Passive Cross over network for Sub woofer

  • This video is for making a simple Crossover filter network for use with a Sub woofer, which cuts down higher audio frequencies above 200 Hz. This network will pass low frequency range of 20 to 200 cycles which is most suitable band for a sub woofer. This network can handle sufficient power upto 300 watts. For higher power, the coil wire has to be thicker . A non polar 100 mfd capacitor can be made by joining negative ends of two 200 mfd 100 volt capacitors which becomes 100 mfd 200 volt.
    If the coil is made with a coil winding machine you can check the no. of turns. Otherwise you have to calculate the weight of the wire from wire gauge chart. I shall share about other types of network for two way and three way speaker systems in my next episodes of Making Loudspeaker series.

    Nice idea Sir. Yes, the bass is more gain. But that's much better to call; 'high frequency killer', than a :subwoofer booster'. Because the amount of power from amplifier to distribute in speaker is decreased by cancelled high frequency. Anyway thanks for video.

    What is the permeability of iron core that you used in the video?
    Can you suggest online calculator (or formula) for inductance with multilayer iron core [like steel core with permeability of 2000]

    • @makingloudspeaker
      @makingloudspeaker  Před 3 lety

      The inductor coil shown in the video is made on trial basis.
      However,
      The absolute permeability of a soft iron core is given as 80 milli-henries/m (80.10-3). ... While, air may have a permeability of just one, some ferrite and permalloy materials can have a permeability of 10,000 or more.

      Thanks for your comments.There is a standard equation to find out the values of C and L for any crossover frequency and impedance.
      That is C=1/2πfR and L=R/2πf
      You can find out values of inductors and capacitor as required.
