Why MON MOTHMA Was Crucial for the Rebel Alliance's Survival and Victory

- Senator Mon Mothma is usually seen as a background character in the original and prequel trilogies, but she's played an incredibly important role in guaranteeing the survival of the rebellion. Without her the Galactic Civil War would've ended very differently.

Given how the New Republic went in Disney Canon I almost wish Mothma had the same fate as Legends just to keep her from being responsible for the NR's many failures. (TLDR: an Imperial agent poisons her by throwing a drink laced with nanobots in her face during a peace meeting. She survived but was weakened to the point she could no longer hold office. )
With the exception of Darth Vader, everyone suffers from Disney canon.
And chewie he doesn’t get hit by that moon
@@GenerationTech and we lost the coolest super weapons The World Devastators.
I'm pretty sure most of us would prefer legends content over what Disney says is star wars canon
@@hkxeno001 they are cool but way to op.
I love how Genevieve O'Reilly voiced Mon Mothma in Star Wars Rebels as well as playing her in live action.
She's one classy lady.
She was in Episode 3 as well wasn’t she?

Senator Mothma. The woman, the myth, the legend.
The problem with the Sequels is that they make the Rebels/New Republic even more incompetent than they already were
You mean to tell me that in 30 years the New Republic leaders were so incompetent in setting up a new government that they became the laughing stock of the galaxy (dialogue from the Mandalorian) and didn't do anything about the growing First Order who were building Death Star III ready to blow up an entire system at once?
Rebel leaders tend to be poor government officials. Also, deep cover spies in the NR did not help.
@@robertnelson9599 That's the thing
I get that the rebels were... well, rebels, good at tearing down a regime but terrible at building a government but people like Mon Mothma were senators and government officials
At least they should know the basics of a government
And aside from the building a government, how in the hell did they miss a new regime rising? At least go rebel against that before it gets out of hand and Palpatine somehow returns
I would argue that legislators are typically terrible at running things. Governor-> chancellor is a better route. Having said that I actually enjoyed the new republic early struggles, thought it was quite realistic. Within a few decades you had new generations that grew up after the galactic civil war and treated individuals like Leia as war mongerers. It’s similar to how Europe was in between wwi and wwii. Some people never believed that a Second World War could happen.

