QD: To help solve some of the curiosity around runners wearing half tights for marathons: chafing. I only wear half tights for marathons because they keep the inside of your thighs from chafing. It’s an easier solution than hoping a glide stick application lasts the whole race. They also usually have larger pockets for fuel during the race

QD: use half tights to avoid chafing in the groin area when I do long runs! Got the Nike aeroswift with the built-in liner breif. Love them and keeps everything in place!! Will use those next month in Boston.

Coming from a triathlon background, I’m used to tri shorts or half tights for three season running. The biggest advantage for me is that they reduce chaffing of my inner thighs during long runs.

As someone with tree trunks for legs, half tights are key to prevent rubbing/chafing. Especially on longer runs.

Half tights are an essential piece of my kit when I’m trail running through the Forrest as I need tight fitting clothing so it doesn’t catch on trees/bush, etc. I also throw them on in spring/fall to keep hamstrings warm. I can’t say enough about the lululemon half tights by far the best I’ve tried

For me it’s all about the chafing. No matter how much glide I apply, in shorts, anything over 15 miles requires a week off before I can walk again with all the chafing on my inner thighs. I ran NYC marathon last year in rather hot, humid conditions in some SOAR Half tights and had no chafing at all. And they were very comfortable even in the heat.

Half tights for every race and most long runs. Chafing prevention is fantastic. Janji and Tracksmith are my current faves. I also like Saysky, New Balance, Craft, Nike, and adidas but they're either lacking pockets or have some seams that can chafe so they're not perfect. With some of those I'll use a pair of Runderwear as a do-it-yourself liner.

  • @LR6092

I use them when the weather warrants them, not quite full tight winter weather but not split short summer season. The tracksmith half Reggie tights are amazing and have lasted me years

Big yes for half tights! I only don't wear them when I'm wearing long tights :D Favourite for training definitely is the Fusion C3 tight. The pockets on the side are perfect for phone and gels. For long races I prefer the Fusion Sli because it provides extra compression, very helpful in the latter stages of the race when muscle fatigue hits. For short and fast races I like the Nike Aeroswift Tights: a little bit more breathable and less restrictive for the bigger range of motion of fast running. If it's good enough for Kipchoge, it's good enough for me ;)

QD: I like running in half tights and really enjoy brands like Tracksmith who have started to include a liner with their tights/half tights. This solves the issue of whether or not to wear underwear with them and makes for a great seamless fit. I think half tights that include pockets are great since they're fit snug to your body whereas some split shorts may feel floppy when holding gels and such.

I only discovered half tights a year or so ago when I purchased some on sale online. I tried them and love them for those cooler days when tights are too warm and shorts not warm enough. I don't normally have chafing problems, but they do feel lighter and more sleek than most of my shorts (I don't go for split or really short shorts). I should invest in another pair or two so thanks for the review!

  • @TheScottyLincoln

I started using half tights more last year and now use them a lot. Definitely depends on the temperature and what I’m doing. I don’t like them if it’s really hot out though. They just feel comfortable and they do stop chaffing especially on longer faster runs. Also have to know which half tights you are buying. Some are specifically made for specific things. Example Soar has a few different styles specifically for different types of runs. Not going to buy a thicker half tight for a speed session and if you have a longer run you would want to buy a pair with the pockets for gels and phone.

I live in Malaysia where it is constantly 24 to 33 celsius (so 78-86 degrees), it's hot, humid, and brutal but I train and race in Half tights because I have "thick" thighs. I always have had big thighs and chaffing is bad. In high school, we wore 5' racing shorts, when I arrived at college, we ran in 3' and I bled every race. So, although its hot here in Malaysia the half tights prevent chaffing and has all the extra pockets for my gels instead of digging through my flip belt. I have underarmour, NB, but I love my BOA the most.

SOAR half tights are great! Pricey, sure, but so light! And you can tell this is a quality product. I raced Houston Half in these recently. I like to wear them for track workouts and any speedwork. You just "feel" faster in them.

First i like 2 say your gear reviews are great. From my perspective u could go even a little bit deeper in future content and it would be definetly interesting. You know as a casual runner we will never be able 2 get the same "overview" over gear (in this case half tights) like u do. We will only go in a store and try some and buy maybe 2-3 over the course of years. No chance of getting a decent comparison.
    QoD:
I live in Germany and like half of the year the temperatures are somewhat in de middle zone between 0 and 15 degree Celsius (32 - 59 fahrenheit) and in these temperatures half tights are a perfect choice. U keep your legs somewhat warm without toasting them. They are comfortable, the compression helps with recovery and they are pretty durable. So for me they are the go to pick for like 2/3rds of the year.
    Thanks for your content.

I’ve recently been thinking I need to give half tights a try. I struggle with both 3/4 and full length tights since I have always had heavyset legs and carry a lot of weight there. Over the course of the run the tights eventually drag down on my legs, gather below my knees, and almost seem to act like resistance bands. I live in Southern California so while I don’t experience frigid temperatures often it would be more comfortable to run in the low 40s with an extra layer on. Maybe half tights would fit the bill. Thanks for the info.

