How Jesus Used His Trial To Teach Christology: The Mark Series pt 62 (

  • Mark is one of the favorite books of skeptics of Christianity. They will sometimes say that it has "low Christology" (a low view of who Jesus was) and suggest that this is evidence that belief in the deity of Christ came not from Jesus and the apostles teachings but from other people "developing" Christianity afterward. Others will claim that orthodox Christian teaching about how Jesus died on the cross to suffer the just punishment of our sins so that we could be forgiven, as an atoning sacrifice, is an invention of Christians coming centuries after the time of Christ and the apostles. One of the reasons I love the book of Mark is because a careful study of it shows that all of those claims are false. In today's study we will look at Jesus on trial before the high priest and we'll see that there are two major lessons that Jesus wants to teach everyone about the nature of the Messiah. The Messiah is divine and the Messiah must suffer and die for the sins of others. Not only do these two teachings refute how some have distorted the Gospel of Mark, these teachings are actually central to the whole Gospel. They come at the climax of Mark's message and they reveal that the divine nature and the atoning work of the Messiah are absolutely essential in the Gospel of Mark.
    I love this stuff!
This is part 62 of the Mark Series, going verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark. Today we are in chapter 14:53-72.

Loved this: I spent 40-years in word-of-faith/charismatic/Emergent/NAR/ARC-churches that all taught me that Isaiah was about ME. I began a bit of deconstruction in my theologies w/ the help of yourself/Washer/Sproul/Baucham...but mostly w/ a CLEAN reading of Scripture...that “it’s ALL ABOUT JESUS”! I read these very passages this morning before I listened to this video, & it’s been like reading Isaiah w/ this immensely larger perspective, so much more beautiful and more powerful! Those contemporary churches I’ve spent my life in....they’re making the Gospel so disgustingly cheap and small!

I believe that what I understood(learned) is that at that moment Jesus HAD to answer them by saying "I Am..." because in order for him to be condemned to death that was the only thing they could use to kill Him. 20:55 🐈 *Kitty!* Finally! I was beginning to fear the worst... HEY KITTY! (And I'm glad you're addressing these oddball "life applications"... I hadn't heard the St. Peter one where his proximity to Jesus the Lamb of God was about anything besides the scattering.) St. Mark is great! I think the order of the books was St. Matthew first, and then St. Peter told St. John Mark to write up something because people weren't getting copies of the big one (Matthew) yet. St. Luke in 52AD or so, to Theopholis for the same reasons as John Mark was scribing (due to scribes not copying St. Matthew fast enough, plus St. Luke seems to have been talking to the Holy Mother).
And then St. John probably wrote that Gospel during Nero's reign. Also, I don't mean to question Church Fathers, but since the Greek in the Gospel of St. John and his letters was apparently better than the Greek in Apoc/Revelation, I don't think it's implausible that St. John wrote the Apoc. _before_ writing his Gospel and the epistles. I don't think it's a matter of Salvation, of course, but just an interesting way to look at the timeline. St. Paul was being held prisoner for a good time, probably released twice for a short time, and not overly thrilled with Judaizers in Asia and Judea: great time for a Revelation from an Apostle!
Regardless, I tend to think it was all written by 70AD. Before the great fire of Rome in the awful reign of Nero, before the Temple was *Demolished* as prophesied by Jesus in ~30AD, before Vesuvius: yes, an "early Apocalypse/Revelation" would have been somewhat *_...eye-opening!_* (Not married to the idea though, it just makes some sense to me.)

Pastor Mike, you are just so useful in God's hands!
After getting my question answered on your Q&A a week ago, I am finally catching up, going through the Mark series with you (was way behind as I started only a few months ago) and, today, I reach THIS awesomeness right here!
I will be going back through this video with a fine-toothed comb as I think I have finally found what I needed to help my Mormon family see the Trinity for what it really is and, hopefully, the true God and Savior of the bible.
Your detail, verse references, theology, apologetics and clear way of showing how the whole thing TRULY points not only to Jesus but to Him being more than a Messiah, is a moment of true joy for me right now! GOD WITH US! So many things I have read and pondered, separately, before... all now finally pieced together in an image that had always been one big puzzle from the very beginning!
Thank you for this! I just can't find adequate words to express how truly grateful I am.

