I’ve been roofing for 25 years You should never remove the basket entirely. It doesn’t 2 things it keeps debris from going into the plumbing but also acts as a flow restrictor so you don’t blow the plumbing apart inside the building because of the amount of pressure that built up water has behind it. I saw it happen one time in an old high rise downtown Toronto. The wall blew open and shot water through a lawyers office like a cannon after I had slowly unclogged the drain from debris.

I’ve been in the construction/roofing business for nearly 40 years, sometimes roof drains screens have not been cared for unless there is a problem, many times I’ve seen up to a foot of standing water depending on the parapet size…you have to let it out slowly or the out rush will separate the drain lines….the dilemma… leave off the screens and let the loose material thru or catch everything and deal with this! These drains can be up to a foot in diameter, this was a very small example….

That is SO much extra weight! Literally TONS.
It appears to be 9 asphalt rolls wide, normally each roll is 3 feet wide. Let's round that up to 30 feet total for easy math. The length also appears to be at LEAST twice as long as it is wide; so 60 feet. Let's call the depth of the water about an inch.
That is roughly 150 cubic feet, or 1,122 gallons. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds.
Meaning there is nearly 10,000 pounds of water on that roof!

The idea is to clean before the rain. I have a balcony, and pigeons keep shitting and bringing filth all over it. Unless I clean it before winter, the drain will get clogged and water will get into the house.

That needs a secondary drain system. NO roof should hold water like that EVER...

Works just as well as a gutter leaf guard, destroying roofs everywhere.
