Dr Gabor Maté: When the Body Says No - Days of Leon Lojk 2022

  • Dr Gabor Maté explains the effects of the mind-body connection on stress and disease. Drawing on scientific research and decades of experience as a practising physician, he explains the effect of the mind-body link on illness and health and the role that stress plays in an array of common diseases. He promotes learning and healing, providing transformative insights into how disease can be the body’s way of saying no to what the mind cannot or will not acknowledge. Such understanding implies the purposefulness of human behaviour. Since we understand the human organism as a closed-loop system and behaviour as the indivisible whole of the internal process of acting, thinking, feeling and physiological processes that are intertwined and indivisible and characterised by creativity, we consider the idea of mind-body very close to our approach. Both concepts (mind-body and total behaviour) underscore the indivisibility of the mental and physical, meaning that the concepts of behaviour and organism are equal.
Dr Gabor Maté is a retired physician who, after 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience, worked for over a decade in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness. The bestselling author of four books published in over thirty languages, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, Gabor is an internationally renowned speaker highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, childhood development, and the relationship of stress and illness. For his groundbreaking medical work and writing, he has been awarded the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian distinction, and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver.
The lecture was held as part of Days of Leon Lojk, a professional meeting organised every year in October by the European Institute for Reality Therapy. www.dnevileonalojka.si/
Leon Lojk (1937 -2014) was a Slovenian Psychologist and Psychotherapist who brought Reality Therapy to Europe and laid the ground for it to be recognised as a scientifically sound psychotherapeutic approach. He was the first president of the European Association for Reality Therapy (EART) and the founder of the European Institute for Reality Therapy.

I healed my epileptic seizures through changing my vocabulary. Learning to love myself. Ending the battlefield in my head.

That’s awesome Patricia, I believe lots of illnesses can be. Western medicine needs to integrate the knowledge of the mind body connection. 🫶🏻 I know that my teenage Niece’s epilepsy stems from fear in her childhood and that she can be free of it. x

I had pustule psoriasis on my feet & hands. But I didn't know what it was. It drove me crazy with itch & pealing. After mths of having this, I was sent to a dermatologist. She took one look at my hands & feet an said "What trauma event happened to you that caused this" I broke down & cried. She nailed it, today I keep my stress level low & I remove myself from anywhere that doesn't serve me or stresses me out. Dr Mate is amazing, he nails it. 💜🕊💛 I NEEDED TO SAY NO at that time to an abusive relationship. I do say NO alot more now.

In an ideal world, doctors would connect mind and body when treating patients. But we all know we don't live in an ideal world, and the more people on the planet, the less likely this will ever happen unless you are paying big money to see someone who does connect the two, and who can afford that? Doctors go for the quick fix in a bottle of pills off you go, "Next patient!" I am lucky if I get more than 4 minutes of my G.P.'s time. He starts by saying as you walk into the room, "You have 5 minutes," and he gives you 3 or 4.
I love this talk, but I feel it's a pipedream for most of us, so illness, disease, stress, and anxiety continue.

As always bravo for Dr Mate's insight, especially at the end on the validation, and that on the unconscious choice.
I guess the take awsy is we all *can* be more curious about our assumptions, standards we hold so dear (moral or immoral, that's a deep one) and expectations on "others".
The world is getting smaller and crowded by the day regardless, if one still wants to just hold onto their own belief system, and judging other's, well, the consequences are pressing onto one all the more.
Evety force will have a counter force. There's no winner in this zero sum power game. Just look around in the world now.
Profound self-reflection and identification of one's source of resistance, is far easier said than done.
Look *deep* into one's own shadow (programmed by one's culture) before pointing fingers on others, as that's the birth place for true acceptance of differences and perhaps, ultimately, reconciliation.
There's no other convenient, diplomatic way.

All doctors that I have met only talk about the problem like pain in my back, not asking anything with family issues. Same as for my parents and family. They don't ask anything. They might get taught but never practice it.

@ 04:14 - If only Aristotle had listened to Socrates, then the English language might not STILL be lumbered with such an entirely inadequate logic system e.g. use of 'same' [in 'all' respects] where common usage is to ignore the part in brackets. Since then NON Newtonian science has proven that 'same' in 'all' respects does NOT exist anywhere in the known universe! - It therefore follows that any statement based on use of 'same' is, by definition FALSE -TO-FACTS ! However it's OK to talk in terms of similar or degrees of similarity. - HTH?
