    Thanks!! I have an E36 318iS which is coughing and spluttering - I suspect water in the fuel but this video has given me some excellent info on how to access the fuel system and some ideas on how to check it.

    Nevertheless on my 1998 e36 323 the fuel relay is not Nr1.
    1. Auxiliary Pump
    2. Fuel relay
    3. Main ECU relay.

    just dont put the main relay in place of the fuel relay lol just did it and next thing we know the wires on engine harness was smoking. pulled it all apart and it was the 87a middle wire on the fuel pump relay. rewired it.. and now for some weird reason my gas gauge doesnt move and sets on E

    TYVM this might have helped me find the problem with fuel leaking (top & bottom) from my new fuel pump as well as below new fuel filter. I will have to look to check new one to see if the feed line has ridges or not before I install the new fuel pressure regulator. I am so lost I so miss my 318i & am sick of the bus.

    Very helpful. I am currently having a crank, but no start on my 98 E36 M3. Planning on switching the fuel relay and main relay test next .
    I have replaced brand new (VDO) crank position sensor, but Engine continues to throw code P0335, which says ECU is not getting signal from crank position sensor. I suspect no ground signal from ECU to fuel relay as you pointed out. Any suggestions on what to check why ECU not getting signal from CPS?

    people, i recommend you to disconnect your battery before pulling or installing any relays.

    I think this will be helpful i have the same car and there is no power to the fuel pump, have a question can you actually start and run a car when fuel pump relay is connected with that bridge as shown in the video ?

    Question of fuel pressure. I have a E46 330I and checked the pressure at the shrader valve on the rail. It shows up 45 PSI when I turn the key and let the pump prime. Jumps to 50 PSI after I start the car. Then when I turn the car off, it stays within the threshold for 15 - 20 min. Then I start seeing a slow drop in pressure and is almost at 15 after 45 min. Is this normal or do you think if there is a issue?

    Interesting. As you say some cars may have only 2 relay. Well mine does. The left and middle one. I don't have the O2 sensor relay, or it located in another spot. Do you know why some have only 2?

    . BMW has many variances for relay locations. What year and model do you have? is it a U.S. or Euro spec? On some Euro BMW's the fuel pump relay was used to power the o2 heater

    Hello everyone. My E36 318 tds (M41) discharges the battery if it stays 3 to 4 days sitting on the garage. Battery is new. I've checked the relays and noticed that the System Main Relay (relay nº2) and the Oxigen Sensor Temp Relay (relay n.º 3) stay on after I remove the key from the ignition. Anyone knows if it should be that way or if they should turn off? Thanks.

    is the black connector to the pump supose to have power when key on? cause i hook up a multi meter to the connectors the white has 11volts and the black has none? 1995 BMW 325i sedan

    Damn I swapped those relays like you said and wires started burning and smoked blew out my air vents! No good!

      @@trentpope6239 luckily it was just one brown wire I was able to cut out the burnt section. The harness pack right above the blower motor under the hood

    you have good advice Now i have a 1995 325i v6 i just replaced the fuel pump do to having the car not run just turn like it did when you was pushing start button now i also replaced the fuel filter but its not same length as the other one way smaller but what o'reilly gave me was a shorter fat one but was suppose to be for my car now the problem i have once i got it to crank it ran fine but once i cutt it off it wouldnt crank does same thing again as your push button starting method any suggestions thanks

      As far as I know Oreilly's only carries Fram filters for our cars and I would be very careful about that. I would suggest only using oem BMW or Mahle, Mann filters for oil and fuel fueltration. There are a lot of CZcams videos about this subject please investigate. Thanks M.B.S.

      If it is a Wix filter than that is fine, But make sure the fuel flow arrow on the filter is pointing toward the engine side of the car. If it is not you will not get enough fuel to the engine and it may not start or will run poorly.

    I switch the relays the he saID AND MAN something burn under the dash by the passenger side so now i am worse than before

      He never said to swap the MAIN relay with the fuel pump relay..

    I have a 95 325i sedan (8/95) and it has a white top with a non ridged tube.
    I am having an issue with fuel pooling on top of fuel pump and spilling over. I was wondering if the wrong fuel pump could be my issue.
    I was planning on changing the o ring gasket and fixing any hairline cracks but was wondering if I needed to cap the hole off?

      Gregory Johnson new clamps are what you need or jb weld the ends of the hoses=no more gas pooling on top

    I honestly think someone (if not me) has screwed up the relay placement on my e36 325i (cabrio 1995). My fuel pump relay has 5 Terminals - Yours has 4. Any ideas there? Anywhere I can get a proper relay # & placement diagram anyone know?

      My 325i 1993 has also 5 terminals, and fuel pump relay is replacement with not original one , vehicle is loosing power.

    How do you know if you have a Euro spec BMW or U.S.? I used your troubleshooting advice on the fuel pump relay, bridging 30 to 87, but the secondary air pump turned on and I didn't hear anything at the fuel pump. Are relays in different positions depending on spec?

      you might want to check your VIN number on www.realoem.com so you know, of course there are plenty of "clues" that your e36 is an EURO or an US specs.

      +Martynas Vaidila 1992-1993 (early 93) M50 were non vanos engines then BMW started incorporating vanos into their engines.

    fuel pump,
    main relay,
    cranksenser,
    camsaftsensor,
    spark plugs, etc I was told might have bad DME? due to only will crank when check engine light comes on 2nd position...
    thats when it does come on,
    What makes that check engine light come on?