@@GenerationTech I get your point and comparison, but the in-between WWI and WWII was a bit different
In both cases it was a continuation of the previous war, that much is true but for different reasons
The Germans were punished too severely after WWI having to pay a big amount of gold, lost a seventh of their land and other things
WWII and Hitlers rise to power was because the German people were sick of it and the Allies (mainly Brittain) took a bit of pity and allowed the Germans to rise up again and reclaim their former glory with the hopeful intention Germany could be an ally and a trading partner
I don't know if this also happened in the books or comics but in the movies none of that is mentioned
From what I understand is that the First Order is just a remnant faction of the Empire and is out for war and to reclaim the galaxy just for the heck of it, not because of some 'unreasonable' punishments or anything like that
Honestly, I feel that if the empire had not built the death star then the rebel leadership would not have united as they did and simply continued to bicker amongst themselves, attack weaker imperial targets and so forth. The moment you tell people you have a nuke they unite against you.
You're gonna love Andor. This is a salient plot point, actually
Ironically the Death Star united the entire Galaxy against Palpatine. When Tarkin destroyed Alderaan, he made it glaringly obvious that the Empire was a genocidal regime that posed a real danger to the public. The Rebel Alliance swelled with new recruits and the Imperial military faced widespread acts of sedition, defection and petty sabotage. Armed resistance had become a matter of survival.v
Mon Mothma is someone a reasonable person would be convinced to join, whereas Saw Gerrera isn't. It takes someone respectable like George Washington to make a group a genuine alternative state and not just a terrorist organisation
Maybe they should work together for variation and tactical confusion
I would argue that Saw Gerrera _was_ such a figure, but only until the death of his sister. The before and after presents an image akin to that of Mao Zedong vs self-proclaimed 'Maoists' like the Shining Path, bombing random populated areas and boiling young children to death.
She's more a John Adams.
yup and thats why people in colombia for example dotn trust the rebel guerillas because they have become so corrupted due to dealin in drug money to fund their revolution.
I thought Mon Mothma wanted to hit the archive on Scariff because she realized what devastatingly effective weapon of terror the Death Star was, but she couldn't get a conscience and the rules she was working under didn't allow her to launch such a large attack unilaterally. Once Jyn got the ball rolling, Mon was able to send support to a battle already underway.
I would love it if Disney opened up a Garm Bel Iblis story-telling-avenue, for the THREE FOUNDERS of the Alliance to Restore the Republic were: Mon Mothma of Chandrilla, Bail Organa of Alderaan, and Garm Bel Iblis of Coreilla. There's SO MUCH MORE story to be told. 🤔
Leia's story in Claudia Gray's SW novel Bloodlines would be a solid sw film spinoff imho :) she gets outed - feeds her son Ben's backstory big time!
And more emphasis on Padmé’s legacy
In legends the alliance was built on three pillars Mon Mothma, Garm Bel Iblis, and Bail Organa. Garm was the military genius, Mothma had the the vision of glory and boldness and Organa was the moderator who's he the two together.
I think the moment that cements her position is in rogue one when she send the rebel fleet on her own authority to support admiral radus and rogue one despite the rebel council decision. A gamble that paid of big time
I think she knew they had to destroy the Death Star and was grateful that Jyn managed to get the ball rolling.
Allen’s life seems so chill and exciting. I’m glad I’ve tuned in for years now to see him and the channel evolve.
He definitely gives us an education, brilliant guy.
@@lamarravery4094 love the boxers used to hide a persnickety light in this vid lol
My sister calls her Mon Mothra all the time, thank you for settling that discrepancy
My favorite Mon Mothma moment is when her eyes lit up like a fangirl when Bail told her he was going to contact Obi-Wan
Mon Mothma is both a hindrance and a helper to the Alliance. On one hand, she's entirely right to want things to change, and takes action to do so. But on the other, she wants to restore the Republic, a corrupt, broken institution. Despite having lived through countless years of Republic beauracracy, and seeing all those it failed to help along the way, she wanted it back. And it turned out the same way.
Additionally without a Jedi Order (with it's own share of failings) to support the Republic. Something that was also mentioned in the Expanded Universe how much more difficult it was for the New Republic because to that.
Under Mothma the Republic was genuinly.... decent, but when she retired it became just as bad as the first one
“Democracy bad, authoritarianism good, give me likes now”
@@wildfire9280 You have missed the point so badly that a Stormtrooper would cringe.
@@wildfire9280 They never said that, they said that she was right to fight authoritarianism. They were pointing out how corrupt and morally bankrupt the republic was, and the fact that she didn't plan to improve on it, especially given that the Republic was only a democracy in name, it was more like a bureaucratic organisation, run like a large religion or company rather than a democratic nation state so to speak.
Thanks for this analysis of Mon Mothma’s leadership of the Rebellion. Hope the Andor series does her character Justice.
You’ve got by far the best SW content on all of CZcams
Did you really just reference a 60+ year old Godzilla movie? Awesome! I have just come across your stuff lately and I'm loving the way you are presenting the content.
I am glad you brought us this information while going commando and wearing no socks.
Because Mon Mothma control Monday's, everyone hates the first day of the week, especially the empire.
It sucks that Mon Mothma in Disney Star Wars chose to restore the Old Republic in the wrong way aka returning it back to its terrible status quo pre-Palpatine and making it worse than before. While in EU Legends, the New Republic was truly a breath of fresh air that it managed to stand strong and prove itself to be a better successor than the Old Republic.
Disney Star Wars in a whole is just inferior to Legends Star Wars.
