That's my first time seeing lands get played. I was pretty impressed.
It is impressive!
If you're interested in more, there is a lot of decent footage on the SCG Tour. It's not quite as well edited, but if you're interested it's worth checking out.
Lmao i thought you meant the card type, not the arcetype
My LGS used to have 100% proxy legacy tournaments and I got to play a $3000 deck for the cost of ink and paper. I saw the decklist and I was like "36 lands? yes please." Most fun I've ever had playing constructed Magic.
But he missed 2 tabernacle triggers on his own creatures
Mengu plays so cleanly it’s crazy. That’s why he one of the best players
I like how Carl said Marit Lage differently every single time.
God, I love Lands so much. Maybe someday I'll sell a kidney to get myself a Tabernacle.
Whouahahaha
In game 1 for some reason i thought it was the funniest thing ever how carl slammed his cards onto the table when he said he would keep his 7
Channel is very high quality in production that I want you guys to do more legacy
We would play more legacy except we are not experts in that format and feel like we would be cheating the viewers if we played it. But we do have a blast every time we do!
@@CardmarketMagic It's never too late to learn! You guys have...Karmacrow! to provide the cards. It is an amazing format and it still would be fun to watch the stumbles on the journey to become experts at it. Im sure the comments section would point out misplays and sequencing and lines of plays for you guys. That happens even in Andrea's channel and hes an expert
@@CardmarketMagic I would love to watch you guys play Legacy, even if it's not perfect gameplay!
@@CardmarketMagic yes! more legacy please!
You could have played glacial chasm in that last turn, or you could have popped the two artifact lands to reduce the token's power enough to survive
@11:55, howdy, L2 here. The player whose card is being looked at does get to know what card was seen. Weirdly, there is no CR nor gatherer ruling to support this, but the player does get to know which card they show.
*in the weird situation this happens in multi-player, the card is still not revealed and only the player looking and the player who owns the card which is being seen get to know which card was selected.
I love 8Cast a lot. 🐢 really put the deck over the top.
It's so good!
Usually I am not interested in Legacy. But with this setup and with these players I am.
Let's go :D
I would be really scared to play with such expensive cards.
@@hermelin12 Every riffle shuffle costs you about 100€ in card quality!
Here is a really fun pauper deck that got me second at fnm. The whole point is to use feed from the real to combo off with axebane guardian to gain infinite mana and do damage with some cards such as bloodrite invoker and cards that let you venture into the dungeon.

I played lands for a couple years and I love the deck so much, any time I see it being played I'll watch
Wow its amazing how he keeps going home to stream and then go back to the ck studio to record vids
What a wizard
It's all the #menguccicuisine , it helps him run really fast 🍝
The opals are like 350$ a piece, beautiful inventions

The bird!
Lands is such a cool deck but too expensive for me. Might start building 8Cast though, looks like a fun artifacts matter deck.
Have fun buying LED
@@jewski6852 most decks don’t run LED
@@jewski6852 What version of 8Cast plays LED? Its pretty much only played in ANT/TES and doomsday as far as legacy is concerned.
@@joyfulwaffle7094 Narset Echo and Bomberman also run LED.
Agreed, Nussbert. I'd build Lands if I were rich, but I'm angling to slap The Cure together instead.
Would really love to see you guys play the Jeskai Pryomancer Ascension modern deck!
Have you got a list to send us?
This is fantastic content! My wish for next deck would be a modern deck with elvish reclaimer and/or titania
Thank you! Have you got a list to propose us?
Love the legacy content, watched this one a few times at this point! If you guys want another I'd love Doomsday v Jeskai Control. It also just so happens that one of the most famous Doomsday players, Kai Sawatari recently moved to Germany. Just putting that out there.
It's great that those legacy cards are so expensive because they are so little fun to play against lmao
fun watching legacy decks go head to head when you aren't having to play them tho
I have some terrible, traumatic memories
The second I saw glacial chasm I was like yesssss. Eon hub is a good thing with glacial chasm, thought it was in the deck for a moment.
great content as always!
Thank you!
Whoa! A legacy video! I like It!
Man, GORGEOUS Decks
"This does not feel fun for me either", he says with a giant smile...
Ya know every time I watch vids on Legacy or other older formats for MTG I am suprised by the deck prices. Every time.
