Funny-ish story; y’all mentioned that it would be valuable to introduce RATM at the beginning of a history class…
Well, I used to teach HS English and, while intro’ing a unit about racism, beginning with the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”-an objectively amazing book (albeit, one that takes a bit of ‘warming-up-to’ for 15/16YOs)-I always started this unit with relevant [big quotation marks here] “ Woke “ songs throughout (modern) history. Artists like, Nina Simone, Anti-Flag, Public Enemy, Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, AND RATM-plus a ton of others-and I will tell you, my kids got WAAAY more out of the lessons by utilizing this strategy than they otherwise would have.
[Side Note-RATM was always very popular…especially post-2016…hmmm]

Of course, RATM was way ahead of their time (either that or, sadly, things just haven't changed that much). Back in the day, I was a young white metalhead, and Rage helped me become aware of a lot of the discrimination that was happening around me that I was completely oblivious to. I was embarrassingly naive and ignorant to the real world, and I'm eternally grateful to bands like RATM for opening my eyes.
Things haven’t changed much. We just have camera phones and social media now. 😔
This one is hard to dissect. I love all the theories. The chorus is talking about the hypocrisy of politicians who are pro-war and pro-family. They rally around family values, but have no problem with the military industrial complex. As far as the “bulls on parade” part, everyone has a different idea about that. Could be what you guys are talking about, or it could be a reference to a “bull market” in economics. Great reaction!
Knowing how well read ZDLR is and how his lyrics contain plenty of double entendre, it very well could mean all those things. Take Vietnow for example, the line "Check out the new style Ollie found" refers to both Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, the innovator of the Ollie (Zack grew up in Long Beach, CA, a hot spot for skateboarding since the 70s) and Oliver North, a conservative American political commentator and retired USMC Lt.Col. that had a radio show from 1995 to 2003.
The phrase “Bulls On Parade” refers to notifying/warning others when cops/soldiers are in the area and to be ready to defend yourselves
I think it's really prison culture. Dudes in prison call the guards cops and bulls. I assume anyone who calls a guard a cop been inside. The parade is when the bulls/cops walk the block. But that's just what learned on locked up raw. 😂😂😶
I always read it as a reference to Wall Street. When stocks are going up it's referred to as a bull market. Bulls on Parade are the capitalists that push for the US' never-ending wars around world and against the marginalized at home and manipulate the media to keep the public onboard.

De, I completely feel you. When it comes to insurrection, that is not a tool that belongs to any one particular political ideology. Its basically an active pursuit of a revolution which generally means you're doing something physical. Showing up at a centralized location or multiple locations. Its holding signs, chanting the message and sometimes it turns into a bloody battle. Sometimes it does. When non-violent protest can't produce the change that the people are looking for, unfortunately it can dissolve into violence. We hate to see it go that way but it can. The powers that you guys are talking about in relation to this video and song are the powers that regular, working class people of ALL ideologies need to contend with. No matter which president you like better in the last 20 years or so, working class people are all in the same boat. We need to wake up to this reality. There has not been a presidential administration in my lifetime that has DEMONSTRATED that they are looking out for the protection of marginalized people or the totality of the non-wealthy class regardless of ethnicity or race. People need to realize that we are all contending with a political class establishment that provides for its own interest no matter who the president is at any given time.

I loved watching your Tool videos, as seeing someone get to appreciate that level of "Art Rock" for the first time is a True Gift and takes us back to our own reactions of being blown away by them for the first time.
Rage absolutely never misses. Tom Morello actually has an Honors Grad in political science from Harvard so you know this man is deeply connected to seeing the corruption and hypocrisy and Puppet Shows that take place to blind people.
The entire band is extremely aware and woke allot of people up to the illusions cast on them.

It's very likely you've heard in passing a track like Chop Suey, but literally any of their songs are incredible from every angle and the Duo of Lead Singers is quite unique and something I know would flabbergast you.
The other one is Avenged Sevenfold, which are true Metal, but in such an instrumentally delicious and savory way that the vibe will hit.
Again, hard to miss with any of their tracks.
Out of the classic bands you absolutely have to at some point do a Beatles & Pink Floyd reaction.
Beatles are interesting, because they went from pop band to Greatest of All Time over night due to Bob Dylan misinterpreting a lyric on Help and introducing them to Cannabis as the legend goes, so they actually started out as 'sellout' type music (although still absolutely brilliant musically) into some of the most technically proficient pieces in all of human history up there with Mozart & Co.
For them I'd recommend "I Want You" off Abbey Road or "Tomorrow Never Knows" off Revolver, the album that started the entire Rock & Roll arms race. The song sounds like it was made in the 2000's but was in 1967. When most dudes still had to wear suits on Stage.
Pink Floyd you again can't miss, understand they are fully Concept Albums and each song flows into the next, with The Wall being a full Rock Opera.. but listen to 'Time' or 'Money' off Darkside.
I guess finally as a caveat if you enjoy Pink Floyd you could throw on The Flaming Lips, which is the closest thing to that type of 'Space Rock' we have today. They blend Electronica with Rock very very well. "In the Morning of the Magicians" would be a good track to start with.

