I've always been slightly interested about the Frisians, they're language is so closely related to English, yet most people don't even know they exist. I'm glad I finally can say I know why there are "hearts" all over their flag.
The Keksadler Glad you could find out more in this video :
I came to know the same thing. I live in Amsterdam, but my mother is Frisian so I also speak Frisian. As I started to learn English I realised there are a lot of interfaces with the English language!
Danke wol mon vien et mooi dast dit no wist
@@historywithhilbert146 Groningen was Central Frisia,,,,,,that city was built to divide Frisia.....
Medieval people really liked water lillies
LOL - Lots of Lillies
You can actually eat waterlillies. czcams.com/video/ESA2P5pgZxc/video.html
Yes and get high
B-List History
The Franks see the water lilies and raise their own lilies.
did you know water lillies are one of the most dangerous plants out there?
if you lay under them for more than 10-15 minutes you're probably dead.
(yes, it's an old dutch dad joke)
MOAR FRISIA!
Or anything really. Love your content!
Dankewol!
Means a lot!
It may be a waterlily, but I'm still going to treat it like a heart, because it's lovely :)
Bram06 that makes the frisian flag the groninger flag.
The real question should then be, can you outrun a mob of angry Frisians?
No, but seriously the reaction of most Frisians would be something like this: ffs this again? POMBEBLÊDEN! Not hearts. The mistake is also made a lot by Dutchies.
And I honestly don't know why they're red instead of green, maybe it has something to do with the blood of those who fought for freedom, like red seems to symbolize a lot when it's used on flags (got that from Geographynow).
Nee do domme dongbult!!! it binne Pompeblêden
grapje natuurlijk
my first thought was "heart" and my second guess was "upside down scrotum"
Fantastic content. Always enjoy your content, I usually learn something new.
Keep up the content Hilbert!
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
This has been a very informative video! Thanks for sharing so much good info. I'm an American with English (from Yorkshire), Dutch, German, French, Swiss, as well as Welsh, Scottish and Irish heritage - you typical American mix! I love to learn about where my ancestors came from, and the history behind their migrations. Cool stuff!
Great video man, love your content.
North Frisian here love to finally see more content about the Frisians on CZcams
Much more interesting than I initially expected.

You make learning history enjoyable. If you can, I’d like to see a video on the Danish colonial empire.
Kwaliteit! Ga zo door!
Dankjewel! Zal ik doen!
I bet it's been used in countless of wars.. I imagine seeing it in the battlefield.. oh the leaf of death. I love it.. keep up the great work.
excellent video, Hilbert. cheers!
The Danes have ♡ on their coins....
Literally! Although they are technically still waterlily petals ;)
How can any nation compete with such a sexy flag? It's not fair.
With you I can talk!
History With Hilbert yea man my Twitter handle is @JanJan_kokoko follow me and we can dm
Ugh, I remember when I first saw the flag they ended up choosing over the Nordic cross design... I died a little inside.
0:12 West Friesland is actually in Noord-Holland
My father is Dutch and ethnically Frisian and he would love your channel
Nicely explained, I love that frisian flag!😁
I do have a soft spot for 't Yorkshire Rose as well ;)

End the confusion and make them green you Frisians!
Ian Swart That would confirmed look awful!
Hey man, any chance of an im depth video about the history of Friesland? I've always been interested and itd be nice to see a native do a video on the subject.
Do you only do history vids? I was thinking of broadening my channel with language videos with some historical background. Any tips for what to include (I did study Frisian for a semester at university, so I have some info, but still)?
I use to play the Eredivisie with Heerenveen on PES,so i saw this flag a lot.
I see the heart design, but think it looks more like a red fortune cookie.
