BMW E36 How to diagnose fuel issue

  • BMW E36 fuel systems are typically very reliable, however overtime it does need maintenance and repair. This video describes how to diagnose a non starting bmw fuel problem. The problem with this vehicle in particular was the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump.
    Typically with fuel issues you want to start by checking the fuse box, and then move on to testing the pump.
    Fuel pumps can go out prematurely typically for three reasons: Dirty gasoline, letting the car run until the pump has to circulate the fuel at the bottom of the tank, and neglecting to add fuel treatment from time to time in the tank.
    Diagnosis is not very difficult, and luckily fuel pump replacement is a relatively easy task on bmw e36s.

      95 is obd1 put wire back together make sure check engine light turns on IF NOT IT COULD BE THE FUSEABLE LINK; PUT in the RUN POSITION TO SEE IF CHECK ENGINE COMES ON ,IF NOT THEN LOOK FOR THE FUSEABLE LINK FOR THE DME .COULD BE IN THE TRUNK ON PASSENGER SIDE UNDER INSULATION .OR UNDER PASSENGER SIDE SEAT OR UNDER THE PASSENGER PILLAR TO PASSENGER DOOR. YOU A DMM TO SEE IF DME IS GETTING POWER ANYWAY TO CHECK WIRES.HAD THIS PRBLEM WHEN I SWAPPED MY 318 TO 325.ENDED UP BEING THE DME BEING BURNT OUT AND THE FUSEABLE LINK .HOPE THIS HELPS.BEFORE ALL THIS CHECK FUSES AND DME AND FUEL PUMP RELAY

    start with a fuel filter on any car. Then test fuel pressure as per specs, to test use a loaner tool checked out at most parts stores, if fuel pressure but leaks down then fuel pressure regulator may be cause, if no fuel pressure then yes, check the electrical fuse and relay.
    5 pin relay is not correct, it turns stuff from hi- to low. not off.
    4 pin relay turns stuff on or off.
    if you have new fuel filter, test and have pressure then test fuel injectors either on or off car. clogged fuel injectors will cause misfire or non-start

    • @e36fanatics29
      @e36fanatics29  Před 6 lety

      Dyno tuning/performance chips give you pretty good bang for the buck, normally I'd recommend an upgraded radiator, but on a four cylinder you don't need it. Cold air intake, upgraded fuel injectors, bilstein suspension.
      You can really get into performance stuff, but it gets extremely expensive. I would just start with a cold air intake and a tuner.

      William J. Bendell for my car, i have alot of fuel lines including the fuel filter, diverter valve and fuel pressure regulator directly under the drivers side side skirt. These components are covered by a think metal cover, and the cover is held on by 4 8mm bolts. You should check those lines, the clamps, and possible a fuel leak. There is also a vacuum hose attached to the nipple on the fuel pressure regulator. If that hose is damaged it could be your problem.

    @e36 Fanatics I own a 93' 318is E36, i'm stuck.. i am having a similar issue where i can crank the car but it will not start up. I just replaced all of the vacuum hoses, hoses that connect from the intake to the ICV, air boot, new o2 sensor, new spark plugs, cam shaft position sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, and my fuel pump is not the original apparently it was replaced a month before i got the car back in July. When i try to start the car i can smell fuel that leads me to believe that the fuel pump is working.
    I bought a Peake Research OBD1 code reader and when i plugged it into my car i got a code that reads E-10, apparently that means that the car does not recognize the code reader.
    I am not getting spark from the spark plugs, i pulled one of the new ones and put the ignition coil sleeve over the plug and tried cranking it while i had a buddy rest the plug on the engine block to see if it had spark but no luck. The coil packs seemed to have been replaced on that car pretty recently as they are aftermarket and in fairly new condition, the only other thing i could think of is maybe i have a bad DME. Im so fucking frustrated right now im out of ideas on how to get it to run. Any ideas?
    Thanks btw love the channel and all of the helpful tips and tricks!

      E36 Fanatics Currently the muffler this off so it’s coming out from underneath the car but I’ve looked and haven’t seen any smoke. The only time I did was when i changed my spark plugs there was oil on them and on the coil packs and the smoke went anyway after 5 minutes of it being turned on

      @Cobra_527 Před 6 lety

      E36 Fanatics yeah a friend of mine did the obd1 method and said he didn’t remember the code it was either a o2 sensor or a vacuum leak but he was leaning towards o2 sensor. I never really worried about it cause this was months ago and this problem just started

    • @e36fanatics29
      @e36fanatics29  Před 6 lety

      That's just your valve cover gasket no big deal, if you have that bad of a fuel/air mix either your 02's have gone really bad (normally throw codes) or your fuel pressure regulator. Humor yourself and check the air filter anyways, if the air filter is EXTREMELY clogged it can cause a bad mix.