That is debatable. The Old Republic lasted over 25,000 YEARS. The New Republic didn't even last a century in Legends. The New Republic was grossly incompetent when it at war with the Vong. Then after the defeat of Darth Cadus, it ceased being called the Republic and became the Alliance.
The New Republic in Legends lasted only 20-ish years up to the Yuuzhan Vong: after the fall of Coruscant it disintegrated, and a new successor state was formed, the GFFA (Galactic Alliance), as a merger of the anti-Vong states and with a new form of government (e.g. a formal ministerial role for Jedi).
Legends, inspired by the post-Soviet wars of the 1990s, consistently painted the NR as a flawed democracy undermined by ethnic tensions: aliens mistrusted humans, imagining them to be equivalent to the speciesist Imperials (not entirely wrong, as many Imperials defected to keep their power; and Luke and Leia turned out to be Vader's kids - to some nonhumans, the Empire/Alliance conflict appeared to be a purely intra-human political issue). In localities like Corellia, Koornacht and Bakura, the NR's legitimacy came under strain as cultural groups and species mistrusted each other and carried old grudges into democracy with them; at central level, events like the X-Wing series' nonhuman plague (I forget the name) and the Bothan/Camaasi crisis all undermined credibility of various key Rebellion-era cultures.
Then, when the Vong arrived, their militarily inferior forces was able to conquer Coruscant so easily precisely because they sent advance agents to scout out simmering tensions, and stoke the existing ethnic rivalries to pull apart the Republic from within. Finally the victorious GFFA was formed precisely by and from the one truly multiethnic and meritocratic force in the galaxy, the only one effectively resisting: the Jedi.
Personally I find that a far more interesting political background to the cartoonish crisis of democracy portrayed in Disney canon (as well as the dull obsession with superweapons and superpowers that other Legends authors focussed on). But anyone who thinks Legends NR was a strong, stable and noble democracy wasn't really paying attention.
Wrong...Even in the EU the Republic had many issues and it wasn't no beacon of hope as it lacked the centralized institutions that kept the Empire running on a day to day basis. They experienced plenty of unrest, aggressive alien advances in backwater worlds, the Empire remnants and their fleets wreaking havoc on NR systems, Thrawn, and the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy that crippled them. I'm so glad the EU stepped out of the bubble to also indicate the NR was weak and decentralized holding on a significant portion of the Galaxy. Authors decided to step out of the bubble of George Lucas' (black and white OT events) and portray both sides for having both great and bad people. Also another EU flaw is that the main Star Wars cast behaved like a Justice League (even with the fact that the main OT characters acted pretty much like that) during that era.
@@stevenbaumann5911 Well, the Old Republic had a legion of Space Wizards on it's side. 😁
This is one of your best videos yet! Really bringing a background character into the spotlight!
That “She had a really hairy Wookiee” line needs more recognition 😂
Always enjoyed your videos. You have nice analytical thinking on the star wars universe. Keep it up.
I found Caroline Blakiston just breathtaking in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983, 20th Century Fox, Richard Marquand, John Williams). She is age 89.
She has a certain grace and stillness, along with a clarity of diction that makes her memorable
Love your videos, long live Generation Tech.
Hey Alan I would love for you to talk more about starweirds since they've only been mentioned on this channel once or maybe twice and I think they could make a good video either on a list or a dedicated video
Great summary on this important Star Wars character! I can't wait to see more of her in Andor. Btw, I think your videos would be easier to follow without distracting background music.
Mon Mothma deserves a series
Thank you.
I've liked her character since I played the Dark Forces and Jedi Knight games back in the day.
I've wondered this since the episode dropped. How did the various rebel cells know where to go after mon mothmas speech? Especially without tipping off the imps
Probably had pre determined coordinates just waiting for the sign.... the sign being her speech
I love the Babish reference at the beginning. I too enjoy having a variety of choices of what to eat.
The republic always broke rules of engagement
Great video
Love the look!
Good to see you dressed smart casual for all the Mon Mothma fans. Much appreciated 😉
"There was a princess and she had a hairy wookie"......
🤣😂🤣😂👍👍
Mon Mothma's investment in local defense forces ultimately paid off in TROS.
I like your new backround
Saw was dope. One of my favorite non-force users.
The leader who understands nearly every situation they are in.
Her speech was so powerful
Without all hero's(luke, solo, leia, ahsoka) the rebellion would have won eventually it just would have taken them longer with more casualties
we could really have a movie for mon mothma
Which if you haven't done it already you should do a video on what possibly would have changed if steel had survived instead of Saw
Mon Mothma reminds me of Elend Venture from Mistborn series. If not for the idealists willing to do the hard work, a rebellion can only end on bloodshed and not in peace.
Bail did way more to help ships supplies help , mon seemed to never stick her neck ever except pulling the switch on the ghost
We haven’t seen a lot of but she would probably pull her weight considering she had ends up as their leader
That and she was part of the glue that kept it all together. Without her, the Empire would have won and did a defeat in detail on the pro-republic forces. The problem was, she (and those similar to her) were blind to the problems of the Old Republic... and thus _made the same mistakes_ and even made worse ones, especially since Leia (Mon's planned successor) got ousted as _Vader's daughter_ which completely sank Leia's political career.
Would love to see Agent Kallus in this show.... Just even a brief glimpse of him
Jes i agree and wedge antilies is also a underated rebel let me know if agree or not
Adam looking mighty handsome with that haircut. Whose ya barber g? 🥵
Mon Mothma, Maria from Sound of Music and Mary Poppins made me attracted to Pixie-haired women