Yo hilbert. Have you ever concidered making a video about something related to the Limburgers? It's a province in The Netherlands and Belgium. We have our own language that originated as a dialect of middle dutch and the first dutch text was actually written by a Limburger called hendrik van veldeke. We also have our own low countried styled culture and we differ a lot from hollanders and flemings. Our language is very interesting on it's own because pretty much every village and city has a different take on the Limburgian language because of our very divided history. For example someone from Kerkrade or Vaals sounds radicly different from someone from Venlo (also it's related to the Luxemburgian language). I hope you concider researching it since you have an obvious love for history of the netherlands.
great video p.s. more video on Symbol
Thanks man, got one coming on the Hammer and Sickle :)
gott - great
First I thought a bean, then a heart, now I know and can rest easy.
What I always wondered about is the mutual intelligibility of the different Frisian languages/dialects.
I think they are borderline intelligible depending on the language and dialect (the insular North Frisian ones can be a real struggle) although I can get anywhere from 20 - 60% of Seeltersk Frysk or the various North Frisian dialects.
All Frisian "languages" are heavily influenced by their respecting countries... Western Frisian is 30% Dutch (I pulled that figure out of my ass) and the ones in germany are influenced by german I assume.
The Pompelbêd also shows up on the family crest of my ancestor Nils Knutsson Ribbing, from Västergötland in Sweden.
Pompebled seems to be a play on words. Firstly, it would be inferred as a heart because "pump blood". Secondly, it would be associated with Water Lilly leaves as the "blade of the pond". Putting the two ideas together generates a very interesting concept for a symbol: those who live and love the life aquatic.
>A FUCKING HEART

Net zoals Jan Pieterszoon Coen.
Better than a fookin leaf
The Anglo-Saxons lived together with Low Saxons and Frisians in East-Frisia in Germany, because the the West-Frisian terretories were often occupied by the romans. The native East-Frisians have the same genetic code of native Anglo-Saxon people in Northumbria and East-Anglia. People who speak Sater-Frisian in Germany with experience in East-Frisian Low German dialects understand Old English, West-Frisian and Dutch without learning the other three languages. The Netherlands and English people forgotten always their real german roots from East- and North-Frisia in Germany who lived in the same areas with vikings and Anglo-Saxons. The viking settlement in Hedeby/ Haithabu in Schleswig-Holstein/Germany was a trading post for danish vikings and North-Frisians
The Gudrun Epic (written down in the 13th century) pretty much still describes the Frisian flag as it exists today.

There are 12 dutch provinces :)
Drenthe is a hoax
By "weapon" you mean "arms". I've never seen the term "weapon" to signify heraldry in English. The correct term is "arms" or "coat of arms".
In Dutch it’s called a ‘wapen’ which means ‘weapon’. Maybe that’s where his use of the word weapon comes from. It could also be a name in the English language since Dutch and English are related languages, but I don’t know that for sure.
You’re right, (coat of) arms is the right translation for ‘wapen’ and ‘weapon’ solely means something to attack someone with, like a sword or a gun :)
leuk filmke hest makke. groeten út Fryslân
Its really interresting, as someone from groningen, to look up how the frisian ommelanden and saxon groningen came to be
Hilbert where did you (or your parents) live in Fryslân before they left for the UK? The province is so small there's quite a chance I know people that knew your parents. Greetings from Offenwier!
My grandpa is from Frisia love this vid.
Little tip: stick to the English names of provinces, it's a little weird when hearing the Dutch names like that in an English vid.
He's Dutch
ooh I always thought they were hearts but water lily leaves are just as cute
CZcams likes to cut videos a bit short so you should elongate them by a few seconds so it doesnt cut you off
Thanks for the tip - will do!
I'm half Frisian, my pakka & beppe brought my dad over to America when he was a baby. I grew up speaking Frisian & dutch, following Frisian customs, etc.
I'm ashamed to say, I _always_ thought they were hearts!!!
Bûtter brea & griine tsies..... Greetz 😎
The ‘pompeblêd’ is actually the leaf of the Nuphar lutea or the yellow water-lily, not of the white water-lily (Nymphaea alba). The yellow water-lily is also the ‘national’ plant of the province of Frisia.
Thanks for another great video! So, also Lüneburg? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Brunswick-Lüneburg
Grappig dat ik dit voor het eerst hoor, en dat het door een engels talige gast.
