- Although trends might seem completely random, there are well-documented patterns to what becomes popular. A 20th century industrial designer, who created some of America’s most iconic looks, developed a theory of coolness that has been backed up by various scientific studies. Derek Thompson, senior editor at The Atlantic, explains the science behind why we like what we like.

Raymond Loewy was an industrial DESIGNER, not engineer. There a "slight" difference between the two...
Loewy balanced novelty and familiarity in his works; humans love that mix of both. Brilliant!
Hey Derek, just thought I'd tell you that your presentation was spot on. Good job man. Looking forward to some more videos.
This was really informative. I heard Derek talk about the MAYA concept on Bloomberg's Gameplan podcast and applying the slowly exposure effect at work in meetings!
Nice job, I like that yall have so far stuck with more "obscure" topics. Keep it up. Also, bring back James Hamblin.
Great content, keep it up!
Pip Boy right on brand here
Good stuff, love these design focused talks, thank you for making it.
Awesome video! Excited for the series :)
This series is fantastic. Really great content.
I love this channel and especially this video! It makes you view the world in a different way, which is what I look for. I'm amazed this channel doesn't have more subscribers!
Thanks!
your content matches your title " COOL". love it.
So good! There's a MAYA dose of psychology in the video itself lol. Bring on the rest of the series.
Thank you Derek, your parsing is awesome and made it easy for me to understand Raymond's MAYA stage.
Wow, haven't seen Derek since the old "Economics in Plain English" videos. Glad to see he's still around!
Hi, again!
Great vid - look forward to more of them :-D
this is a pretty cool series thank you!
Longtime Loewy fan here.... Very insightful video. Thanks!
MY god!!! I think im going to enjoy very much this channel! glad I subcribe
I love this series!
Great work!
This was extremely interesting. So glad I subscribed! Also, you have great camera presence and seem like a genuinely good person. Can't wait for the next episode!
oh and to give you some insight, I didn't click on this video right away because the thumbnail didn't grab my attention. You guys should put a photo of that cool train or something.
*that smile*
Arthur Dent you gay...
In music too! you like the stuff you listened to already, or that is familiar, and you slowly but surely find yourself in different genres. As we get older, we get stuck in the same familiarity and that can stop us from exploring different options... etc.
Just read Derek's book - Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity in an Age of Distraction. Surprised there was no mention of it, as this video gives a pretty good overview of some of the key ideas. Worth a read if you're interested in diving a bit deeper!
Well done!
Was this also a TED talk? I recall bits of it.
Great video... just wished it was a little longer.
I miss Body Talks so much.
What is Body Talks?
Going out to get his new book today!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s why the same song keeps playing in “shuffle” mode!?!
Awesome
This is brilliant. Vsauce without that obnoxious self-engrossed character, but with a sincerely open one. I'm in.
Good introduction but now I want more
So the ''golden radio'' makes things cool, people say it is all around us (in nature) so it is familiar to all of us. I thought about that and I think it is true, too bad not a lot of people know about it and it isn't thought in schools, universityes that study marketing (except in art, I never lerned about it, and never in a way the internet teaches you to think about it) It's a great thing to know, makes you a bit more aware of why people like some things and why you yourselve like certain things. I recommend to watch a few videos about the golden ratio, and mabey even read about it.
love it
Raymond Lowey was an INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER a professional career in its own right, very different from an Engineer!
Imagine going to work again and again and again thas familiar
Interesting
This video isn't about what's cool and what is not, it is a bit about why people accept design.
I find old warplanes cool. Don’t know why but I do
Raymond Loewy was and Industrial Designer not an Industrial Engineer. There is a significant difference between the two disciplines. Gregg Montgomery - Industrial Designer
I always find it anoying that the discover weekly playlists contains songs I already heard.
nice vid
Fucking genius, a window in the space station, who could've come up with that?
I wonder if he extend to wish you demand familiarity determines how liberal or conservative you are?
Yes, but I think it's more progressive vs conservative.
He ate burger just before recording this
Good meta job, inform us on the old with a refreshing take (new information). Mostly, inform. Thank you.
Also, he's a great personality for it. I hope you'll have others as well to keep it fresh, but he's a good choice.
Also, when informing, I dare you to keep it out of the politically charged topics. We need informing on those too, but it will make the rest of your work neutral and trust worthy to the rest of your potential audience.
That's why retros goes with urban outfits
This guy reminds me of Bob Benson from Mad Men.
It's awesome content. Thx and subscribe)
Ed who? What song?
Ed Sheeran - Shape of You
*(:D)*
who is the coolest person ever?
MAYA in Sankrit means illusion
This doesn't tell us what is cool. Something is cool regardless of relation to your current understandings of things. An old car seen for the first time will seem cool all on its own. A cool haircut or clothing will seem as such because of what it is, not because it is familiar and different.
shit that was good
Then what makes sharks cool?
Having your button to the top definitely isn’t cool
Raymond Loewy just copied from the german design shool "Bauhaus"....
Least expecting
Humm , so do we nowadays try less to make things look cool , and instead go for more efficient designs ?
maya
Here from 11th grade English what’s up fellow students
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER?? wth he was a designer!! INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER ..... not even close.... nice video though
This is a big part of my theory of what makes music good, but it applies to all kinds of things. Weird for the sake of weird is irrational, but familiar for the sake of familiar is boring. Try to do something different but don't make it obvious that you're trying.
я не знаю почему тут дизлайк стоит сам разбирайся
Omg you're so cute :P
This guy is pretending that his resting face is a smile and it's creepy as hell.
doesnt explain coolness at all
