  • There has been a massive change on the layout .... After a lot of thought and due to a physical issue I have had to completely re think the layout which has meant a brand new design. In this video I explain why and what the changes will look like. Join me in my new adventure!

    Wow! Steve! What a big decision mate! Sometimes it's hard to decide to perform wholesale change, so very well done! I'm sure you'll be much happier with the new setup - especially as you can get to it!!! My only advice would be to make sure that the gradients aren't too steep, and to test them before committing to them! Oh, and check that you can reach the back of the layout and into the corners! Mine is only 30" wide at the widest point, but I struggle to lay track at that distance because of the height of the layout! So just make sure you check! I'm sure you know this stuff, but just thought I'd mention it! I'm definitely going to enjoy the journey of the new build! All the best, Ian.

      Yes Ian, I have been testing those gradients all week now, following your example. Maximum width is 30 inches so are reachable but as before I will start from the back and work my way in. I intend to have a complete smooth trouble free track laid before even thinking about glue anything down!
      Regards
      Steve

    Well done on making the big decision to start a new layout but with all the learning from the previous one. The plan looks good, try to keep gradients to 2% if possible particularly if running long steam trains, diesels will handle more but a key consideration as nothing is more frustrating than watching a train struggle or skid every lap. All the best and look forward to watching the build.

    • @lynganddistrict
      @lynganddistrict  Před rokem

      Yes I realised as I tested the loco's and a rake of four carriages that the gradient needed to be at 2% so it's made for some some changes as to where I place the cross overs.

    Greetings Steve 🐲 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Well, that was a surprise 😮 sometimes a clean start is the best policy 👍 I've got dodgy knees 😳 so I feel your pain 🤕 It's exciting to start again, especially with the knowledge you've already gained 👨‍🎓 so I will expect you to make rapid progress ✌️ Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️

    That was a bit of a surprise after all your hard work sorry to hear about your back hopefully it’s not too bad but looking forward to seeing the new layout progress happy modelling cheers Al

      Thanks Al - to be fair, it needed doing as although I learnt a lot from doing all the work, there were issues with the track, the switches and of course that damn bridge. I can now access the layout much easier and get into my shed for my other stuff I need from day to day.

    Well that is a surprise for a wet Thursday morning. I like the plans for the new layout. It isn’t easy to start again but there was no point persevering with a layout that might cause you injury to try to access, and you do have the benefit of using all that you have learned in your new one. I was finding it hard to get the levels but I think I got that from the last image. It did look as if the gradient for the grey line after the crossover to the yellow is quite steep to rise over the yellow and blue lines going under it. What is the gradient for that section? I also like the arrangement into the TMD. I am pretty sure sure you are going to need to be careful wiring the the triangle section to avoid a short circuit as the polarity reverses. But it does provide a great way of turning whole trains if you want and your go to guru on wiring will be able to help you with the kit you will need. Look forward to seeing this grow over the coming months. Stephen.

      You were right about that steepness as you will see form the next video Stephen! I read the wrong percentage and realised after some testing I needed 8ft to pull 4 carriages, but I got there in the end.
      Regards
      Steve

    My thoughts are similar to Stephens regarding the gradient and accepting the limitations of duck under sections. I found it difficult getting trains to readily climb anything more than 2% without a very long run in. Woodland scenics risers go to 4% but i'm not convinced. I have enjoyed watching you build your previous layout and I look forward to following this build.

      Hi Gordon and thank you for the comment. Yes I have been experimenting with the gradients and will publish a video shortly showing the results. The layout is 12ft long and I need an 8ft run at 2%, and it curves so its going to be tricky but I should be able to do it.

    Hi Steve 50 videos in and it's time to have a change, I think it's for the best that is one thing I don't want to do any more is be on my knees. In the next video I'm show the change to the two rooms it's now going to be three but the mega room is shrinking from 8 meters down to 6 meters but gaining a room of 8 meters by 1.7 meters, two of them are going to be like yours, but the big room is going to have a double stack swing bridge so I can get into the middle. Love your new plans and looking forward to seeing it develope. Look after yourself. Colin

    • @lynganddistrict
      @lynganddistrict  Před rokem

      A double stack swing bridge? wow I shall look forward to seeing that! I always knew that the first layout would not be the last so made the decision earlier than later.

  • @thegrowler-blackwoodngauge

    Hi Steve - big changes afoot ! It would have been hard to rip out all that work and effort but needs must if you're having difficulty in ducking under the layout for access. Liking the plan you have - looking forward to seeing progress over the coming weeks and months. Can even see where some certain drawers could go for stock ! Cheers Euan

      Thanks Euan - had to be done I'm afraid plus it gives me the opportunity to relay the tracks properly this time!

    Hi Steve, that’s a surprise mate, although I was wondering recently what you were up to as I haven’t seen an update for a while. Worth doing though as it will only get worse as time goes along. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Just be careful with those gradients because as I found out and the reason for the re-start on my layout is those steam engines won’t get up them without a struggle! Very annoying as I found in the end!
    Cheers for now mate, John

    Hi Steve,I made the same decision on my layout,wasn't happy with the duck under,so like you revised the whole thing and started again,been a year so far and nowhere near finished yet,good luck with it all.

    • @lynganddistrict
      @lynganddistrict  Před rokem +1

      Had to be done Bob - crawling on my hands and knees was literally getting to be a pain in the back! This way I can get in easier and so can visitors and I've manage to create a bit more wriggle room in the middle as well!
      Regards

    Wow what a huge change, looks as if it does exactly what you want, never an easy decision to rip up and start again, what radius are the curves

    • @lynganddistrict
      @lynganddistrict  Před rokem +1

      Colin, for the outer curves on the main lines they will R4 and inner at R3. The third track will be R2 and R3 where I can as this will be the "coal line" and local line so won't need long rakes or carriages.
      Regards

    Hi Steve, good to see you back, if you were not happy with the old layout for all the reasons you stated then yes it makes sense to change! I did it myself so I know it’s not an easy decision but if you we’re struggling with your back it’s a no brainer! Liking the plan it’s gives you lots of running options and capabilities. Are you going to use the TMD as a sort of fiddle yard as well as a TMD as you have a number of long sidings? Also from my own experience of having track close to the edge there is the risk of trains falling off or being knocked when you lean over the layout, just maybe something to consider? Cheers Gary

    • @lynganddistrict
      @lynganddistrict  Před rokem

      Hi Gary - yes, because of limited space the TMD will double as a fiddle yard, so that as the locos run around the main tracks I can "play" on this area. The edges of the boards will all have a small plywood "wall" to stop anything dropping off, and without the foam means the whole lot is 25mm lower so easily reached over.

      Sion - I already have the 2% risers so thank you so much for the offer - I'm using them as a guide but creating the inclines with plywood and wood so that I can more easily wire up and maintain the rails. If you lived nearer I'd be over like a shot!