2:30 a video where "Ladbergen" is mentioned!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sjøblad in Norwegian and Sjöblad in Swedish!
this video gives me real engineering vibes :)
This video was super interesting, but I felt like it left something out... Does the pompeblêd actually mean anything ? I mean I understand it's a water lily, but why choose that as a symbol, what is it so aesthetically significant ? (I understand what the lions on the aformentioned danish coat of arms represent for instance, that's rather straightforward, but I don't necessarily see why there would be little plants on a flag or coat of arms, get me ?) Or maybe all we know is that it was on coats of arms as far back as Tecklenburg's in the Middle Ages, and assume just sort of spread ?
First time I saw this was I think there's a soccer team in Holland that has the symbol on their Shield
could you do one on the flag of milan? It makes no sense to me
Andrei Skobtsov With the legs?
with the man being devoured by the serpent, have got no clue why we have it
Hilbert Did you know they are now filming a movie about king Redbad, here in The Netherlands?
Lewer duad üs slaav my frisian brothers! Adjis and greetings from Northfrisia/Germany
Now I'm curious about the heraldic meanings of my favorite breakfast cereal: Lucky Charms.
Fun fact, an upside down heart on a coat of arms actually depicts testicles
Really xD? Maybe it was all just a big joke to have a laugh before going into battle xD
Probably it's a symbol of virility and masculinity, and not humorous in nature.
check out the Italian conditori Bartolomeo Colleoni and his family coat of arms. he got's three pairs of testicles on his shield, and they are very shockingly realistically depicted on monuments in his honor.
Unless you count North and South Holland as one province, the Netherlands have 12, not 11 ;) Keep up the food work! Ga zo door!
If they were to ever redesign their flag they should make the water lilies green. just a suggestion so that the don’t look too similar to red love hearts.
The red on blue hurts my eyes, plz have more contrast in future videos
Fryslân, the land of my ancestors❤
Nuphar lutea is the latin name of the pompeblêden. So it is not actually the water lily that you showed. Still a very interesting movie!
Why is the water lilly leaf on Essen's shield being so far from Fresia?
Friesland WAS once one of the 11 provinces, now it IS one of the 12 provinces! ✌🏼
0:14/1:58 West Friesland is actually still a region in the province of Noord Holland
Hilbert, where are you actually from? I've never been able to work out if you're Dutch or Northumbrian...
parents from one, actual birth place in the other.
Very interesting, but doesn't the Frisian word "pompebled" imply pumping blood (i.e hearts)?
I spent 8 months in the Netherlands
City of gorngen
When I get back, my first trip will be to Fritz Land
ali nour You should do! If you'd like any advice on things to see and places to go that are historical just ask :)
I your video :)
Dumb question: why have they always been red? And bright red at that? Many plant species' leaves turn red or purple at stress times like winter hibernation or drought. But I am curious why they wouldn't be a, more recognizable as lily leaf, green color? And some of the older versions, that you show, have the point at the bottom, making them even more heart shaped. The northern lily pads are overwhelmingly rounded at the far end like the Friesian flags ones of today.
They weren't always red, the earliest attested uses of the pompeblêden (sometimes referred to as hearts) painted them white. The various coats of arms of scandinavian kings were a large influence on the designs of frisians flags. The (alleged) first account of red ones was on the coat of arms Magnus III of sweden, later similar designs started popping up in frisian communities. If you look at the current swedish coat of arms, you will find in the corners two fields that look awfully reminiscent of the frisian flag, but with golden lions instead of the red pompeblêden. Its likely that the symbol started in white, but with the use of white fields on flags, the color had to be changed to stand out from the background, with red probably being either the easiest or most recognizable color to use, rather than green which would blend in with any natural environment. It could also be because red and gold were considered similar motifs in medieval society, as they were both associated with royalty, so it could be an adaption of the gold color also commonly found in swedish designs.
why is the pompeblêden red, if lily leaves are green?
12th Probably Frankish blood?
