- A guide and explanation of how the Online Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain works. Kinda like a all you need to know for MGS Online FOB PvP gameplay.
After this guide you will know how to manage staff, build security devices and understand what is being fought over / potentially lost.

A month long update: You are more or less blackmailed into participating whether you want to or not.
Alright mate ') This is by far the best explained video I've come across on these online FOB"s...I'm almost at mission 21 too.
As I'm sure you're aware this outstanding game is free on the psn this month so I gave it a go and havnt looked back!

This video has a lot of NONSENSE in it, like your BASE STILL GETS ATTACK WHEN YOU’RE OFFLINE.
You are forced to play FOB because of a story mission and all of your resources goes to your online FOBS and then it processes them. Basically if you don’t invade other FOBS the amount of time it will take you to get resources will be months and months, especially if you want to upgrade a lot or If you’re trying to get the Achievements.

Why is my game trying to force me to use my coins and build a fob? If my internet cable is connected it shows a red arrow which leads me to it. Once in it won't let me back out without clicking the build fob. No back out no nothing. The only way I could get out of the menu was to pull the cable. Wtf is up with that?

I noticed some guns in developmental are colored gold, what does that mean?
Are the personnel in Security the only ones that are in FOB? I wasn't clear on how to tell if a staff member is on FOB or not.
Do new recruits on NONE FOB missions automatically go to FOB?

Why am I forced to play FOB? If you accidentally go online the computer locks and I have to do a restart. Playing offline in Steam is the only safe way. I hate playing online so I am being persecuted as I cant play prperly , from a angry player
I suspect it was Konami trying to force a gamble / pay mp in the game - Dont see why Hideo would make or force such a thing on players.
Exactly. This doesn't just look like, it IS blackmail. Blackmailing the player into spending real cash.

I think more than 2 is overkill. Depends how invested you want to be in the MP.
I can see it being very fun and does it get addictive. But be prepared to be hit back.
It is worth trying but it won't be a long time / go back to game.
i don't like some aspect of multiplayer gaming, this fob is one of them. this is not really fair setup of multiplayer gaming experience. this system favor the aggressor simply because you control the infiltrator. on the other hand, the defenders have very limited options to defend the base. we practically have rely on the system ai to defend our base? are you serious? this all still a fair game when you made this video, but people are getting better before you know it. on the other hand, we can at least lock some valuable staffs. but we still can't transfer resources to offline. i personally don't mind losing resources, they just numbers and can be obtain quite easily. i rather play this game when the hype is over to minimize the problems.

great video man. How do you assign a particular weapon to your security?
+lucas buonafine Good question, not seen a direct equipment thing in the UI. But based on the green label weapons you already have developed the guards will be equipped accordingly based on the level of preparedness and weapon type and range you give them in security settings.
Personally I made sure I developed the best tier weapons and bought max preparedness and mixed and matched certain platforms with mid to long range.
It just looks like you can broadly tune the settings and the comp takes care of the rest. But if I find a way to directly equip so and so with a weapon I will change this post and get back to you.
What was the clip in the beginning? Is that a mode to be released?

Do you know why I always get x0.2 reward ?
90% of my resources are online, so fuck this. But I really recommend you do the event FOBs, since those are against an AI, not a player, and offers some great rewards.
Does the security staff automatically defend your FOB? Or also your motherbase?

everyone i face has fully battle gear with helmets about 30-50 people per deck and full defences makes it impossible :/?
+Connor baker I appreciate this and have seen it myself. Might make another video showing how to get around it. But guards with helmets can still be one shotted, just shoot them in the face with lethal and non lethal weapons rather than the cranium.
You can also use sleep grenades or sleep mines or just shoot darts at exposed areas to incapacitate them.
I was reading that infiltrators really have the odds stacked against them. Defenders are really OP. But in a way it is good that the infiltrations are not a walk in the park otherwise everyone would be loosing their stuff too easily.
Or maybe try and infiltrate lower targets with lower levels until you have better developments?
I have all high devs now but im coming accross people with like full battle dress and these are even the lower guys im facing closest i got to winning past 3 days is i cleared one deck robbed res then i was screwed
+Connor baker Yeah they need to balance it a bit because infiltrators get shafted for one error. At least give them more than one attempt. That is why I tell people just fill them with anyone when starting out it is still quite hard to get past E guards when they are decked out in armour.
Infiltrating actually needs some skill so the Online FOB really is not that bad for those worried about losing shit. But it seems you are doing alright in it so far :D
But I agree with you it is still tricky despite all that :D

one question, is there a way to sell online resources? I have 29 tanks stuck in online and I couldn't sell them. That's a lot money

