I always loved this song. I was 12 yrs old when it came out and loved it then. Seventeen years later I went to Marrakesh in Morocco as a young woman in my 20's....and I knew I was there because of this song
The same thing happened to me Susan. I knew I wouldn't rest until I rode on the Marrakesh Express. I remember palm trees and the Casablanca train station having an exotic feel to it as I waited to board the train. The song went round and round in my head as I watched the Morocco countryside go by. It was years ago but it was for me a "forever young" event in my life.....If I could I would go back in time and take that ride again.
Ah! Who wouldn't want to take a ride on the Marrakech Express. All aboard..! Such happy music with wonderful harmonies. Thank you Crosby, Still and Nash.
Yes, Marrakech, my sunny city throughout the year, its temperature reaches fifty degrees in the summer and in the winter there is rain and snowfall over the majestic Atlas Mountains, which are more than four thousand meters high. Ten centuries ago. When you walk around the old city in Marrakesh, you feel that you are in the past, and you go back 1000 years ago. You feel the history, especially since the walls of the city are made of dirt, stone, wood, and the doors of oud. I love you, Marrakech.
I went on holiday to Camp Africa in Morocco just to see if lived up to this song, Yes it did. I bought two Jelabas and saw Cobra charmers in the square, These were wonderful times with wonderful sounds.
@@johnf9482 yes Stay at home :) but you re more than welcome on july after the lockdown. The best period is between April and June and between spetembre and november given the temperatures in summer in Marrakech (we write it with CH )
I did that trip to marrakech same time as Graham . I can see how he wrote that song , what a trip . we went further over what was spanish sahara . now back in moroccan hands due to the green march
My buddies and I used to spend a day together at the Canadian National Exhibition in our youth. I'll always remember we all bought tickets for the 'Polar Express', one of the rides. While the ride went this way and that, faster and faster, Marrakech Express came on the loudspeaker (seems like all of the rides had music for atmosphere) I looked at my brother in the next car and he had a huge smile happening which was odd because he didn't really get too into midway rides. We all had a ball that 1st go-round. A couple of hours later we went on it again, and the song they played was Mama Cass's "Better Every Day". Good times.
I was 15 when I first heard this song in 1969 on WRKO radio Boston. I had been playing guitar for 5 years at this time. Before I even heard the entire song I was thinking if these guys can write more stuff like this they are going to be really BIG.
I remember fondly taking the Marrakesh Express from Casablanca back in 2011. Not as cool as perhaps back in the 60s or 70s, but still brings a smile. 👍😎

It's generally ignored, but Stills' guitar arrangement on this piece is perfect for Nash's concept. He must have had some kind of super-muse on his shoulder during the recording of this album because he nailed every cut. Different styles on each track, but inspired in every case. Hats off to SS ... what the heck ... hair off, too. And undergarments.
I've heard critics complaining that CSN's first album was too saccharine. Are you kidding me???!!! Yes, there was a sweetness to their music, but it went way deeper than sugar. Apparently music critics need to grow up and feel the music.
This reminds me of 2017 when on holiday on the Isle of Wight when myself and my friend Becky were singing and dancing to it walking up to the hotel after a few, whilst my wife and her husband Scott were lagging behind! Lol. Great friends of ours. We get to see them every time we visit.
I was pretty young in the 60's though I definitely started forming some pretty strong directions of what I liked and I didn't always know who anyone was I just liked it and I remember this being on a 45 I had and on the B side had "Helplessly Hoping". Little mono record player that I decided to connect to some speakers that were a little bit larger. But as plastic and cheap as it was I wouldn't mind having that still. used to use the top cover to let the seeds roll out of the shake and roll some decent joints. Glad I was able to catch the backside of this era and though I missed a lot I also saw a lot of things and heard them at a pretty young age which by today's standards means very little. lol
In 1969 I put together a crystal radio from the Shack and went to our sink to see what I could pick up with it. No battery of course. She was working on ground waves and I had earphones. Man , CSN was coming in over that crystal radio no matter where the coil positioner was touching. It was a rainy day in Portsmouth, NH at the AFB and WRKO Boston was coming in 50,000 watts strong. The first time I ever heard “Marrakech Express” LOUD by its own power from ground waves.
Roy Richardson Funny story.....This song (which is great of course) is not particularly popular in Marrakech. The one song that I heard rather frequently was “Welcome to the Hotel California”. 😖 But I love Morocco!!!
Used to think , and sing riding on the American Express.. and think of the grey hound and root 66 .. .. America,, Morocco,, I just love love love this song It Jst makes you wanna dance “lol

Wikipedia lists Stephen Stills on vocals, guitar, organ, piano, and bass; David Crosby on vocals; Graham Nash on vocals and acoustic guitar; and Jim Gordon on drums. It’s clear Stills is playing an organ (probably a Hammond) throughout. On first listen, I thought I heard electric piano but on closer listen I think it is a piano (perhaps with some echo or reverb). The “keening” electronic-sounding keyboard (mentioned by Engstfeld) is probably either a Mellotron or an early monophonic synthesizer.
Stephen Stills' arrangement makes this happen. Elsewhere on CZcams, someone has skillfully synchronized Graham's solo demo with The Hollies' backing track. Graham was correct to take this song to California and record it with David and Stephen. The Hollies(as much as I was and am a fan) could no longer do justice to Graham's music.
I always thought this was a Graham Nash song that the Hollies never got to. Turns out it was, was under discussion for their early 80's reunion album, but not included. Too bad.
I'm 100% sure they got the inspiration for this song while riding that train. In Morocco contrary to other third world countries train is an upper classes transportation it's very regulated, clean, safe & more expensive than lower classes transportation like bus and taxi. So most likely beatles used train to travel while they were Morocco
apparently this song is based on his actual experience in marrakech in 1966 can anyone tell me if there were actually pigs anywhere publicly in marrakech back then?
Burt472 Don’t believe a word of it, go see it for yourself. It is relatively inexpensive, the food is great and the heat (up to 109) is tolerable! And while you are at it jump on a train to the Rif Mountains and visit Chefchouen. This city, in northwest Morocco is all blue. Seriously, it’s like Smurf Villiage. Everything is this lovely blue color. It is a sight you would never forget. Also you can rent a Porsche and sail through the Atlas Mountains....Enjoy!!!
I’m in Marrakech listening to this. The Berber people I’ve met are so hospitable and have all the time in the world for you. Happy days.