One of "eleven" Dutch provinces. Hilbert we have twelve provinces, Flevoland also exist sinds the first of januari 1986 :p
😁👍
What you're really telling us is that the artist who first drew these wasn't very good because they look too much like hearts and nobody would recognize them as water lilies without being told that they are water lilies. Which is also true of the heart design because real hearts don't actually look like that either.
The flag the council chose looks like it was drawn by a committee. The one with the cross was far superior, but it's not my flag, the Council had every right to choose what they wanted, I simply question their taste.
What’s the background on your love of Northumbria?
I live in Northumberland :)
History With Hilbert So... the new total war title... couldn’t they have at least made the art accurate?
You talk about West-Friesland but what is this? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Friesland_(region)
It's a tricky term because in Dutch when one says "West Friesland" they mean the northern part of the historically Frisian county of Holland. However when one says it in English they mean the Province of Friesland in the Netherlands to distinguish between the alternative East Friesland and North Friesland in Germany.
Hey Hilbert, you should definitely do a video on this..
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohawk_Dutch
Also, you may have already done this, and I just can't remember it in detail, but this page on Wiki has a good breakdown of how the Frisian languages were diluted by Brabatian Dutch languages.. Although I'm sure you're already aware of this..
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollandic_dialect
I see where you are going but its not correct en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frisia .
West Frisia in the Netherlands corresponds roughly to:
-the province of Friesland
-the province of Groningen
-the northern parts of the province of North Holland, historical West Friesland
So to distinguish the two geographical areas you should have used "East Frisia" and "West Frisia" instead of West Friesland. Also I am born in West Friesland, sry to have been triggered :-)
In general you can use Patreons or some good friends to preview your vids a couple of days early as to avoid these mistakes :-) (see also your last vid about the Russian rev and misplacing Moskva, so two in a row). If you dont have Patreons this might be an extra reason to get some :P
I live in West-Friesland. Within the Netherlands it is indeed considered a northern part of North Holland. Outside of the Netherlands, West Friesland apparently is the province of Friesland, as it is seen from a wider multinational perspective.
"They're not just really horny" Best part of the video.
This is the province I live in
Maybe the love heart was first a pompebled and people draw this as a love sign or gave the flowers or leaves as a love sign!!!
Now I'm thinking, when do the common heart symbol that we know of came from? Why is the Frisian water lily, red? The similarities is uncanny, as though they are related.
Walter lilies sure give the Frisian flag a lot of "pomp".
What about more ancient symbols?
Probably, through a weird story, the pompeblêd turned into the heart.
I think it needs to be explained how a leaf got to be red. Also you forgot Saterland on your map of Frisian lands.
Why didn't you mention anything about pompebleden?
In the German East-friesia is a province called just friesia
I’m from Norfolk in England and my ancestors are Frisians
i was going to guess tulip
11? TWELVE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
My guess was a kidney. But I don't think you can sell one of your two pompeblêd. Oh well. I like these facts.
3:39 Heh, King Cnut....
Come on bud what happened to Alfred the great vid😕
martin Bassett Mentioned Alfred in my last video ;)
Friesian is so close to English I can almost understand it.
Louis Baker it's interesting to see how close they still are in some aspects :)
If English was spoken without any other influence it would be nigh on identical. :)
11 provinces? Which are you excluding?
One of 11 Dutch provinces? Last time I checked we had 12..?
1- Zuid-Holland
2- Noord-Holland
3- Friesland
4- Groningen
5- Drente
6- Overijsel
7- Gelderland
8- Limburg
9- Utrecht
10- Noord-Brabant
11- Flevoland
12- Zeeland
Correct me if I am wrong though.
Total Warrior you forgot flanders!😂😂😂😂😂😂... um sorry...
MSP flanders isnt dutch
Hmm
But…why water lilies? Did they signify something?
What exactly are Sea Countries?
Russell Jenkins Good question 😂 Most likely juridicial areas originally under leadership of a certain group used to divide the land?
why didn't you mention that the provincial flag of fryslân and those of other "modern" frisian regions are all relatively new? The frisian provincial flag was introduced in the late 19th century and the others way after the second world war.
I guessed tulip.
Not a bad guess given our obsession with em ;)
