  • On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Paul Mecurio ( / paulmecurio ) answer your Cosmic Queries on planets and more from the CZcams Studios in New York City.
    We start with one of the most inciting questions: if we had an ocean or bath tub large enough, would Saturn float? Neil tells us about the interplanetary workings of Saturn and why a “piece” of Saturn would float in a puddle of water. You’ll hear why Saturn’s rings might only be temporary. We discuss the density of water and the science of building boats. Discover more about the Titanic and the density of ice.
    Then, we explore the world of neuroscience. Neil tells us why he loves tracking the progress of modern-day neuroscience. We ponder if eventually psychologists will be replaced by simple brain adjustments once we can locate what parts of the brain cause certain emotions and behaviors. Find out the history behind the phrase “we only use 10% of our brains” and how it’s been flipped from the original statement.
    We discuss if Jupiter is a failed star. Find out what our solar system would be like if we were a two-star system. Learn more about thermonuclear fusion. We dip into tidal science and investigate tidal bulges, the Moon’s relationship with the tides, and we explain why we’re actually traveling “through” low tide and high tide. All that, plus, Neil shares why putting humans on the Moon was the valuable cosmic perspective we’ve encountered yet.
    Recorded at CZcams Space NY.

    • @terabytekiller528
      @terabytekiller528 Před 4 lety +1

      I certainly feel your pain, in regards to the lack of interest. Not so much as i pertains to one single subject, but more the out right dismissal of the other wise implied interactions that may occur as a result. IE; someone says there has always been carbon in the air..... so why should i think its so much worse now. When science for yrs can show the last time it was present in the air at the lvls of carbon that we are reaching today, the world was under mass extinction, and climate shift that took thousands of years to change back to the state we enjoyed before the industrial revolution. Yet the same person who can agree with that, still thinks its stupid to think about the science it takes to get the cores of ice, we test to get those very results. Possibly even questioning, or in some cases claiming complete fraud, in the validity of the science that has been undertaken in the first place. Cause, why? Oil is what we got, so thats what we get??? sounds stupid when u say it like that, but its all relevant. if i had to choose principals, or states of mind, that would one day determine the state of my civilization... and the choice was - blissful ignorance... OR scientific skepticism. - .. which would you rely upon to save your children, your home, your planet, and or your entire race. < Intentional period, not question mark. I suppose its not a question to me, because the very idea or concept, that blissful ignorance is even a very real world option, just makes me sick. Lots to say i suppose. any thoughts, tubeaverse?

    Dr. Tyson, it's always a pleasure to hear what you have to say, and it's a great thing for science that we have someone like you to publicly champion the causes of higher learning and higher thinking. I think you got some information on the tides slightly incorrect, however.
    On the equinoxes, the tidal effects we see from the Sun will be negligible at the poles. There may still be tidal effects from the moon on those two days, because the moon doesn't orbit along Earth's equator; it orbits at a 5° inclination to the plane of the ecliptic, which means it will be anywhere between 18.5° and 28.5° shifted from equatorial orbit. This means the tidal effects from the moon at the poles will vary based on the moon's position during its orbit of Earth and are independent of the seasons.

    Hey, Dr. Neil, it's interesting that you mentioned the brain here. I am struggling through a series of DVDs called "Understanding the Brain" by Dr. Janet Norden. It is amazing to learn about the many parts, such as the Telencephalon, the Nucleus of Cumben septi, and the many ways that things can go wrong if development does not occur properly. We see with our brains not our eyes; in fact our senses merely allow our brains to interface with the world and the universe in which we live.

    Just the fact that we CAN go to the moon is motivation enough for me! It would definitely fulfill my entire life to just be able to step out onto an alien world. Although, Mars would be far more interesting to me than the moon.
    I can certainly imagine the perspective one would gain just by looking back at Earth from the moon. The pictures give me perspective, but to actually be there & witness it myself...

    I was having a conversation with my colleagues about why oil floats on water, i had to explain about water displacement and how this keeps ships afloat despite the hundreds of tons, i didn’t know you included the air as a counter to the mass of the steel though, i just thought of the ship as an impermeable mass being squeezed by the water below. Back to the oil though, could you do a little bit on density and how this causes different types of oil to float and resist being permanently emulsified with the water.

    Love the show and these are always really fun an interesting! Altho once i noticed it, i can not stop noticing how much Neil interrupts people, everyone he talks to. And not just by accident. It is always when someone else starts to speak or even respond to him, Neil just cuts them off immediately at the first words.. again and again, and then having the audacity to call out others when they interrupt "Will you let me finish my sentence?" .. Really? Like you interrupt someone 100 times and they interrupt you once and even that is unfair? I really really hope that Neil becomes more self aware about this, even if you do not think others have anything important to add, they might, and also it is just basic manners. Having this big presence and fame i am not sure how someone could approach him about this, but someone could do it. I do not think he does it on purpose, by now it is just an ingrained habit. A wonderful communicator with lots of interesting knowledge and views, don't be like this, be better!

    • @cfgauss71
      @cfgauss71 Před 4 lety +2

      You're right. On the most recent Joe Rogan experience, the interrupting was so bad that the YT commenters jokingly called it the Neil DeGrasse Tyson experience, featuring Joe Rogan. It doesn't bother me too much, though, because I usually want to only listen to Neil. But it is definitely rude at times, and I think it's become a habit. So don't expect to hear less of him!