Once the resources are processed you can use them for development / construction tasks. But unfortunately you can't sell your processed resources from your online FOB :(
Be sure to check your PF ratings though as you get points after each simulated battle to buy things with. Should be able to sell that, well, if it goes to your offline that is.

I paused at 4:18, I quit playing this game about 2 years ago and am just now getting back into it, my Online numbers are extremely higher than my offline, any idea why?
I came looking for info right after doing the defense mission, I haven't done the infiltration tutorial yet tho.

Fo0t_Soulja basically when your console/PC is connected to the internet, everything you collect becomes your online resources I think, as I have like literally no resources offline. I think maybe if you do a load of missions offline then you should get some offline GMP and resources? Shot in the dark but hopefully that helps

Tobi rodriguez Just direct contract your best staff. Like the video said you can't loose any off line resources. Your best bet is to just do the events. Those bases will not retaliate against you and you can get some great rewards from them.
Does an offline FOB show up on other ppls list of FOBs to attack? Can you be attacked while offline? and does ur FOB mine resources while offline?

Once your FOB is made and it syncs online you can get attacked. You wont see the damage until you resync online. No point trying to evade it, might as well get in on the fun. Once you get attacked there is a 25 hour block anyways. Plus defenders are OP in comparison to infiltrators.
The people that you can attack / can attack you will be groups of people at roughly the same level / skill band as you. The better / more successful you are the better your foes and targets.
To be fair you can't escape it.
Your resources process in real time and I think it is whilst you're in the game because I have so many unprocessed resources that never seem to be dealt with while offline.

What are the determining factors? Do you know?
Unfortunately not, it was not explained well to begin with by the devs. But I mean if that were the case then people would just storm bases with RPGs or explosives and take out your entire security team. Probably depends on frequency etcetera.
I have had tons of guards die in my FOB infiltration report but still had my security team level remain roughly the same. I could see them in the sick bay, once they returned so did the previous security team level.
Best bet is to keep collecting guards that way any permanent losses will be filled up immediately by those in the waiting room (providing you allow the computer to auto assign).

When you demonstrated the ratio of online to offline resources the Minor Material and Precious Metals were flipped. Does that mean that the resources are more readily available online?

Not sure I get the question so please let me know if it does not answer what you were asking.
But any changes in the figures was because I had a new batch of resources coming in / waiting to be processed. If you look after your online FOB any unprocessed materials can be turned into processed / thus making them part of your offline resource pool which cannot be subject to theft (not sure how long it takes to process but it happens anyway whether you are offline or online).

Thanks for getting back to me. Allow me to clarify.
When you showed us all the materials available online from the unprocessed menu, the ratio for Precious Metals featured available online while was flipped with a higher ratio of 75 with a globe over 25. In this case, the ratio was flipped showing more accessible to theft than not, unlike the others.
Am I correct here?
+fuckitaly06worldcup Don't treat it as fractions or ratios the sums always changes based on events. It is merely showing you a break down of what can be taken (figure with a globe next to it) and what cannot be taken (figure without a globe).
I have heard that resources are more readily available online but it will depend on what geographical location you pick in the beginning for your FOB. I have plucked the list off IGN in the beginning or you can google it to see rates of yield.
However the more developed Offline Mother Base is the quicker you get resources coming in anyways. I would focus on maxing out Mother Base as a a matter of priority before worrying too much about Online FOB. Many people have built lots of level 1's which makes it easy for infiltrators to waltz in. Best to have 2-3 bases at level 3-4 and a maxed out Mother Base getting you plentiful resources. Especially if infiltrators can't touch them.
By the way what do you mean by flipped? I think that word is confusing me. Sorry :)
