I just picked up a copy of your book about 7 days ago and it is extremely interesting. It was such a terrible event. I read a total of 250 people died in the cash. Members from a Catholici Church were a large number of the passengers. I believe I read 1,600 passengers originally left Kendal plus others that got on the train at stops along the way.. So terrible how the coaches smashed into each other ending up in a riven.

One of my uncle's was on that train. They went to Dr.Caves Beach that day,he was not injured badly lost many of his friends also many lost lims. I understand pickpockets were responsible for that disaster in their attempt to cut the wires for lighting inside the coach they mistakenly cut the brake hose instead.

That's the story being told, but I don't know if there was an independent investigation, or whether the company latched onto that story to deflect blame.
The thieves may have cut a wire causing the accident, or the train may have been overcrowded or the cause could have been a malfunction, because of lack of maintenance. That's why I wonder how it was determined that the thieves caused the derailment.
Today, there would have been an investigation by a government agency similar to NTSB in the US, and it would not be left up to the railway company to determine the cause, since that would be a major conflict of interest. However, this was Jamaica in the '50s.
