  • Sticky button clean up. Today I'm cleaning up the soft touch plastics in the interior of my Jaguar XJL. These surfaces tend to get sticky over time as they get exposed to UV and heat, but cleaning them up is a quick and easy DIY project! This is common in Mercedes, Jaguar, Maserati, Ferrari and many others.

Beware once you remove the soft touch in some cases the actual black paint that's underneath gets exposed to scratches (the ones a nail can do). I wouldn't recommend other than 70% alcohol in most modern cars, because in most cases the plastic it's actually red or white, so if you go too far with this, you'll leave the button blank.

Hey Ryan, I'm about to do this on my Jag XJ - however I'm worried about the long term effects of using alcohol. Since you did this in march 2021, have the results still been good or are the white bits chipping off? Please do let me know, as some assurance prior to me doing this would be great!

Good question. I have had zero long term effects. It removed only the sticky material. I would just agitate lightly. From what I’ve heard what removes the white is people scrubbing too hard. Good luck.

Seems all the exotics have the same problem! You would think they'd come up with a button surface like the simple domestic cars have!!
Doesn't the alcohol hurt the leather?