This song is about the military industrial complex in the United States and specifically the Republican party's role in propping it up.
Back in the '90s, they were the party of family values (before they went all in on porn star hush money payments and grabbing them by the p*ssy). They "rallied around the family" while pushing for war and greater military spending.
The second verse is really the crux of the song: "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal"
Basically, the Republicans won't spend money on social programs for those in need, but they will line the pockets of their military contractor donors.
What's really sad is that now both major political parties in America are from top to bottom owned by the military industrial complex. The Democrats now are very much like 90's Republicans. They pretend to care about 'their sides' social issues to get elected, but behind the schemes they're all lining their pockets with bribes

I was there in the 90s. We were revolutionary and had a purpose. But then we were infiltrated and made to be silent. Whatever we did, especially with race issues, was co-opted and shut down. So our only advice is to be true to yourself and make change in your own circle. One day our individual circles will form one big one.
Don’t hate your neighbor. We are being divided on purpose. So take your little corner, bring the revolution, and trust that one day soon we can all join and overthrow the tyrants.
Most of their songs are just bars and bars of truths and exposing injustice. Know Your Enemy, Down Rodeo etc. are super dope songs. If you decide to react to them, always pick a video with lyrics since the lyrics are super-important.

Metal has ALWAYS touched on these issues. I have met alot of melonated people that think metal is racist, and it is actually very inclusive. It accepts all, and metal bands sing about this. We are a family. Metal is about cool concepts, but also about real life. Metal is love, my guys.
"Bulls", a "bull market" and "bull runs" are also investor terms. Those are the big dogs that make millions off of pandemics, pharma companies and other "inconveniences" that they profit from poor people.
Zach is saying they display their wealth while others suffer.

The political party at the time was pushing "Family Values" as their talking point. If They Rally Round the Family, but their pockets are full of millitary and police brutality, then we get their real intentions. Rage was always aware of the things that Chomsky wrote and warned us of.

I’ve really enjoyed watching you guys process these songs and the fact that they had commercial success in the 1990’s. It’s made me reflect a lot on the differences in the world we lived in then and now. And the difference in experience between a white kid who was into rock music and a black kid who was into hip hop at that time.
The documentary about Woodstock 99 is very representative of my experience as a rock loving kid in the 90’s. I think late Gen X was just a perfect storm for angst and aggression with no productive outlet. We saw so much hypocrisy, but were so out numbered that we could never make our voices loud enough to effect change. So we worked on mastering abrasive insolence, as like a form of protest, I think.
As a 40 something mom now, with a deep love of history, I think Rage might have planted a perfect seed. They gave us something meaningful to be angry at. They taught those of us who cared in heavily segregated areas that the system did not actually work for everyone the way it did for us. They taught us to ask questions and form opinions about “controversial” topics that our parents and teachers would have shielded us from. And while we obviously didn’t run out and change the world dramatically in the last 30 years, most of us still want to be a part of changing it. We at least aren’t out here saying dumb things like All Lives Matter and those old Rage fans I know are all definitely raising more socially conscious kids than there were in the 1990’s. I personally think that meaningful change might be more possible as we become the old people and I really hope we get the chance to lift young revolutionary voices the way our generation’s were not.
And if you haven’t learned yet what a revolutionary bad *ss Mary Morello (Tom’s mom,) is, you should. She is everything!

Hi Guys, new subscriber, I just watched your reaction for Killing in the Name Of. This was early 90s and the Rodney King beating and LA riots. You asked what people than thought now, well I am a white 64 year old women and this music is still prevalent today. It's addressing the worst of society. Honestly as a mother I didn't let my teenager listen to it as it was pretty harsh for young ones, I did the speaking , we are one and I will advocate that till the day I die. Peace and Power.

I think this overall viewpoint is supported by the fact that his verse states "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes, not need... just feed the war cannibal animal." There's a super energetic call to what is actually a Passive style of resistance over violence here slid into the mix that asks the listener to realize that all they're doing to violent protesters is "filling the cells" and then your response is right back to "Rally round the family, with a pocket full o' shells" which says that to keep doing this over and over is to just to rinse-wash-repeat this whole mess over and over. The existence of the band, their name, Zach's lyrics... you could all say they are their way of encouraging folks to find INTELLIGENT ways to protest that can disrupt their lil cycle here instead of participate in it.

I love you guys though I'm not a fan of this format, since half the fun is watching people react in the moment, catching a groove or a bar in real time. I can't imagine watching you guys react to something like Down Rodeo and not seeing the reactions as they happen. I realize that this helps to take copyright claims entirely out of the equation, but at far too high a cost. Just an opinion, it's all love.
