music usage on osu! has a reputation as bad as london's weather (damp and terrible). in this video, pishifat and mangomizer talk about how we've been improving the situation by working with artists to create original songs specifically for osu!'s world cups, and the struggles involved behind the scenes throughout the last few years.

(ed: though a little embarrassed about the feedback on disjoint sections when both songs very much fell in that category... oops!)
bonus fact: of Ambrosia starts with an "O" because both ΩΩPARTS (kind of) and One One did, and I thought it'd be cute to keep up the pattern
this is also why there's a lick in the jazz-type section, b/c both those songs threw one in at different points

We actually talked about this (the "O" thing) on the day but it got cut out... (I thought it was interesting and funny enough to mention at least).
There's over 6 hours of unused footage, who knows what else we might've talked about 🤔
That video was not only extremely well edited but also offered an really important insight (and information) about organizing owc, featured artists, and more...
I dont know how many people knew about how complex and big those years were for owc at this point, but me personally I had absolutely no clue.

Extra notes:
- BREACH PROTOCOL by Kurorak is technically the first song release on World cups, Daikyi (the mapper) proposed us to use this song for MWC4k2019 and we accepted because it was a really nice touch to have something fully unreleased by the time. This was done way before the current osu!originals workflow and originally not intended to be used on osu as it was originally composed for one of the many ITG mod sightreading tournaments, check OISRT and NotITG to get an idea of this.
- M1LLION PP (current name) already was called OOPARTS during song production, but after both rejections, this new song for OWC2020 took the name over.
- Edit: oh yeah, one more thing, about OOPARTS while we asked only for the song, Camellia did reach a personal designer to create the background + jacket used on that track (and wouldnt be surprised if it was the same for Parallel Universe Shifter)

yeah i dont even think the fact that it was an original/debuting song was considered at the time. daikyi or someone commissioned kurorak and they just happened to have the song lying around in their computer. kurorak only uploaded it late in 2022, 3 years after it was in mwc

The anonymous artist for the taiko tiebreaker really went by "Johnson Solid" 💀
if you don't understand "johnson" is another word for "pp" (not performance points) and solid is another word for hard, so his name is basically "peepee hard"

I am extremely surprised that Duplicity Shade was considered a bit of a fail. That song & map have become one of the peaks in mania 7k history, for more than one reason, everyone that plays mania knows about it. I guess it kinda is about the map and not just the song, but the 2 go together in the end. Not the same can be said about Kyuukou, which did eventually get a banger storyboard & background, which I think was made as a bilibili video, they contacted the creator and added it in the actual map.
Fun fact: we are now at 2 SR reworks made specifically to nerf Duplicity Shade. It is still the most farm map in the game.

Frums is so good. I first discovered their music through Aspire 2021 with XNOR XNOR XNOR and it immediately became one of my favorite songs of all time.
@@brettzolstick989 Same here, though I feel as if fanzhen0019 needed to make his map to prove the potential of Frums in osu! mapping. Regardless, all Frums' maps are highlight independent of it.

Maybe I'm just dumb emotional but towards then end when hearing all the songs and then vanitas, and hearing that very last "that's our thing", that made me drop a tear or two. I'm so happy about what this has become, I've been here half of my lifetime and this really is emotional for me to see osu! grow so much. Thanks for everyone making it possible

@@venb Not even close lol geometry dash is just a platforming game with background music, the charts aren't rhythm based most of the time while ctb is timed and mapped on the songs. Just open the editor once and you'll understand the difference idk.

I hope you guys do more of these types of videos because this was amazing, even though it didn't have too much fancy editing it held lots of important information and magnomizer presented them nicely. Fantastic video.
This is my favourite video on the channel. It's really cool to see an insight of how the workings of commissioning an artist goes in terms of rhythm games. Also, the moment I saw how restrictive the initial requirements were for the songs I knew it wouldn't be good. When you restrict the flexibility of what artists create, they won't be able to compose something that flows well and has a sort of personality for lack of better words.
As an osu tournament fanatic, this was absolutely interesting to watch. Would love to see more content like this, especially regarding general improvements and changes in production & QoL stuff since 2013-2015 up to now. osu!'s official tournaments are some of the most fun to watch, especially with the cohesive wikis, sheets and VODs. This was one of the most pleasant videos I've seen in a while. The vibe was great and you two did an amazing job at explaining things in enough detail so we can follow, but without just rambling on forever. I had watched OWC 2023 and some other WC games before, never really realizing how much effort has gone into the songs alone.

Its great that you guys are laying down a great foundation for this game. Osu really is timeless in my mind, akin to counter strike. The base game will never change not matter what happens, and its simply a testament to its quality. I hope you guys keep at it and make more decisions for the future, like making the game much more modular in Lazer, and more original songs that can give osu a legacy. Thanks for the hard work! this is a really cool video! it's so easy for "rhythm game boss songs" to end up as messes musically; even the arcade rhythm games have tons of issues with that, and their songs are half as long and usually only done by one person
Alright so for that Camellia's BPM incident, I just want to say that don't try to having a look at the music sheet, on top of the BPM changes, Camellia yeeets a bunch of notes and make the sheet dense af.

I always kinda hated like peppy said the weird structure of the first tiebreakers, it just felt like it had no soul to me. It's good to see peppy actually stepped up and made good changes because Vanitas was for sure a giant step forward in terms of quality and also replayability as an actual song outside of the game.