Exactly. I'd LOVE to get into the formats and esp legacy after these videos and everyday eternal pod, but they're way too out of reach for a normal person. Ridiculous. 8 cast is ~kinda~ possible, but even on low side of price in the format it's a bankroll. Ffs
I never played legacy, but the first hand in match 1, isn't good? You have turn 1 emry with thoughtcast open turn 2
"If you want to plow it, you'll have to pay 4 extra" Things I thought Id never hear again!
Why didn't he play the glacial chasm to slow down the clock?
Grande Andrea è bello vederti qui!!!
Also why not activate thespian stage and turn into dark depths in response to pithing needle?
Great content but the real question no one dares to ask is : does Carl eat crack for breakfast ? ^^
tons of fun!
No clue about legacy but was enjoyable it's pretty different from modern i think ^^'...
pauper reanimator with the LotR landcycle creatures
Did you guys change the lumen settings on the studio lights? They look warmer than before.
No, I just used different color correction settings in premier back then. I've learned not to oversaturate things so much since :)
Great content!
Great comment!
Very cool!
You should play mono black lantern control
Finally legacy my favorite format wish I could play my legacy paper decks still but no one place these days
if it wasn't a price of a car, then maybe more people would've played
I have 4 built but really need to tweak them to be approximately the same power level. 1 can win turn 1 quite easily, others turn 2 or 3 but the T1 is the problem egg ^_^
How does kappa cannoneer trigger itself? As far as I understand, the triggered ability of the card would not come into effect until it is already on the battlefield, meaning it would be too late for it to trigger itself. The triggered ability would have to be taking effect on the stack for that to work, but on the stack it's just a spell and its creature abilities are not yet active. Right? What am I missing here?
It works because kappa say when ever an artifact enters the battlefield.
just bought my taabby, very excited to play lands in paper
Why wasn't the Thespian's Stage being activated, when the Pithing Needle was retrieved?
Because you cannot respond to pithing needle being chosen with the saga. You can only do so after the card is on the battlefield, or before. Activating the stage would have let Andrea fetch a spellbomb and blow up the Marit Lage, effectively blowing up two lands for no reason
30:54 => Can you respond to Pithing Needle ETB trigger by making a Marit Lage with Thespian's Stage ?
I can't respond to it, we checked. The editor cut out the point where I explain that if I do it in response to the search, he gets the eather spellbomb I saw in game 1 and kills it, and then I am down 2 lands. It was better to hope to draw one of my many cards that kill the needle ;)
Ah, it was a search from the saga, he didn't cast the needle.
Unfortunately, no.
Pithing Needle isn't an ETB trigger that can be responded to. Triggers use "when", "whenever", or "at", such as "When a creature enters the battlefield" or "At the beginning of the upkeep".
Pithing Needle's ability "As Pithing Needle enters the battlefield, choose a card name" is a static ability generating a replacement effect modifying how Pithing Needle enters. There is never a moment where Pithing Needle is on the battlefield and doesn't have a card named.
Players do not get priority during the resolution of the Urza's Saga chapter ability. The only opportunity to respond would be with the Urza's Saga chapter ability on the stack, before Pithing Needle is put on the battlefield and a card is named.
Sauce: I'm a level 2 judge
113.3c. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as "[Trigger condition], [effect]," and include (and usually begin with) the word "when," "whenever," or "at." Whenever the trigger event occurs, the ability is put on the stack the next time a player would receive priority and stays there until it's countered, it resolves, or it otherwise leaves the stack. See rule 603, "Handling Triggered Abilities."
603.6d. Some permanents have text that reads "[This permanent] enters the battlefield with . . . ," "As [this permanent] enters the battlefield . . . ," "[This permanent] enters the battlefield as . . . ," or "[This permanent] enters the battlefield tapped." Such text is a static ability--not a triggered ability--whose effect occurs as part of the event that puts the permanent onto the battlefield.
@@tomikvrona1681 Noone cares though. If they wanted the card to work that way, they should have worded it correctly.
As it stands, "when" is synonymous with "as" in this context, so you are able to respond.
@@michaelbohm5160 Incorrect. "When" has specific rules meaning in Magic, indicating that it's a triggered ability. "As" also has a specific rules meaning in this context, making it a static ability that generates a replacement effect.
