Bruford performing "Adios A La Pasada" [Goodbye to the Past] on BBC's Rock Goes To College broadcast on March 17th, 1979.
Annette and I worked closely on this - I offered the music and she handled the words. Apologies to any of our Spanish speaking friends who may take issue with the title 'Adios a la Pasada' as a translation of 'Goodbye to the Past'. They may be happier with 'Adiós al Pasado'. No excuses: that should have been checked, but stuff moved very fast around the production of these albums, and that one slipped through. I've just noticed, interestingly, that neither the English nor Spanish title actually appears in the song.
I was totally on board with the sentiment of the words, especially around:
"Say goodbye to the guilt
Leave the past behind
Leave the pain with the past
Lighten up the cross, it's a long journey ahead
You are innocent victims of circumstance and coincidence
Be gentle with yourselves
Forgive yourselves
Release yourselves from the past"
It may seem like a slick band, but this was our first live gig, and on national TV too. Mistakes were bound to happen. On this track for example, in the general on-stage chaos, Dave's keyboards have a short blackout, either electronic or mental, at 4'08"; Annette inadvertently reverses lines two and three above at 4'14"; and there is a small train wreck at 5'.30" as the band approaches the very climax of the song. To err is human, to forgive is divine.
Jeff Berlin reminds me so much of a young Jaco Pastorius prowling around the stage with the brilliant Weather Report - the same exceptional command of the instrument, the same central position in the fabric of the music. Weather Report had spotted an interesting avenue for development - the (re)integration of world music influences within jazz - that catapulted Jaco to international fame and marginally eclipsed Jeff's fast rising star.
This is all OK. I loved playing the song and it's more than energetic enough, but I do wish the drummer wouldn't rattle around the kit quite so much though.
Annette Peacock - Vocals
Bill Bruford - Drums
Dave Stewart - Keyboards
Allan Holdsworth - Guitar
Jeff Berlin - Bass

Bruford this song saved my life. I went through very hard times last year and I didn't see a way out of my problem, however, the lyrics of this song gave me a great boost to get out of there. For that I will be eternally grateful with you. Also, I really love the melody, I still can't get it out of my head because it's beautiful: every note, every second, well it's a really magical song, what a wonder is this life!
Amen! When I was in college, and discovered this record, I couldn't believe this song existed. It gave me hope.
Music has the power to heal
Amen
What a wonderful anecdote but I'm sorry to hear you were in such a bad place. Always know that the moment, even the worst moment, passes.
@@jonsilence Thanks Jon.
Love that Annette Peacock.
Very dramatic. Love the interplay between Holdsworth's soaring guitar work and AP's vocals at the close of the song. A real treat.
Outstanding performance by the quintessential supergroup.. Annette Peacock really nails it.
As fresh and exciting as it was forty two years ago!!! RIP Allan
What it is....is ! This is.... what it is! I was so obsessed with this album. All my school buddies were listening to the Who or Led Zepplin, I was cranking this tape out very loudly out of my Datsun automobile, in my school parking lot quite frequently! I have become the musician thanks to Mr. Bruford. I sure hope Bill Bruford understands how much we appreciate his music, his drumming independence skills, his musicality! Peace from Detroit MI.
I could have also written this. at 61, I still quote this lyric
Wudup from Ann Arbor MI, a huge fusion, prog, and jazz/rock fan. Originally a hip hop fan. Since COVID I have collected tons of vinyls and fallen in love with bill bruford. Much love!
One of many notable aspects of this spectacle is how effortless everyone seem to be while performing such an above median human skills job...
Allan oh Allan... miss you!
Annette is soo good
I was crew on a flight leaving Montego Bay Jamaica around 20 years ago. All the passengers were boarded and the aircraft door was closed. The gate agent pounded on the door. When I opened it, she was standing there with Bryan Adams. She said that she had informed Mr Adams that his first class seat had been released and was now full. He was very gracious and said “It’s okay, I’m small, I don’t mind sitting in coach.” Every eye was on him as he walked back to his coach seat. After take off, a young teenager asked me if it would be okay to ask for an autograph. I told her that I would ask and he invited her over for a chat. I remember that she had a cassette of one of his albums which he signed. She was overjoyed. Really thrilled. Mr Adams was so down to earth and humble. My guess is that young lady no longer has a cassette player, but still has the signed cassette.
This beautiful song has been with me since 1984 when I was luck enough to have a roommate in school that had a couple of Bruford records. I spent that summer listening to this record and reading Doug Hofstadter's GEB, trying to somehow integrate Discrete Event Simulation and whatever we called back then "AI", and also met my wife. Best summer ever. Everything clicked.
Here we are in this precisely now. What a wonder is this life! Absolutely! 43 years since I first heard these fantastic musicians and I’m still filled with awe.
Perfect, holdsworth, bruford. Lyrics spot on, love you all deeply
I love this song so much. Annette is a gem and deserves so much respect. The whole band is pushing boundaries. Thanks for creating music which has true depth and value.
