    So weird, my dad and I did exactly what you were talking about (I’m visually impaired and we always skied together, me following him closely). But we always started on our favourite blue runs on first morning, get our eyes in, warm our legs up, gentle wide, gentle turns. We never worried about speed, but even less so on our first morning. By end of first day, we both knew we’d want to do our favourite red - and my mum and sister hated it so they’d go for hot chocolate. My brother and his mate reckoned they’d keep up with us - my dads and my trick was never to worry about how fast we went, just always be in control, always be able to stop - and most importantly, always smiling! And my brothers mate was always in the chair for the first round at the end of the last round! My dad and I? Our cheeks hurt as much as our legs from smiling so much, as we’d had glorious skiing!

    Returning to skiing after some 15 years or so this weekend at Les Arcs :) . I was surprised at the change in shape/design of the skis over that period. (I used to use 195cm "giant slalom turn" Lange skiis). The e-rally Head 170cm I have now are more waisted,shorter and stiffer. But really struggle getting parallel on steeper slopes, blues are a comfort zone for me. Any tips on how to progress on steeper slopes. I have a ski holiday booked to Val Torens in March, really wanting to push myself and try progress. Any tips or any advice for skiing VT would be greatly appreciated. Hope your well :D

    The principle of least action is the guide to conservation of momentum. Good physics is hard to find. To ski well ...be well. If you keep your fitness and NEVER lose it you will always be only a few days training away from competition strength. Few of us has full time jobs requiring us to ski well and always have a good joke ready to tell. Even in the twilight of my career some people still think I am pretty good at skiing, in spite most of my slope time is doing level 1 flat land wedge lessons. .When I get to ski with other instructors they are always mining me for information so I always have to slow myself down contain the beast and clearly express how the things I do happen.

      I injured myself and forgot how to ski properly. I over-compensated because of my torn meniscus which resulted in me skiing on one leg. My lifelong skiing German friend couldn't help. It was only after another new skier friend saw what I was doing and remedied it from what his instructor told him. It was exactly as you did, going through the motions. Each step needs to be repeated a few times, especially if your technique is poor/self taught.

      To my eyes planting poles through that would look staggeringly affected, pointless, awkward and like a badly taught Skiier. What would it have achieved, except upset balance and interrupt smoothness ? There’s no way you’d be using the poles to pivot around, nor indeed any need to. Bizarre pole plants seems to be something that awkward skiers do. Unless there’s a reason to - don’t do it. The reason to do it is rarely present. I totally agree with the thrust of this video - smoothness, progressiveness, and having proportionality in the skiing is important - and is so often lacking. It’s an ironically difficult thing to tune into, and always helpful to revisit.
      To need to use sticks to turn when making these sorts of turns. Omg !!! I just cannot envisage anyway that a pole plant would make this work any better. I mean seriously ?!?!?! What on earth would pole plants achieve. The only reason to be carrying sticks here is to use them in the lift queue at the bottom. Seriously - doing this run without the distraction of poles would only be a benefit. Thanks for the video ! Nice !

    • @Gt3ch
      @Gt3ch Před rokem

      Sorry to say but they’re not called “sticks” they’re “poles.” Using them is called a “pole plant.” Pole plants are completely unnecessary most of the time- esp for what he is demonstrating, and the kind of terrain he is on. Oh and by the way he is holding a camera with one hand and managed a few pole plants with the other anyway. 🤷‍♂️

    If you haven't skied for a few years, you want to be making sliding turns not carved turns. When you make a carved turn, your upper body is forced to decelerate because your feet are not going down the hill at the same rate, so Pressure, Tension and Torsion build up in your legs. If you stand more erect, your skis will be flatter on the snow and as the skis turn, they will slide more sideways and travel down the hill at closer to the speed of your upper body.
    When you want to slow down, you can lean your pelvis into the turn and apply pressure to the tongue of your boot to create a steep leg angle so the edges bite more and the skis and tips bend more so they turn into the hill more. Then you can stand up straighter coming out of that turn to relax your muscles and slide around the next turn.
    4:00 Yes but HOW? There is no, How? There is only, what! Where is the hip adjustment and the pressure on the tips so the skis bend more? Ski teaching needs telling, not just Showing.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  Před rokem +3

      Oh gosh…. So much to pick apart here, where to begin!…
      I think I’ll keep it simple for you and use a classic instructor phrase; used it in this video and is taught in many many sports… “tactics before technique”… meaning I’ve very deliberately not talked about technique here (the “how” as you say)….rhythms, timing,” & shape of turns… all easy things to change, work for all abilities, adaptable as you get your feet and head tuned in, still relevant to the highest level- and will improve someone’s sliding when they get back on the snow- be this the first piste or two of the day, or the first piste or two after years break!
      Try it… ignore your technical inputs mentioned here and just focus on tactics! It’ll be a game changer for your personal skiing and your teaching! 👌👌

      I explained in detail how they can get down the slope with the least amount of muscle tension while still controlling their speed. You just showed them how to roll from edge to edge which will make them go faster and faster and then Just told them to make shorter radius turns to slow down without telling them what to do with their bodies to make that happen.