If a player wants to respond to Urza's Saga's 3rd chapter ability, that player has to respond before that ability resolves. As that chapter ability is resolving, if the controller chooses Pithing Needle, other players do not get priority to respond before Pithing Needle enters.
You can play it differently in your play group if you want to, but that's how the rules work.

Thankfully this didn't age very well!
Woot. GAMEPLAY!!!
Mengu is the greatest person and we want to see him every day
Hey, i'am a little late to the party, but maybe someone got an answer for me :) What Version of "The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale" is carl using? I've never seen a "night" one with a moon on it.
It's an alter. It was made many years ago :) all the moxes as well as the karakas are also altered
@@CardmarketMagic yeah, i noticed the different versions of the moxes right after my comment :) thanks for the fast response, great Video :)
In the last game couldn't carl play glacial chasm and survive a while?
9:33 i think playing the tabernacle was much worse than bog there, the emry doesnt do much with an empty graveyard and with the wasteland lock there was very little chance of Andrea doing much of anything for the rest of the game
maybe i shoulda watched a whole turncycle later when u just did that anyways huh
I'm confused why you didn't play the Glacial Chasm would have gotten you 1-2 more turns.
At 14 life, and with a thespian stage, glacial chasm could have bought 6 turns. Play it, pay 2, pay 4, copy with stage, pay 2, pay 4. Imagine getting to draw 5 extra cards to find a life from the loam, grudge, blast zone, etc
When Andrea needled why didn't the other guy copied at instant speed Dark Depths? I'm on the phone I can't see the lands but I think he has two mana.
Indeed, however he brought the Pithing Needle with Urza's Saga last ability. In order to copy Dark Depths, he would need to do it before the saga's final ability resolved and, if he did that, then Andrea would just bring a Spellbomb to bounce Marit Lage.
@@Izlr88 Yeah, I see now! Well I didn't even noticed that fact...
Doesn’t matter much cause u did have mana, but you didn’t pay the upkeep cost for the 20/20 both times
No need to. It's indestructible ;) and Tabernacle does not make you sacrifice, it destroys
You two look like brothers
do you also watch the legacy pit guys? :)
No but we will now!
Legacy scares me 😳
Why did Carl stop dredging his wasteland in game 1? Did he just feel bad for Andrea? He had enough mana to cast it every turn while also putting the 20/20 into the field.
Carl played a land then life from the loam then played the wasteland and sacced it is that not two land drops?
There is an exploration on the table 👍
Isn’t Mengu one of the owners of crow or am I wrong?
No thoralf is. Andrea is a Pro Magic player and our friend :)
Maybe 8cast won, but the land deck looks so much fun to play.
It truly is :)
Late but how could Carl play Thespian’s Stage and Wastelands in the same turn G1?
Because he cast exploration, an enchantment that let's you play two lands per turn 👍
@@CardmarketMagic Missed that, thank you!
im pretty sure you could blow up the cappa with the boseiju because ward only counters the spell if it's not painful, but it's not actually a spell
Ward says spell or ability ;)
Question was asked 3 times but never got answered @carl why didn't you play your Glacial Chasm on game 3 to survive more turns ??
I usually don't answer because I don't feel like going to watch a game that is 2 years old 😅 if I had it in hand and chose not to play it, there is likely a good reason. If you give me a time stamp, I can go watch only that moment and explain it to you :)
@@CardmarketMagicThank you for your reply. 3rd game at the minute 30:21 we discover that you had a Glacial Chasm in hand since few turns and you never played it the turns before or after. Playing it would have prevented you to take the damages from the construct.
At 14 life, and with a thespian stage, glacial chasm could have bought 6 turns. Play it, pay 2, pay 4, copy with stage, pay 2, pay 4. Imagine getting to draw 5 extra cards to find a life from the loam, grudge, blast zone, etc
I guess we'll never know :-)
at 31:00 wouldn't it have been better to thespian stage in response to pithing needle?
You cannot. As soon as the pitching needle is tutored, you can no longer respond to its naming something. As I recall, I explain this in the video :)
@@CardmarketMagic ah yes, in the video you say that you have outs, the specific of chapter 3 of urzas saga and pithing needles wording "As it enters the battlefield name a card" make it so the earliest you can respond with thespian stage's non-mana ability is before chapter 3 resolves.
