    What is a medium:
    It is a polymer emulsion designed to be added to acrylic paint. It is made to alter the characteristics of your paint while protecting it!! They are intermixable and are made to work acrylic paint. They make paint thick or thin, shiny or matt. They add flexibility to your paint effects without impacting it performance. The idea is your paint will not fall off the canvas in a year.
    I mean for you this means All Acrylic mediums are for you. Its up to you to decide how they might help you. Gesso prepares surfaces, gels alter texture and shine, flows and retarders slow drying.
    Medium are not additives. Additives can give you tons of effects BUT you may loose paint adhesions or performance. An additive might be sand you collect and put into your paint. Your paint may fall off the canvas, crack, or do something totally unexpected.
    Mediums will do what it says on the label.
    Mediums include
    Surface prep- gesso
    Surface Preparations are used to seal, prime and add tooth (for color adhesion) to all surfaces such as canvas, wood, paper and metal. This same preparation is used for both acrylic and oil paint. Our professional gessoes usually take just one coat.
    ALL FLUID MEDIUMS-
    Increase Flow. Dry transparent or translucent. Extend the volume of thin paint.
    Make an excellent archival adhesive for collage
    - Fluid- Slo Dri - Palette wetting Spray - Glazes - Airbrush medium
    Gel-
    Add Body add volume , Increase “open” time another words Slow drying
    Dry transparent or translucent so you can create glossy or matt effects
    Extend the volume of paint and that can save you money
    Hold brush or knife marks for perfect impasto
    Make an excellent archival adhesive for collage- Love modge padge but this is the stuff for artists
    Effects -Generally these are the glass beads or sand you see at the store but also are Slow-Dri® Fluid Retarder
    Flow Aid
    Slow-Dri® Gel Retarder
    Thickening Gel
    and varnish- yup that whole wall
    So mediums are all the rest of the paint wall you face in the art store

    I lost my oldest daughter a few weeks ago. We are having some blown glass galaxy jewelry made out of some of her ashes. Hadn't thought about adding them to my paintings, but , now I am. That may sound creepy to some people. But, I know my daughter, she would LOVE me to do this!

      bluesageful I'm so sorry for your loss! I just wanted to say, I'm so impressed with your choice to keep your daughter close by using her ashes in such a beautiful way! I really love this idea, and I've been looking for options for myself, and I liked the idea of having my ashes planted with a tree seed, and growing into a tree! I am SO SO SO grateful to have found your channel!! I started painting a few years ago, been doing it off and on. I have several unfinished projects because I get so frustrated because of my tools and whatnot. I knew that I was using cheaper paints(Basics) but I had no idea about student grade vs pro grade and I had no idea about flick resistance in brushes etc( ALL of my brushes are super soft, I guess I thought they made more sense LOL). I have been watching your tutorials for the past 3 days now and have learned so much!! I went out and bought 5 tubes of Golden based off of what colors I feel I will likely finish one of my projects with and I bought some stiffer brushes. What a difference! I have been wanting to buy Goldens for awhile because a lot of artists I follow use them but I would have no idea about all the mediums, brushes etc without your generous help. And thanks to this video I now know about Golden's free workshops and have found 3 in my area next month. :D Thank you!!!

    Hi Cinnamon! Thank you for continuing to demystify acrylic mediums. When I finally picked up a paint brush after a 40 year "rest" it was the mediums that created the most questions in my mind 😳
    I do have a question - After watching your video on grades of paint, I understand that the biggest difference between pro paint and student paint is the amount of pigment in each. When you "extend" your pro paint with a gel medium, after a certain point have you not just turned your pro paint into a mid or student grade?
    Hope that makes sense. Greetings from your neighbors to the north 😉

    I Love You So Much Cinnamon!!! I have dabbled in painting all my life and really never knew how talented I was and how much people would appreciate my artwork until I started watching you and your mom's channels. I got inspired to start painting again and doing it the informed way. This video really answered so many of my questions about art mediums. I once stood at the medium section for 2 hours just looking and reading all the products and being brought almost to tears because I only became more confused as I read the back panels. Cinnamon, you took the fear and anxiety out of purchasing supplies and putting my brush to canvas:-) I really want to thank you so very much for being such a sweet, sharing and caring artist that you don't hold back information but lovingly spread knowledge and your joy of painting:-) I mean Wow!~I am actually building a private space in my back yard to start painting full time! This would have never happened if I hadn't found you and your mom Ginger on CZcams!! I've said a lot but mean every single word I've typed here...Love you and your mom like family and wish you both all the love, health and wealth you both definitely deserve. Thank you for responding to my post:-) See that right there is what I mean when I say you and your mother are inspiring and caring artists. I tend to be so critical of myself and want everything to be perfect which often stops me from painting all together. Watching the joy you have when painting gives me that little push to let myself go and not be so hard on myself. I'm a retired, disabled single mom and sometimes its difficult to find time for myself. I feel I have less time now then when I was working a full time government job. I've decided after watching several of your videos that I should make time for myself and do what makes me happy. Painting makes me happy and that's what I feel retirement should be "happy!" So, Thanks and keep inspiring me and others through your wonderful videos to enjoy ourselves and have fun with our art:-)