I wear half tights under my regular shorts in the mentioned range. just to get some extra warmth in my upper legs. I don't feel the need in my calves and knees at those temperatures. Below freezing i will bring out the warm full length tights. I have found my regular tights are not my thing so the mostly stay in the drawer.
If it gets around -10°C I will switch to a loose fitting pants, but that hardly ever happens here.

In the late fall, winter, and early spring any time the windchill is above 27 or so I'll wear them. This winter it's been most days were I'm at. It's been very mild. I like them because they keep your upper legs warm. I run really warm so I find myself sweating quite a bit with full tights in the 30s and up so in the winter half tights are perfect for keeping the large muscle groups warm and supported without causing me to over heat.

The only time I raced a half marathon it was a hot day, but they (Nike aeroswift) kept me very dry and cool for a 6:00 pm marathon in July. When it comes to track or xc, I always choose shorts, but when it come to a hard workout, or a colder long run, it’s half tights all the way.

Will they last 30 years? I didn't see a durability score.

I only ever wear half tights these days, I use them for training and racing and have done since the early 2000’s. I wear Nike for all my running gear.
I initially started wearing them for track sessions following a tight hamstring, then following my first few marathons I started to get friction burns on my inner thighs every time I wore normal shorts, so I started wearing the half tights and I’ve stuck with them. I now only own one pair of normal shorts and I only wear those when I go for a massage.

: been a BIG half tights guy for the past 10-12 years or so. i *only* race in half tights, not only because it prevents me from chafing (which i typically do on longer efforts), but they are also just super comfortable and look clean as a racing kit. i'll use them in pretty much any temperature, unless it's too cold. if it's too hot, i'll still wear them if i think i may chafe on my run, otherwise i'll grab the splitties and probably still chafe anyway

SOAR has 3 half tights or "speed shorts." The Half Tights have a rear zip pocket that probably holds a couple of gels. The Speed Shorts have no pockets. The Marathon Speed Shorts have a rear pocket/pouch that holds up to 6 gels and elastic loops on the waistband front that hold another 2 gels. Check out their web site. Good, but pricey.

I love half-tights for the weight and anti-chaffing. That said, I'll give a cautionary note from my 1st-time buying experience: Get a "normal size), i.e., don't size down. My working hypothesis is that there is a tradeoff between the effort exerted from stretching the tights and weight saving. Basically, if I find a good split-short in same weight as half-tights, I probably go split short all day. Then again, if I dont6want to think about anti-chaffing creme on long runs, half-tights can be great options!

I enjoy half tights or shorts with "built-in" half tights on colder runs and recovery runs when my legs are barking. However, there is nothing worse than trying to do a long run in cheap or ill-fitting half tights that don't have, as Seth said, "strategically placed seams". If you know, you know.

I run almost exclusively in half tights now because of chaffing! I wish I had chicken legs but thigh chaffing is terrible at times without tights for me.
I think you should factor price into the equation. I often run in the lulu's but I only have one pair. The Amazon 15$ version get the job done.

Currently, I don't own any half tights. The reason I'm looking, however, is I am not a small man and it's really about just being annoyed with so many running shorts that constantly ride up during even the shortest of runs. 🤷‍♂

How funny, I love half tights, I live in a hot city (average 30/36ºC) in São Paulo, Brazil. I like it because it keeps me cool and I don't retain so much liquids, more comfortable and I like the feeling of compression.

Sweaty wet shorts on a marathon sticking to my leg are awful and will cause chaffing, where half tights are perfect for heavy sweat, rainy conditions or hot conditions.

Almost nothing as nasty to have on is a pair of sweat soaked shorts..or running/racing in rain..half tites in warmer weather and long tites in cool/cold weather..tites, short, long or in-between have the advantage of shedding water and not get heavy from sweat or rain..compression shirts and tites are the way to go during a cold, rainy day..old school shorts remind me of a toddler with a soaked diaper half dragging behind them..

QD: You do not understand that need for half tights because as you say you have chicken legs. For us larger/muscular runners half tights really help cut down on the chafing. I live in Florida and always run in half tights because the humidity makes the chafing bad.

  • @TheAnikdam

Definitely not the comment of the day...
I LOVE half tights, but I won't run in them. I'm so glad you mentioned "seams," because that's the problem--including with the top three you held up today. I have yet to find a pair of half tights that does not have a seam going up the crack of the butt. This mystifies me. It's a terrible place for a seam. If you look at say, Under Armour's compression underwear, there ARE NO SEAMS in that spot, so why does everyone put them on half tights. They aren't needed for support! Instead, I wear compression shorts--mostly made by Under Armour that are meant to be worn underneath shorts or whatever, as my half tights. They do not have seams on the crack of the butt. Those are MY half tights and I will stand by wearing underwear as outerwear in that situation all day. Oh, and better compression, too.

after blowing lots of cash on running clothes I have some excellent La Sportiva trail half tights that I have ran two marathons in, mainly because of the pockets, they're also made from a recycled material, a nice bonus was the hamstring compression they gave me too. Now I've gone back to basics and will go with my most comfortable pair of shorts which happen to be from Decathlon for my next Marathon. Easy, light, comfortable nothing too fancy....! I'll also make the same type of choice for my shoe....!

Half tights with pockets are a great altrnative for statically transporting your phone. Bonus points for half tight pockets that have an upper closing.