Hi Mike, thank you for all you are doing for us, giving us such in depth understanding of His word. I wonder if you could spend some time on 'turning the other cheek' my thoughts are that some may think of doing this without responding in love and encouraging those who come against us to see things differently. My fear is that Christians will never oppose evil and stand for righteousness if they think they must always be 'turning the other cheek' and in Jesus' ministry his example was to always speak truthfully "anything other than Yes or No is a lie". I know you know all this and so much more Mike, and you can't cover everything within the time constraints of each episode so I was hoping you could expand in this for us, or maybe point me to an episode where you already have. I subscribed because I'm a big David Wood fan. He roasts people he loves and respects, and he roasts you constantly. If you have his approval you have mine. I subscribed and I am starting with Christology because that's what I'm studying right now.

Boaz had to go to court, if you want to call it that, early in the morning because that's when the Elders of the town met at the gate to make decisions. I think that's an indication that the that the nighttime Court was illegal.
Mike I agree with you 99 and 44 100% of the time but not always. Keep preaching the word rightly divided because we need to know the truth and we need to sometimes know the truth but see a good defense and backup for the truth.

You say it's healthy to give our guilt to Jesus... But if we stop condemning ourselves and give our guilt to Christ, how can we really be repentant of our sins?
Constant self condemnation allows me to repent. If I don't constantly condemn myself, then I become prideful. Self hatred will allow me to stay in relationship with Christ.

Nice job. I like your position regarding the term oppression. Even if the term is hijacked and abused by radical leftists, we should not be afraid to use the term in its proper sense, and speak out about it.
Too many these days get their terms and concepts from those who merely wish to deconstruct and raze everything down to the ground, and then they read those terms back into Scripture, thereby poisoning the whole Christian discourse with marxism and anti-Christian foolishness. And STILL we cannot ignore things like oppression, justice and even social justice (Though that term is almost completely infested with greed and immorality these days).
You can feed all the hungry; educate the poor; bring clean water to those who lack it; and still you will be demonized, because even if your works were good, you didn't suck up enough to this or that sexual minority group. Which makes you not only a bigot and a homophobe, but also an oppressor.
When these political nihilists kidnap and pervert words, we still need to have the courage to speak up - and take back their true meaning.

I think it is kind of funny that you would mention that there are regional accents in England, but failed to mention how different American accents are. As a Canadian we can hear the changes of accent from region to region. The words, phrases, and intonations are very different from east to west and north to south. Canada also has a variety of accents especially in the east. Just thought that I would mention it.

Ppl usually mention the UK because its well known that our accents change particularly rapidly as you travel through an area whereas in America accents change but over much greater distances. (My favourite US accent is Bostonian, or Georgia, love it.) It makes it easier to pinpoint where ppl are from to a more accurate degree here. Obviously all countries have regional accents. I saw a documentary once explaining why it was so pronounced in the UK but I forget why now. 😄

Mike! on 44:49. The greek word in the LXX Job uses is pass by παρελθη, that same verb, though conjugated differently is used when Yaweh passes by Moses in Exodus 34 and when he passes by Elijah in 1 kings 19. Read Mark 6:48 very carefully (in case you're wondering, IT IS the same Greek word, haha).

Allegorizing scripture to "create" promises that don't actually exist is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves amongst modern Christianity. Doing so makes their teaching false because allegorical interpretation doesn't establish doctrine/truth, i.e. false doctrine and teaching are easily derived this way. It in many instances only works to cause discouragement to those that believe it. Allegorizing does not teach real sound Biblical doctrine for believers to become grounded so they can actually defend their faith with the real truth of God's Word and avoid false teachers and their teachings.