Hey nice hair cut!!
With the war of Separatists verus Loyalists there was a natural divide between rebels since most rebels were originally of this split. The Outer Rim verus Core split hurt the Rebel Alliance as well.
Wonder what happens after the sequels many some type of warring states period or just a slow descent and the a rise of another galactic order ideas?
She also understood that the empire was trying to paint them as bloodthirsty criminals. Something saw gurrera didn’t.
Actually, Saw knew the Empire considered him and Mon criminals. He just didn't care.
Nice boxers Allen 👌 👏
Like the hanging shorts brutha
You should do a star wars themed cooking video
Forgive for asking but did you ever do a vid about invid nest (sp?)and the early rebels?
I don't think it's obviously stated but Mon Mothma was actually funding the early rebellion out of her own pocket. Before the Aldhani heist. That's huge.
Honestly my favourite character in all of Star Wars. In Legends she was just kinda there, but the new canon really started to do something with her, make her an interesting part of the story and improve her character. Can't wait for Andor.
Did the Relic ship require humidity to grow armor, also David's bioweapons in Alien Covenant?
Can you please continue the separatist alliance vs earth series please
What's the music y'all use in your vids?
“It had a princess, and a really hairy wookie” i see what you did there 😅

If someone was guaranteed to do it right, I could get behind a Mon Mothma movie or mini series. A political thriller with murder and intrigue.
Mon Mothma Master of the Fabian strategy
I would have a question : what happened to the Worlds of those officials who rebeled openly against the empire, for Laila we know but for the others?
Brutal. Brutal is a point of view.
I have a question what happened to earth vs Star Wars series
Mon Mothra FTW
Are there any series that fold the spiritual/psychic side of the jedi with the intricate politics of the republic?
Mon Mothma was a bigger threat to the galaxy than the rebel terrorists claimed that our beloved Emperor was .
Let's not forget that the Galactic Senate was severely corrupt , some people might even describe it as evil .
The Galactic Senate directly caused the the Clone Wars , and many other major problems for the Republic .
And who exactly was a major member of that corrupt Senate ?
Mon Mothma !!!!
And when she lost the power that she craved , she started a civil war .
Emperor Palpatine had just put a end to a Separatist War , and almost immediately Mon Mothma started another one .
She was the leader of a terrorist army that openly declared war on the citizens of the galaxy .
She directly ordered the deaths of millions of loyal Imperials .
She wanted the Emperor dead so that she could have his power for herself .
As soon as Emperor Palpatine died she immediately assumed control of the galaxy and 30 years later ( according to the sequel trilogy ) she still had control .
Mon Mothma was no hero , she was in fact the biggest threat that the galaxy had ever seen .
I ask one question of anyone who disagrees .
How many times did Mon Mothma times did she actually pick up a blaster and engage the " enemy " herself ?
The answer is none , she sent others to die so that she could fulfill her endless hunger for power .
Oh. I noticed that you have not your magnificent blue and yellow background. If someone took you imprisoned - make a video about masterful evok's tactic and that you love an evok plush.

Padmé Amedala could’ve been a great rebel leader too if she was alive. She’s an idealist like Organa and Mothma.

She always looked sad to me... I mean, I understand why, she had plenty of reason to be depressed... Still, it seemed to me like she never actually celebrated the Rebel Alliance's victories...
She really just wanted the Old Republic back with no fixes to the system at all

Mon Mothma!? To much FAN SERVICE!!!
Who would have thought that Mon Mothma would be the character with the most 'meat' to her story in the on screen canon franchise.
And she got the Mon Calamari to join the Alliance.
Considering when the original trilogy was done.. Yes..The wookie was indeed hairy.
Mon Mothma is like John Adams.
It was pretty clear in the prequels that Anidala were doing it. They share a bed and Anakin is shirtless etc
Cool videos. It would help if you do not change your tone of voice while narrating. The sound of a few words get really low, which increases the effor to understand what you are saying.
