    With Sco, nothing you can say is enough.
    The band is stratospheric and together...
    There weren't many Sco albums in Europe, when I went to the USA all I did was look for and buy everything I could find.

      Right. Only the slightest difference between the Fender here and the Ibanez on the original....and that difference isn't even the instrument... it's effects and settings. Sco is one of the all time greats.

But those funky drums and insanely sold grooves of Dennis' are something else. He plays poly-rhythms like other drummers play straight time. It's so natural sounding, like 7 over 4 is just the most obvious thing in the world. I wish it was for me. lols

    Sorry, but the P-bass tone just doesn't cut it on this song. Gary Grainger and Dennis playing this together will never be outdone. Gary and Dennis playing grooves like this together was the reason I started playing bass when I was ~14. During the summer, I would go to Takoma Station in D.C., stand outside by the side door which would be open during the hot summer, and listen to them groove together from about 6 feet away from them. I'll never forget the two men that inspired me and changed the course of my life when I was just a kid.

    The hired gun with the Strat is really good at complimenting Scofield and letting him shine. At least I assume he's a hired gun since he's not named in the description. His name is Avi Bortnick by the way.

    • @zenobardot
      @zenobardot Před 3 lety

      Well, almost all of Sco's backing musicians have been hired guns, save perhaps Joe Lovano who was/is a marquee name himself, but Bortnick was a founding member of the 2001-2003 era "John Scofield Band" and appeared on the Uberjam and Up All Night records, and came back for the reunion of that band in 2013. So it's not a fleeting relationship, exactly, by the standards of Sco's working bands.

    • @zenobardot
      @zenobardot Před 3 lety

      I think they overlapped briefly in Miles' band around 1985? They were born 10 days apart, and Robben hit the national scene a few years ahead of John. John started becoming a "guitarist's guitarist" around 1977, and Robben probably got some exposure to John at some point in the late 1970s. John was almost certainly aware of Robben's work with the L.A. Express and others in the 1970s when John was just starting out with Billy Cobham.

      @@zoso2809 Why not? Out of a decent guitar in its core (which doesn't have to be expensive at all) a good luthier or a guitar tech can make you a stage-ready instrument that can withstand hours of playing even under the stage lights. We get carried away sometimes with expensive equipment thinking it is the only way to go... And of course, it is very who plays the instrument and how well he/she knows it. There are no perfect instruments. You need to get to know your instrument.

Chris Kroenlein (who is K-Line) makes vintage-sounding pickups, though early on I think he was using 3-rd party pickups like Lollars. Long story short, it's possible Sco is using K-Line pickups here, but some super-fan may know more.

      totally agree. Dennis does what he can but that bassplayer is just not as groovy as Gary. This shows what a HUGE impact Gary had on the band back then

    Seeing John Scofield, if you didn't know anything about him, I think one might think he's a country musician with his Tele and ballcap. He can dress how he wants but an accomplished jazz musician can get away with a fedora or something. Or if that's too garish, a nice tweed suit.

      @zenobardot Před 3 lety +1

      I was just watching a 1987 Sco live video on youtube where he's in a kind of ill-fitting linen suit. It wasn't doing much for him. Dressing down suits his greasy jazz just fine.

      I guess you haven't heard the Uberjam band? Sco made 3 records with this band (not using Chambers), and Avi plays rhythm guitar and laptop stuff on all of them. It's one of his more popular groups actually.