I believed it was a when it enters trigger, which would allow you time. My bad.
Thespian stage-dark depth combo in response to pithing needle was great I think...
Actually, I was waiting for this to happen
He cannot, cause then he can seach for spell bomb and bounce marit
The host didn't pay 1 for their marit lage token from their own tabernacle.
Tabernacle does not make players sacrifice the creature, it destroys the creature if the turn player doesn't pay the cost. And since good ol Marit Lagrange is indestructible, it cannot be destroyed. Old cards are funny like that.
lands is just so dependent on exploration and life of the loam but good other than that
Not now
And now Kappa Cannoneer is coming to Modern.....
Why does Carl get to play two lands each turn in game 1?
The card Explore was in play :) allowing me to play an additional land per turn
I'm not positive, and I know they're brand new when this came out, but it's seem a lot like a miss read on the type for urza's saga.
Which is an enchantment not an artifact
Can you provide a timestamp for what you're talking about? It's *very* possibly that you caught something that I missed...
I only saw urza's saga in game 1 and game 3.. In game 1 enough artifacts are out when it is used.
I assume you're talking about game 3 - are you maybe missing the 'Seat of Synod' artifact land? (30:20 ish) He's paying the tabernacle tax specifically to keep his construct token (which urza's saga made earlier) alive, so that it, the mox opal, and the seat of synod together give 3 artifacts.
Or maybe you're talking about his little speech about his second hand at the start of game 3? (27:05). In which case he says that on turn 2 urza's saga can *create* a construct (through it's level 2 ability). 'Of course the mox opal is active' is referring to the other artifacts in play at that (hypothetical) point - Lotus petal, Urza's bauble, soul guide lantern etc... Which is what later happens... Turn 1 urza's saga, soul-guide lantern (1), urza's bauble (0), mox opal (0) = 3 artifacts, mox opal ready to go.
@@xxxxSylphxxxx oh geez. If I'm in the comment section then it means I'm probably pretty drunk and I just don't remember what this is in reference to.
I think you were right about it being his rant though not an actual miss play in which case he probably did mean the construct token it makes not the actual saga
Also I love Andrea and he definitely knows his MTG, I'm pretty dang good at drafting now from watching his channel. But I've seen him make mistakes on new cards plenty and absolutely everyone got the card type wrong on urza's saga because IT'S URZA why would urza be in the name if it's not urza himself or an artifact
But like I said I was probably drinking and could easily have misread the situation
@@billbbaggins3974 I know what you're saying about "being in the comments" haha!
I've never heard of people mistaking sagas for artifacts, nor legendary creatures (like Urza) before. ~They're [edit-historic, not legendary like I originally typed] enchantments, and I think it's been pretty clear among players... The confusion here is almost certainly because urza's saga (an enchantment) can produce an artifact on its second tick.
(More likely, it came from a failure to recognise that seat of the Synod is an artifact land).
Anyway, the accusations of misplays in these comments are all wrong. The most confusing are (for me) the 'as pithing needle enters the battlefield', given how different that is from 'WHEN pithing needle enters the battlefield', despite sounding linguistically like the same thing.
Still, there were no misplays in this video, but TONS of comments claiming the opposite.
@@xxxxSylphxxxxSure, but that's not what I said though.
I was making a lore based point that it is odd that you would find his name on a card that IS NOT himself or an artifact. And besides the name, the art style looks like an artifact and is the only enchantment land ever.
You are in fact the first person I talked to on the matter that didn't at least say that they had to do a double take after first reading it.
Also, all sagas are definitely not legendary. Interestingly I'm pretty sure no saga's are, but certainly not any that have seen any play.
Funny I initially thought it was an artifact and you said legendary but sagas are odd enough that wotc made a new special subgroup because they're more to do with artifacts and legendaries than enchantments
@@xxxxSylphxxxx you were right. I was drunk. The thing I thought happened never happened. It was the seat. No saga even on board.
VEEDEEO TIME!
yeah ok, just play a deck, more expensive than everything I own, combined, that combos into "yeah how about you dont get to play anymore"
ok jokes aside, this vid was awsome.
He forgot to pay for the tabernacle/ marit Lage in First round, even though there was plenty of Mana!!!