This entire concert, though brief (around 40 minutes) is pure gold. Completely amazing musicianship, cohesion, solos, grooves and songwriting. I watched the dvd a few times years ago and will have to get hold of a copy of it - real magic! Oh yes, Annette is great too - even better and more chilling in the next song "Back to the Beginning"!
@@jhonnydrucker4519 Annette is also a lovely person who I have known since 1985. I saw several of her gigs in the UK but never with Bruford. I did see Bruford with Holdsworth once and in 1980 with John Clarke. They were an amazing band for sure. Holdsworth , Bruford and Annette remain 3 of my favourite musicians, truly inspirational.
What a great music! Beautiful poem!
I had almost forgotten about this young and beautiful lady, and very talented singer Annette Peacock... Hmm... for nearly 45 years I didn't listen to anything related to UK .. I have followed closely Allan Holdsworth's career since the mid 80s until 2017 ( RIP Allan and John Wetton ) but I was completely unaware of this lineup with Bruford , Berlin , Peacock , Holdsworth, Stewart... Thanks to YT I have discovered this remarkable band and this excellent music, I can't believe that I was mostly unaware of all this for so long despite always looking for new stuff but so happy I discovered those tunes played by very famous musicians ... Perhaps it's a good thing in some respects since I would probably have had a huge crush for Annette P.... What a beauty... 🥰🥰
Best. Song. Ever.
The most profound lyric. I memorized it by heart many years ago and repeat it to myself very often. The beginning is a statement of existential truths. The advice enumerated in the second half will keep sane.
What a great song - I haven't heard this before.
Amazing song and performance. When I first heard Peacock’s I was not a fan. However, years of listening to these songs and I think she fits the song.
I'm the same. I really like her contributions to the Bruford catalog. And it took some real confidence to get up there and perform with them live and it's also no small feat to always come in at the right times!
Fantastic. Reminds me of Lifetime.
True alchemy that touches the soul and leaves me misty-eyed.
Happy Birthday...🍀.great song and still exciting!
Annette.....
This album is burned into my mind from 40 years ago. It's amazing to see it performed. What a great band and such great songs.
It's a great accomplishment to have pulled this off in front of a bunch of immature, impatient sweaty college kids on a Saturday night. This a testament to the unique musical art that Bill was making at the time.
You mean performing for a Rock n Roll audience? These are pro musicians you twit
.... and I like the sound of the drumset very much.... 🎶😁🥁
The funny thing about musical mistakes is that so long as you proceed as if the mistake were not a mistake but a deliberate choice, the listener can never tell you made a mistake at all. I did notice the train wreck you mention, but Annette Peacock strutted right over it as if it wasn't there. I've never heard her perform before and I was most impressed. This is a very healing piece of music, with great playing from everyone involved. Whether the drummer should have "rattled around" less is a matter of personal taste, but it's undeniably great rattling.
Lots of people in the comments for this and the "Back To The Beginning" video rag on Annette Peacock - I think what she does is perfect for this material personally, but it's also worth noting that she knew exactly when to come in and with this material that's not trivial!
the only spoken word prog i can think of really.
Alan is the man !!!!
Awaking and listen unique rock goes to college... Greeting from Brazil! Lendengs! Happy Birthday Bruford
Happy Birthday Mr Bruford Happyness !!!!!
Allan,master of masters
Never ever seen this before. I’m so moved. One of my favorite drummers playing with one of my favorite singers. Thanks for putting this up
Fabuloso....puro talento...
A musical masterpiece. All the members of this band are geniuses.
“Adiós Al Pasado” is the correct traduction
Oh, I've missed the live première. Thanks, Mr. Bruford. Tears of joy and reflection at the end...
High School I got this album . Opened my ears and eyes to so much
This is a gem ! Thank you for showing us these wonders of your musical career, Dr. Brufford! I hope you spent a birthday as you deserve! 🍾Without a doubt, you are the best in the history of music.
beautiful, thanks for the amazing material Bill 🙏 hope you had a great birthday 🙂 greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Jeff Berlin and Allan Holdsworth are on fire! Clearly, this was BB’s best band. (Except, of course, for all the others.)
lol, this and his last yess lineup and 1st crim and double trio ...yep...
@@davidryan7386 Double trio would mean six, you mong.
Mind blown.
First live gig????? My goodness. I'm a pro drummer and the level of musicianship here is quite frankly on another level. You make the world a better place. May Allan RIP. Gone way too soon.
Wonderful music, grandious musicians,... and a very inspiring aera.. 🎶💕🙏
Love this song...remind me when I was in highschool in mid 80's
WOW
Unbelievable!
That pause just bfore the end!
WHAT?
xxx
still love it!!
Purchased their first album after reading a review in a uk hifi mag when it first was released, went on to buy others after, but, why wouldn’t You!!!!
