  • The Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) was the first public railway intended for steam locomotive use, operating across north east England from 1825 to 1863. The S&DR’s first line connected coal mines at Shildon in County Durham to Darlington.
From the first day of operation steam trains were used to haul coal wagons. Passengers travelled by horse and carriage until 1833 when the service switched to steam.

The S&D started at Witton Park Colliery, Near Bishop Auckland and linked collieries there as well as Shildon. This guy didn’t have a clue as to what he was talking about.

At least he didn't say, as Dan Snow did in his series "Locomotion", that the S&D was built "to take coal from the collieries of Darlington to Stockton!
THE COLLIERIES OF DARLINGTON!!! There aren't any. Never were.🤣🤣🤣

Born in Manchester I lived in Stockton from a toddler to the end of my teens. I went back during the 150 year celebrations for a visit but I hear the council have no plans for the 200th. I don't know who the "Historian" is but he sounds lacking in accuracy from what I learned over the years. I've seen many better descriptions of the Opening Day too.
