  • Hillsborough River State Park is a really nice place to hike and explore along the Hillsborough River. You can see and hear the roar of the rapids as the water flows along the bluffs of the river. A trail leads over a historical suspension bridge built during the Great Depression in the early 1900's. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed structures such as the bridge, trails and recreational areas around this area of the river. It became a public park and now today is one of Florida's best state parks. I enjoy hiking along the trails seeing the wildlife and taking in the views of the river. It's a wild place that takes you back to old Florida. Enjoy the adventure and thank you for watching!

The Hillsborough River is the primary source of drinking water for the City of Tampa. It forms in the tranquil Green Swamp and from here, it travels 54 miles to Florida’s largest open-water estuary, Tampa Bay. Along the way, it passes through rural portions of Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough counties then into residential neighborhoods, a 1,300-acre reservoir and an urban landscape of concrete seawalls and industry. As all rivers do, the Hillsborough River shares an intimate connection with its watershed.

I've been there many times. Taking a canoe down Hillsborough River is a wonderful experience. You can canoe downriver from there to Dead River Park and then if you are really adventurous you can go downriver from Dead Rover Park to Jonhn B Seargent Park. The section between Dead River and John Be Seargent Park is hard to navigate, that is the only section I have not been been on. Then you can leave John B Seargent Park and head down river to Morris Bridge State Park which is a stunning trip. Then down river from there to Trout Creek State Park which is also stunning and in the heart of the forest. Then down river from there to Lettice Lake State Park and then down river from there to Rotary River Park but that section is heading into houses away from the park areas. Its really nice to have that wilderness area when you live in Tampa or around Tampa. Its all so close to a lot of city. Thank you for your videos. God bless you.

Yep though trout creek isn't a state park, regional park only costs $2 (machine sometimes doesn't work, can write a note and leave it in the car, or get a yearly hillsborough county nature parks pass week days before 4 pm there's an office near sargent park). Haven't done that infamous 18 runs as they call it (between dead river & sargent) but I have kayaked quite a ways up trout creek (easy to miss where it is on the hillsborough, unless super observant or know where to look), pretty as well, but not completely unobstructed. But still do-able, at least when the water is a certain level. New river here (assuming that's what that creek tributary here) looks pretty small for that being the lower section of the creek, but still a major tributary I suppose. Haven't tried cypress creek (land o lakes down to lettuce lake park) or blackwater creek (upstream from the state park here) but I know both are bigger than trout creek. But for sure people get the best bang for their buck/ energy with exploring/ going down the hillsborough river. (Even though of course rivers get a significant volume of their water/ drainage size from creeks or other tributaries, whether people realize it or not)

@p Yes, I have heard of Blackwater Creek, and so I went hiking into Blackwater Creek State Park trying to find it, but all I ever found was a small trickle of water that crossed the trail I was on. But I think I never made it to Blackwater Creek itself which is deep and stronger from the images I have seen. If you go there make sure to watch out for ticks. I got a few on me from my hike that day in the tall grass of the roughly maintained trails. It is an amazing place though. Also Lower Green Swamp and McIntosh Preserve just north of Plant City are really nice. McIntosh Preserve is really small but a nice place for a gentle hike, and Lower Green Swamp is just beautiful. I especially like it near Itchepackesassa Creek where you will find a bridge that crosses the creek a short hike from the car park. I have never hiked the farthest reaches of Lower Green Swamp either but every time I went there, I saw some sort of wildlife like deer, hogs, owls, and other birds, insects, and all sorts of amazing plants. If you go east towards Lakeland you will find Walker Road Park, and you will up river on Itchepackesassa again. Walker Road Park is not very wild but it has a really nice manmade lake with a bit of forest around the creek that runs along side it that is stunning. There is always wildlife there and there is a nesting pair of Eagles that live in the forest along the creek. When I was there, I saw the Eagles in their nest in a tall tree, and I got to see them flying as well. And then there is the Green Swamp Preserve to the North, but I have little experience there. Its amazing all of the tributaries that eventually run into the Hillsborough River and then into Tampa Bay. I can only imagine what it must have been like there before everything was settled and logged. At least Florida still has some amazing wild places to enjoy.

@@zdreif Blackwater creek is one of the bigger tributary creeks of the hillsborough, definitely worth the 2-3 mile hike (I didn't find it either the first time, and have revisited it a few times). You're the 2nd to highly reccomend lower green swamp, noted. Ichepackesassa creek eveventually merges into blackwater creek, and of course blackwater joins the hillsborough relatively before the state park with rapids (haven't kayaked up there yet, probably a matter of time). I've traveled some variety of watersheds in the state, mostly central and north FL, and while north FL has a lot the rest of the state doesn't have, some regions of west central FL are definitely up there with any of them, surprising or not, even for how many people & urbanization there is here. Not all about beaches, coasts, & towns here in FL, but I'm probably preaching to the choir at this point

Was a gator he took a video of. North American crocs only found in SE Fla (coastal Miami-Dade, etc) and over much of the Everglades.

The river is so beautiful I love the rapids ❤️ I think that it's one of two rivers in Florida that got em. I drew a sketch of them when I was a teen. Joe have you ever done a video on the old fort on the other side of 301?