This song has been a life long friend … ❤️ great video … thanks 🙏🏼
Brilliant - this is SO lovely. Poetry set to … not jazz exactly, not rock either, not ANY box, it’s direct expression, real music, played by terrific, daring, utterly unique musicians and poet/songstress/artist…she’s even doing a little ‘performance art’ touch with her moves, glances, demeanor, calm presence-I’ve been a fan of yours for a long time, Mr. Bruford, NEVER heard this before, love it-thank you! [not sure why it’s credited as ‘Needn’t End in Tears’ but maybe that’s “artificial intelligence’ working it’s stupidity?]
Is this where Sonic Youth got their ideas.
Kim sounds a lot like this woman here.
Very cool and what a unique style, my first listen.
Terrific stuff.
happy belated birthday!!! love this song, and this performance especially. the lyrics are a good reminder for me.
This is so great!
Maravilla de músicos y composición! Gracias porque esta es la música que corre por mis venas!
Great stuff Bill! .... as always.
Excellent performance
Very cool! Love the message and delivery.
Sounds great Bill! All the best!
BTW, the correct translation of "Goodbye to the Past" to Spanish is "Adiós al Pasado".
MAGICIANS...on top of musicians.
It has a look and feel of '70s Rock. Wait, is it '70s Rock?
I wish you all the best!
At the time, this stuff would have been considered quite outré for rock music.
Rattle on! Am so glad I bid adios - if only for seven and a half minutes - to the past of the wonderful studio version. (It took a minute to do so.) A.P.'s words would be pure pretension from just about anyone else. Love it and loved it live. Thanks again for sharing.
This performance makes me tear up! Lovely tune
Jaw dropping genius here.
Alright I was going to complain about the title but it's not necessary. Thank you.
A masterpiece.
By the way "Goodbye to the Past" translates into Spanish as "Adios al Pasado" in every Spanish speaking country on earth. Probably a little late to change the title but true.
Read the description. He mentioned it!
Amazing vand and performance.
Great video.
Great stuff. This Rock Goes to College is a real gem. I was fortunate enough to see the Gradually Going Tornado line up in Liverpool Uni (supported by Brand X). Great gig. Great band.
Yes
nice bass work
Waaw after this workout I'm at.. BrandX😉👍
Yo Vi éste mismo concierto en Atlanta, Georgia. 1978. En Agora Ballroom. Inolvidable.
The incomparable Alan Holdsworth on guitar
Interesting cut. Always have been a Holdsworth fan. Bruford as well, especially with Yes. Never heard the lady. Sounds unique. Very late 70’s/ early 80’s.
She did some very outside stuff with pianist Paul Bley, too.
God I love her.
ТХЕ БЕСТ ! ¡¡¡ !
💙💚WOW💛💜
Shucks. Part of my youth, treasurable.
Zappa's favorite guitarist - Allen Holdsworth.
If you are going to state something at least spell it right. *Allan
Grandissima e peculiare voce. Grande Bruford, il batterista migliore del '900. Qualcuno mi dice come fa Bruford a produrre quel suono secco del rullante? Colpisce anche il bordo oltre la pelle? Grazie
They used to have this whole show from start to finish...then Peacock disappeared now some are back in one-offs.....damn........
Holdsworth isnt playing guitar.Whatever it is...is...magical.Gorgeous tune
I'm just amazed to see Holdsworth holding a worthy-yet-conventional guitar!
Allan my hero
This is more punk than The Pistols could ever dream to be.
Apparently, some people like to just say things, without really thinking what the words mean when placed together.
i do not understand berlins tone. I had same tone from having to small and underpowered an amp which then distorted at band levels. I mean as an occasional effect, sure. but as his bruford live default?
✌️🤘😎👍🖖
God, Bill, you're bad as me, what with all the apologizing for things nobody would notice had you not brought it up. LOL. But that's okay, better than okay. I'm very relieved to find that I'm not the only one that obsesses about details. You have a lot more company for that on your level. Here in the mud with the hoi polloi it's much less common.
Jeff Berlin's influence was not inconsequential. I, for one, stole a few of his licks to play on guitar. He was amazing, no doubt. And Allan was my favorite guitarist. And you were mine and my bass player's favorite drummer. The conversations we used to have about your snare drum. . . . A keyboard player in a rival band was a huge fan of the band and Dave. He could play all your stuff.
IMO Jaco Pastorius did not "eclipse Jeff Berlin's fast rising star" - Jeff played with the very best and was given an instructional bass column in the coveted Guitar Player Magazine and Bass Player Magazine.
plus, he kept his head on straight.
Beatiful song! But...I wonder why "Adios a la pasada" and no "Adiós al pasado" (the correct translation for "Goodbye to the past")...
Mr Bruford offered an apology for any incorrect Spanish usage-read his video description-direct from the composer.
@@rhythmfield , thanks!
@@martinbarrios7920 no problem brother
Berlin dont had the tuba tone here, more distortion
Bono Estente, Channel 9 wants to state a little correction:
pzez ze ze ze pze, it its not "Adios A La Pasada" but "ADIOS AL PASADO".
Butros butros Galli.
Quelle horreur quand elle essaie de chanter!!
Ce groupe était vraiment fantastique !👏👏👏👏
