- In this video, champion flatpicker Allen Shadd demonstrates his approach to learning to play a song by ear, using Blue Highway's song "Horseshoe Bend" written by Tim Stafford.
By breaking the phrases down into small blocks, developing fluency and speed with each before moving on to the next, then putting the pieces together to form the whole, Allen makes the case for how this method is great for training not only the fingers and hands, but the ear as well.
Divide and conquer, use your ears, and ... have a great time!

I use a Blue Chip TD45.

Hi Allen - excellent lesson and video - thanks. I understand learning by ear is the way to go and I typically have better success with that approach, but as an older player - I mean really old - I have a problem with retention so at this point what I'm doing now is learning a section by ear and then tabbing it - I do this till i have learned the whole piece by ear and have written it down - I've had to dot his cause if I don't write it down, the next day I don't remember any of it and have to start all over - it's as if I've never heard the tune before - but now with the tab I can use it as needed as I listen and play along till it sticks. Hope this is helpful to other old players- again thanks.

These guitars are so gorgeous and sound so great..but the money? man oh man..thousands..its like a cheap model nowadays is 3K.. just saying. Great lesson!
Very helpful!! Nice playing and lovely guitar. Always curious about what strings are being used.
This guitar was strung for the first time just several days before, placed on a ToneRite for the weekend, set up tweaked and strings replaced a few days before we recorded this. The strings used are D'Addario EJ17's, pretty much what Ken strings everything up with.
