Unnesecessarily Long Review of Shihan PWC Watercolors

  • This is a long one, timestamps are below!
Today we are reviewing the Shinham PWC (these are the top-of-the-line watercolor paints from Shinhan, not to be confused with the professional line that is really a high-end student quality paint) You can find them here:
32 color set on amazon: amzn.to/3If3uLn
24 color set on Amazon: amzn.to/3T7l6MA
12 pastel tint set on Amazon: amzn.to/3AvyS3p
Sets and single tubes on Blick: shrsl.com/3o0it
TLDR: I love these and they are a fantastic bargain!
The palettes I used cn be found here: www.etsy.com/shop/Shawns3DPrints
    Pros (of the 32 set)
    Price/value
    High pigment load
    Very transparent
    Glazes well
    Easy to work with
    Clean color that mixes well
I am grateful that the 32 set I reviewed does not contain black or white
Comes with a really informative brochure about the paint range
    Cons: (of the 32 set)
Color selection: there are two similar PB15 blues and 2 similar pthalo-based greens.
Fugitive colors: 2 reds that contain PR83 (fugitive color) as well as Opera, also the PG8 sap green that is beautiful may be fugitive. I'm not sure all of the pigment documentation is correct tho as a few colors do not look like the assigned pigments to my eye.
    Bottom line:
I like this paint. Even with the caveats, I think they are worth the money.
    Timestamps:

    9:40 Setting up a palette
    30:03 Swatching
    1:05:49 Glaze and lift results
1:07:20 Comparison of PWC and "professional" range

I never can resist the unnecessarily (goodness that's hard to spell)... long reviews.. they are my favorites..!!! Will never miss them.. I have watched your really long "all of my watercolor palettes" video several times.. some of us prefer this over anything that mainstream media is trying to fill our minds with.. lol

  • @sonyaoart
    @sonyaoart Před rokem +16

I love an unnecessarily long review myself. For the price, I think you can’t even complain too much about the lightfastness of some of these colours. They would make great sketchbook paints, and then you still have a good number of lightfast colours. From what I’ve seen, I like these better than the Mijello pure pigment set because there’s a bit of granulation here. Thanks for the review and I’m glad you’re thrilled with them!

I still have my old college set of PWC Shin Hans. I used them for my watercolor course and I understand why my professor really pushed for us to use them since they're professional quality and really taught us how to use the medium. I take them out every once and a while, and I've made really good watercolor galaxy paintings. The ones I've hung in my bedroom haven't faded yet (since they're not in direct sunlight), but I can attest to how nice and rich the colors are even two years later!
I'm glad you enjoyed them Lindsay!

Such a great review! I LOVE these longer review videos! Side note: as far as I know, in regards to the years of pigment research Ive fawned over-PO13, PG8, PR83, PB66, PY1 and PO16 should be avoided in professional paintings to be sold. My opinion is (not that anyone asked lol) I think this set is fun and I really love their version of PG8- I just think one should probably do lightfast testing on all the colors before selling artworks made with this set-since there is several discrepancies in their pigment and lightfast info. Anyway such a great video Lindsay, you make the best review videos- I absolutely love watching you swatch out all the colors and listen to you talk about each pigment! Thank you so much for sharing and much love ❤️

Yay; an exciting vid with swatching and pretty colors! I’m at the palette section as I write this and the uncommon pigments make me excited or wary depending on their lightfastness, so I’d probably buy a few open stock tubes rather than this set, but I’ve seen other painters have a color here and there very happily.

In Japan (and I think China as well), there is a custom to steam and sweeten peaches and they usually turn that pink hue.
In addition, while most people in Japan would say “pinku” for pink, old Japanese would call it “momoiro” (momo being the name for the peach fruit, iro meaning color).

Edit..... just looked and I paid £40.00 5 years ago.I'm grateful watercolours don't expire 😄

I really want that Brown Red color! So pretty! I also love those little palettes for the Altoids tins! I paused the video as soon as I saw them and ran to Etsy to find them! 😂 You should totally do an unboxing for them! They’re very nice and clever. Now I’m thinking about getting some for my myriad of tins! I have a few go-to palettes that I like taking when I have to leave home, which is basically all the time since I’m a pet-sitter/house-sitter. I’m always staying at other houses for my work, so it’s nice to be able to take a small set with me !

