- This is a replay of alive stream showing the tube pigments I use to make sure I get the colour of the shadows right.
For realist il painters (or acrylics) this video will dispel a few myths and help you make sure you get the colours of your shadows right. Hint: Don't use complements!
This is a follow up of the first webinar I gave on this topic here:

Colour doesn’t have to be hard. To find out more about how this approach to colour can help you mix colour accurately, see value more clearly and paint with natural colour, grab my free 6-part email course “The Keys to Colour” here:

Best wishes and thanks for watching,
Paul
This is probably the 45th time I've watched this video. It never stops giving benefits! Thank you thank you thank you!
Watching this for 1hr 45 is time better spent than watching some hollywood blockbuster movie for me, thanks Paul.
Your palette looks like an abstract painting. I love that!
Hello Mr.Foxton I've learned so much watching your complete videos.
The best thing I liked was your color palette, and that you shared it with us....
So, glad you are feeling better 3 years after. LOL!
Hi Paul, I really enjoyed learning about colours and shadings ,I have being painting acrylics for 4years ,and have started painting with oils this year ,it has help me a lot ,and put me in the right direction ,thank you ,
Dom ,youghal co cork. ,Ireland
This was incredible. Thanks so much for sharing this amazing video. We are so lucky to get this information for free.
Scotty Simpson you’re very welcome
I'm on your email list but have not opened email from you until recently. Glad you are able to paint and teach full time now and have recovered. Hope you will be painting and teaching for many years to come. You are somewhat unique, Muensell with a full palette not a limited one! I feel Muensell theory and a limited palette is something of an oxymoron. Your way is the correct way
Love this lesson, very enlightening. Thank you!!!
Your videos are a wonderful resource. I've learned soo much. Thank you.
Some instructors find it useful to have folks with questions in the chat to use all caps. It's much easier for you to pick out.
thanks Harry, that's a useful idea! Glad you like the videos, too :)
Exactly what I've been looking for regarding color, which has been very hit and miss trial and error for me. Just ordered Munsell book and will watch all your videos. Thank you.
You're very welcome Elizabeth. Message me here or get in touch at paul - at - learning-to-see.co.uk if you have any questions about anything.
Hi paul! Your video really helped, thank you!
Paint a little of each of yellow, orange and green into the forground to pullit all forward.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Hope you are well. I enjoy realistic painting. Regards from a cold and locked down South Africa

I know it's quite off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Khari Keaton try flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
@Arturo Patrick yup, have been using Flixzone for since april myself :D
@Arturo Patrick Thank you, signed up and it seems to work :) I appreciate it !!
@Khari Keaton happy to help =)
Thank you
very useful advice thank you,
i used to assume BLACK was the hugh/colour for shadows (with some transparency of course) but now, ive seen the light colour which includes reflective light from neighbouring objects more like green etc
Yes. Usually, a shadow colour will be mostly influenced by the local colour. So if an object is a bright orange, the shadow colour will be a lower value orange.
That will get you 90% of the way there in most cases. Then, take into account reflected light coming into the shadow, and the colour of the object that is reflecting that light. The shadow colour and the colour of the reflected light mix a little.
With our orange example, if the reflected light was being reflected from a blue object, the intensity of the orange in the shadow (the chroma of the shadow colour) would diminish, being cancelled out a little by the blue in the reflected light.
Bear in mind also that the MOST important aspect is VALUE. Get that right, and you have a lot of leeway with hue and chroma.
Hi Paul, just finished watching the How to Paint Shadows stream, my question has to do with using the Burnt Umber for the edge shadows on all 3 of the objects. Why not use Raw Umber which you have stated is a "Yellow Orange" on the Lemon, Burnt Umber " low value middle orange" on the Orange and Pear? Is it because you mixed Burnt umber in your light lemon values? Can you restate when you would use Burnt Umber, Raw Umber and Burnt Siena to lower the values of different local colors on different objects. Thank you , Joel
Please give the link to the munsell neutrals that you mentioned near the end of your video after explaining the grey scale. Thanks
Good good videos....love the tough ones...TAB
Dear Paul, Will I be able to use your method using only natural daylight by a west-facing window? If so, how far away from the window should I be? I am struggling using the color checker as each little change in angle makes a huge difference in value. Thanks- Jim
thank you!!!
You're very welcome Sofi :)
I enjoyed this. Thank you, Paul. Tomorrow I will be painting shadows.
Would you print out the name of that medium you use. Your accent made it difficult for me to catch what you said. Thanks!
Thank you for your great lesson and sorry to hear about your health condition in the past two weeks :(
Thanks Giovanni. I'm doing much better now :)
Glad to hear that!
That’s hilarious we had an outdoor cat that had indoor privileges that did the same thing
I see you
❤
cadmium orange speckles added in places plus cadmium yellow orange halo around that neutral highlite in speckles to bring up the chroma? not sure about the chroma of the orange from michael harding. There are newer chromatic reds than the cadmiums my teacher even years ago used to use to get the highest chroma of reds.
what type of lighting do you use for still lifes
Hi Walt, I use colour corrected fluorescents:

👍👍
your orange lacks the green spot at the top. It is a great lesson, thank you.
OMG I'm a complete failure! Glad you enjoyed it :)
You can in configuration allow the translation of the video? For people who speak in other languages ... Thank you very much!
Hm, I'll have a look into it - I'm not sure how to do that I'm afraid!
Oh let the kitty in. He can help!
In questo tipo di pittura non vengono creati i dettagli della buccia della frutta?
What did you use to neutralize the colours? You said. Not black but a my sell neutral? How do you make the neutral?
I use Munsell neutrals. It's a true neutral mixed from titanium white, ivory black and raw or burnt umber - or a bit of both, depending on your paint brand. You get them by matching Munsell neutral colour chips accurately, which you need to buy.
I have a video on how to mix neutrals using a highly accurate method called bracketing here:

Also an introduction to Munsell here:

Thank you so much for the reply. I really appreciate the care you took to explain. You are a wonder! Thanks!
Perhaps a dumb question , but since you are trying for real colour , how do you adapt to LED lighting , that has low CRI rating?
I only use high CRI lights, I'd never recommend working under a low CRI light. It will make colour matching very difficult!
One of the thinks this lesson has taught me is how little know.
Your funny nice personality😂
:)
I'm still watching the start, but just wanted to say that my cat also sits and knocks at the front door. lol.

No
I'm sorry, but your head covers the objects you're painting, so we can't compare the colors
