into the 60's; not just her early days.