    Myyyyy! I love you soo much!
    And I'm real hard on liking people :) I'm hooked, it took 15 minutes to subscribe just because I was soo closely listening to you. But unlike others I known I'll never unsubscribe here!
    I am a HUGE fan of Golden too. I like how they tests their products (and talk about it on JustPaint) and how we can contact them when we have ANY questions on their products and how to use them. They are the only one I know that tell you what is not the best in a particular product (I mean like with GAC800 they tell you that the product alone has a "blurry" look to it, so they advise you not to use it alone or as a varnish). I don't know other brand that do this : testing, spreading their knowledge, and so.
    Well, anyhow, I really like what you do and how you do it!
    I look forward to watch other vids from you.
    Have a really good day!

    Hi there! I've been looking at all your videos and I think your so amazing! I love how you explain everything and how you take your time painting and teaching.. I want to make sure I'm on the right track when buying my products...I have acrylic paints,gesso, canvas's, an easel and I've bought 3 products to help consistency or flow but I'm still looking a little confused as to how to use them or When to use them.. my acrylic colors tend to dry quick because of the area I live in... as you said before climate can change our paints and paintings. So here are the products I've gotten; and my questions...
    Product #1 Pebeo: studio acrylics/ auxiliaries- GEL brilliant gloss (is this added to the paint to increase thickness or smoothness? And also, can I use water with it or will it get super sticky and hard to clean like oil based products?) Product #2 Windsor &Newton: water mixable oil, painting medium (does this work well with acrylic paints? What exactly can I do with the this?)
    Product #3 Golden: acrylic glazing liquid gloss ( is this the same as product #1? And is there a difference in this and the other gloss ? How do I use it?)

    This is exactly what I need right now. I've been looking at different media trying to work out what to do to find new texture to play with. What I would like to ask is, how essential is gesso on a canvas or paper? Up until now I've just been coating the base with matte medium.

    • @kaileybender4296
      @kaileybender4296 Před 8 lety

      Matte medium is just as good. You're creating a non-porous surface to paint on either way, the only real difference is that the gesso is opaque and matte medium is transparent.

    Thank you for the quest today!! Is there a a medium that will make my acrylic paintings have the look that plein aire oil artists seem to get in their landscapes? I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense....There just seems to be a certain look to it that I don't see in my acrylic paintings... is it just the color palette, is it the texture of the paint? I wish I could be more specific....Also, what is the shelf life for my golden heavy body paint? Will it last more than a year in the tube? :) Thank you for everything!!! I'm really learning a lot from you!!

    i am into the fluid paintings but i am having a hard time figuring out what will make it dry with the same look as it is wet. i have had gorgeous flow paintings that when they dried looked dull and and cracked. i get the cracked is probably because of too much water but how can i get it to dry but maintain that same wet look. New artist and my favorite is flow paintings but lost on what to do. Thanks for any advice.

    Your skin looks so dewy and beautiful!!! I have a question... I have been painting a lot of pop art and so the paintings have very clean lines and bright bold color. So not much layering or blending. I usually just use water when I paint, but I think it is breaking down the pigment and I find myself doing 3-4 layers of (Golden and Liquitex) paint which takes hours! If I used the gloss fluid, would that help it flow without breaking down the pigment?

    • @TheArtSherpa
      @TheArtSherpa  Před 8 lety

      +Amanda Cypert For POP are I would switch to a soft body paint. There is a Fluid medium you can use until you make the switch Fluid Mediums perform much in the way that their name implies, they are fluid in nature and reduce viscosity of heavier paints and gels. They tend to self-level and do not retain brushstrokes. Liquitex Fluid Mediums modify acrylic paints in a variety of ways and contain acrylic resins to maintain or enhance adhesion and durability. Hope that helps

    Thanks for the video. I need to ask a question as im always trying to find a cheaper way to paint. And there are no videos on youtube about it. Making your own oil paints at home is the paint quality just as good, as lets say the michael harding brand?

      @TheArtSherpa  Před 6 lety

      I am not sure how to make an oil paint... But I think you may be able something on youtube. Personally, I haven't come across any tutorials. And honestly, making paint doesn't sound like a cheaper option considering all the chemistry and equipment that needs to be involved in the process. 💜💙💗
