She is the voice of my lifetime and I miss her so much I pray each night and play The Greatest Love of All …… It gives me hope … For when we find that special place that we’ve been dreaming of and if it should lead us to a lonely place ….. we will find our strength in love. There are many components that made her voice so special.
    1 - that god given pitch perfect tone. She could speak a page from the phone book and it would make you think it’s a song.
    2 - She learnt how to sustain notes and make her voice supple, free and elastic.
    3 - the vibrato, nothing more needs to be said on that vibrato. Flawless in sound until the end.
    4 - Melisma yes, kind of a factor although without it I think she still would have sounded the best! still impressive but many can do the same that must be stated!
    The most important of all, she knew when to sing soft and when to go hard. She added extra notes whenever she sang any YOU or OU word/vowel (almost in a way that sends a feeling that she was desperate to declare love you ‘you’ (whoever she was singing about). For example, I believe she sang IWALY about Robyn Crawford. I really do believe that was her saying, we shared a special something and I will always love that but I can’t give you what you need….
    When Whitney sang ‘Love Yoooouuu ou ou aaaa’ it was like she was hugging the person she was singing about through that one note. This example is why she was pure genius. She knew exactly how to portray the emotion. That went beyond her tone & any sort of learnt technique. This was Whitney’s biggest gift of all, making you feel what she felt.
    My whole point is, Whitney Houston never lost the ability to make you feel what she felt through song. Yes her voice changed some what in sound. But baby you best believe she used it in the same way as always and that ability was NEVER lost !!!

    Anyone who knew her personally within her musical capacity knew she did not lose any of her voice! Her voice became her only power and in order to hold onto fragments of dignity and power, she had to fool the puppet masters from time to time. While her behaviour wasn’t always in her control due to substance, her voice was mostly in her control.

    The range was not the same as her 80s-mid 90s career ( her best vocal years imo). However, her tone and ability were still there (her tone is best in the late 90s and 2000s imo). The power was also gone for the most part.

    • @PickleJarr

      We kind of have the same opinion. For me, her tone was at the pinnacle in this time period. Her voice matured and darkened and ugh it was just chocolate. Her duet with Bobby Brown in one song which I forgot, her tone was impeccable in that performance.
      I also loved her tone during BG era, but nothing beats her tone after it. It’s too bad that she lost quite a significant power and ease than she did when she was younger. But hey, that usually happens to belters and this woman went through a lot. Health issues, miscarriage, child birth, etc. all affected her voice by a lot but that tone remained glorious. Ugh.

    • @STACEYXRENEE
      @STACEYXRENEE Před 11 měsíci +2

      Toward the mid and late 2000s, she started to regress more and lost that power and holding those long notes. She still was great, but you can tell things were really taking a toll on her. I wish she knew how much of a great singer and person she was and just left Bobby and all the toxicity alone. Especially the addiction she had, I know it wasn’t easy, but Bobby didn’t really do her any favors at all, and just always left a bitter taste in my mouth. I’m sorry, but he didn’t seem joyful to have such a queen and lady like her… her brother introduced her to drugs at a young age of 14 I think or something like that, and he was just not a good person. There was so many bad things in her life. No matter how much fame and recognition and love she got from fans, she still was very depressed, and just didn’t know how good she was.

    The highlight of the 2000 Grammy and Pre Grammy party, could be highlighted in that Clive (and Whitney) taking ownership in that they pushed her to sing a whole hour concert for the Pre Grammy party. I’m sure Clive asked (requested) and she had to oblige. I’ve ALWAYS thought her Grammy performance was snubbed because her voice was tired and overworked from the night before. That’s part Clive/management fault, and part Whitney. Her voice had some really amazing moments…but it was hoarse. She rebounded during the infamous Arista 25th a few months later, and her voice was soaring. But 2000 was the beginning of her voice truly not cooperating with her.

    She didn't COMPLETELY lose her voice, but it was severely damaged. And it happened pretty fast too. In 1996, she was still able to sing most of her old songs in their original key, but a year later, she simply couldn't handle her old songs the way they were originally arranged. And it all went downhill from there. A decade later, her voice was in tatters.