Played around with a few tubes of PWC I got open stock. They're really nice. It seems many Asian watercolors (Camlin and Shinhan) lift easily on wood pulp papers. I wouldn't recommend pairing them with non-cotton wc paper, unless you found one that really sucks in the paint. Many reviewers said they are more opaque, but I got transparent colors so there's no opacity issues. Most important to me, it layers really well! Shinhan has gentle flow, the more water you add to the paint the more it flows. Paper can also affect wet-on-wet techniques as well. Vibrant affordable high quality paints! I tried drying them in pans, it's been 2 weeks and it's still sticky, but I'm sure it depends your environment's humidity levels.

/swatch the set until the" great 4th of July dishwasher flood". I believe I paid $81 for the SWC on Amazon. There are two colors that my SWC has/doesn't versus the PWC. I don't have Quinacridone Red and Pyroll Red. I have Permanent Red and Permanent Rose. Getting ready to use my brand new Lindsay brushes on a new painting with my SWC set! I’ve been waiting for a review from you on these! As a hobbyist, I’d rather not spend a lot for colors that are normally heftier in price from other brands (shadow colors for example). I love the quality you get and the good array of non-fugitive shades. I do have some cadmiums from a set that I’ve been too anxious to use, because I don’t know if I’m disposing of them properly. I try to wipe most of the paint off on a paper towel before lightly dipping in water to wipe more off. I’ve also tried letting the pigments sink in my water (like with acrylics) before pouring out the rest, but I don’t know how effective that is. I have septic, so I worry about that + the environment. If anyone has recommendations I’m open to it!

Hullo Lindsay, Nice review I believe I would stick with the Mijello Mission Gold paints over these if I wanted an eastern paint recipe. I think the Gansai Japanese paints are even more different? Is that the correct way to express this idea? As for Western paints I have mentioned my preference for DaVinci over more than any other brand! I still have several brands in my studio palette but DaVinci has all but overrun the paints selected there! I avoid Schmincke and Senneiler because the price point makes them "to precious" and I seldom use them.
Now I realize this is your job and your paintings as more of a side effect of your CZcams job. I still believe you could easily sell your paintings, have you looked into daily paint works? I have seen several people that I follow sell their finished paintings there for some added income. Marla Baggetta is the first to come to mind. She sells pastel paintings and they seem to do quite well and with minimal additional investment on her part. Just an idea,I hope your doing well and staying positive. Have a lovely day!

That BR1 opera is Basic Red 1, it is a dye. What an interesting mix of lightfast and non-lightfast colors in this range. Some of their pigment info looks questionable, but if you’re just painting in a sketchbook, who cares? It’s nice to see another source for PBr25, I LOVE that color, Mission Gold puts it in their pan set and I use it for every thing. I’ll put a few of these in my Jackson’s wishlist. I think they have occasional sales on ShinHan.
On another note, I just finished a full 9x 12 painting using the LW #8 round brush for about 60% of the painting. It was fantastic, it has taken top spot as my favorite round - holds and dispenses the pigment beautifully. And the rigger is PERFECT. Just right. I have soooo many riggers, none of them quite right. Haven’t put the rest to work in depth, although have done a couple of practice pages. The cat’s tongue is really nice, lays down color without dumping. Very happy!

    Hi, Lindsay,
Just a quick observation. Your ShinHan review of about five years ago clearly stated that the PWC line was NOT professional. I did get the set, and I can confirm - not professional, and not really beginner either because it is not a mixing set (no real burnt sienna, weird yellows, etc. Luckily I already had an SWC burnt sienna PBr7 and a ShinHan no-name PR101 + PO20). So I would say the PWC set was for someone more advanced than a beginner but who doesn't like to mix colors. Incredible that anyone wouldn't want to mix colors! Loved that it has absolutely no drying shift - but what do they put in it to get that attribute?
Now apparently PWC = SWC. The "New" PWC still doesn't seem to be a mixing set - no nice clear greens or purples in your color wheels, but I guess, again, no need to mix.
Matthew Anderson of Anderson Studio also did a review several years ago stating that PWC was clearly student grade and that he had given his set to his children and was using only SWC, which he gave very high marks. He has a more recent review in which he says PWC = SWC. What gives?
My take on it is that ShinHan is deliberately trying to confuse us and we should have nothing to do with them.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 5 měsíci

Their professional range is not professional quality in my opinion, but the PWC and SWC lines are, they are the same paint, but SWC is marketed in Korea, and PWC is marketed in the USA and EUROPE If I said the PWC line was not professional, I misspoke because it is, and it is lovely:)

The Asian companies love the PR83, don't they? Remember, you cannot trust the lightfastness companies list! Holbein for instance says their Alizarin colors are as lightfast as others they make, when that is obviously not true. Always do your own research on the pigment using Handprint and Art of Pigment Databse, and your common sense. Best to do one's own testing too of course.