You don't need to pay for Marit Lage :) it's great! Tabernacle destroys the token, but the token is indestructible so nothing happens

Biggest lie ever
@24:30 why didnt he just play the second sai than the mox opal to get exactly lethal..
sai is legendary
In game 1 Carl missed his tabernacle trigger and should have lost his marit lage 😂
Luckily, Tabernacle destroys instead of making you sacrifice, and Marit Lage is indestructible ;) it's a very common Legacy Lands interaction
24:22 Can't he play another Sai, Master Thopterist and then play Mox Opal (+1) generating 2 tokens (+2) 8 + 3 = 12 Lethal?
sai is legendary
Very late but Tabernacle is sacrifice, not destroy
It's been errata'd to destroy 👍 it's a common legacy interaction :)
Love the paber gameplay! After seeing commander players make all these nonsensical plays it was very satisfying seeing such a clean game.
It's a shame, how many of these comments are full of 'corrections' to their play, but every single comment has been wrong so far. (The one about 'when vs as something enters the battlefield' was particularly funny how, even when corrected by a judge, a commenter still tried to argue that the video + judge were wrong (and I was lucky enough to have learned this 'AS pithing needle enters' one years ago when it hit my fetch land and I tried to crack in response! Judge said I can't do that, and I HAD to learn why (reason - AS pithing needle enters)! So I know the judge+this video is correct).
I read every comment claiming mistakes in this video, and they all tend to miss something... Marit lage being indestructible when tabernacle destroys; "As" vs "When" something enters the battlefield; 3 artifacts for mox opal include seat of synod land etc.
You should mention a specific mistake you saw. The ONLY mistake I saw was Carl thinking that he wasn't supposed to know which card from his hand that Andrea randomly saw. But Andrea knew that he DID have to know, and made sure he revealed it. Ergo, nothing against the rules was done, no plays there were less than ideal, carl just misunderstood something and Andrea 'fixed' it in the moment (albeit more politely than most players do their correction!).
@@xxxxSylphxxxx I think this comment was more about their gameplay video in general. They even often comment on their own mistakes but for this one I don't remember what the misplay was and I'm to lazy to watch the entire video again
@@Kristjan0209 Shame you don't want to watch it again. It was played flawlessly, and the comments claiming that it was not are all (ironically) making mistakes.
@@xxxxSylphxxxx I'm pretty sure whatever the misplay was it was a minor one. I know it wasn't the needle play became l learned about that a long time ago. It might have been the urza's bauble thing but whatever. Since I don't care if I'm wrong or not let me do a little edit
@@Kristjan0209 there might well have been a sub-optimal play somewhere... There's no way I'd know the best plays in legacy games!
Not activating stage there was generally painful to watch
Can't be activated in response to the pitching needle as it is searched with Urza's saga. So it would have had to be activated in response to the search, at which point Andrea would have easily just tutored aether spellbomb and bounced Marit Lage. Activating stage would definitely have been the wrong play 😉
The lands deck should have won game 3. If you did the thespian stage + dark deeps combo in response to the third urza’s saga chapter counter.
Other than that good job playing lands.
You cannot. As you cannot respond to what Andrea gets :) I think I explain this in the video. If I trigger it in response, he gets aether spellbomb and I just lose on the spot 👍
@@CardmarketMagic most 8 cast deck run 1 Aether spell bomb in the 75. Also he already used it to draw a blue card to force of negation the ancient grudge. Otawara Soaring City that discards to bounce a permanent was the only other answer, and that was already in play. So again due to process of elimination you should have won against 8 cast.
You correct you can’t respond to the search, but to the third counter trigger.
Example: main phase 1 third counter on saga float colorless mana. Then search.
@@reidf10 He had not used the spellbomb you can rewatch the video :P
@@CardmarketMagic may bad that card was soul-guide lantern. Then you still wanted him to get spellbomb over pithing needle long term. Instead of the the combo. Copy urza because if he still got needle he would have to name urza’s saga instead of thespian stage. You have to think long term not short term.
Pithing needle shuts down the lands deck in this case. You also had glacial clasm as protection. Again you missed played and it cost you it happens.
You didn’t know the match up and your opponent knew it. Then proceeded to take advantage with that information.
At the very least when I’m wrong I apologize for the mistake. What I don’t do is to continue to make excuses for my failures.
