- Can you make money woodworking with a CNC in a garage workshop?
I have a theory I want to try and prove with this CNC video series. If a CNC can help make money woodworking, it would be like having an extra employee in the woodworking shop. Adding a CNC to the wood shop is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I appreciate Carbide 3D for sending me the Shapeoko 4 XXL to try out and see if I can produce woodworking projects that sell with a CNC.

Bought my Shapeoko last yr and just got it assembled about 2 months ago. Been a challenge but love working with it.
Matt congratulations. I have had a CNC for about 5 years. The best tip I can give you is that it's cheaper to buy used furniture for solid wood. I usually buy tables for a decent price and cut them up into smaller pieces for signs. The wood is also dry as can be. Less chance of it warping after you run it on the CNC.

We’ve had our Shapeoko Pro XXL for a couple of months now and have learned a lot. I can totally relate to your enthusiasm and joy with the success of your canary wood tray. Looks like a lot of fun. I almost bought a shaper hand held. Lots of up front money. I didn't because of the programming. If I could find a way to program easy might reconsider.

You ABSOLUTELY can, I bought a Chinese 6040 several years ago, (of course had to rebuild the control system and Bed on it) probably had $3000 total in it, But a good accurate machine now. I have been cutting aluminum Plates with it for couple years now for a customer, made over $30,000 last year alone, Setting up 2 more 6090s now to cut wood products in near future, CNC is a GAME CHANGER in your Biz.

Hey man, over the last several months I've been doing/learning some CNC stuff myself (Shapeoko XXL). A few thing's I've learned that has seemed to help is add a secondary waste board so you don't cut through the original, and surface/flatten your waste board so it is registered to your router. Also the flatter the material the better results you will have!

Nice to see someone else using some Odie’s Oil. Recently bought some (oil, butter, dark oil, solvent and cleaner) myself. All of them are great! Thinking about getting some more of the dark stuff though.

Just found your videos and have subscribed. A little tip, instead of double sided tape.. the masking tape and ca glue trick works great! Put masking tape down on the work surface and on the back of the work piece. CA glue on the top of one and activator on the other, place them together. No slip and no glue residue from the double sided tape. Keep the videos coming, we're only limited by our imagination!
One little power tip as well is to use painters tape on the table and the bottom of the work and then CA glue them together. after I found this out I stopped buying expensive double sided tape. Hold amazingly well as you can guesstimate where small cutouts will be and make sure that area has lots of glue, thus holding them from shooting across the shop.
Hey bud, look into the elliptical style clamps. They clamp on the sides of the board into a solid end stop that you setup. I have several for my xcarve, and it has saved me bits and hold downs using them. I am currently awaiting an upgrade and we will be back up and milling by the end of the month hopefully. Congrats on your new journey, also will have to share my son and I's new mallets after we finish them.

That thing is sweet. I can't wait to see more. Have your thought about doing the inside first? That way when you cut out the outside, you don't have to worry about it moving. Just an idea. Love the video.
Yeah that would work much better. If I knew how to tell it to do that lol. Still learning.
What I do for mine is set it up as 2 separate projects: one to hollow out the insides, a second to cut it loose from the material. I find this works well because I can use a bigger bit, usually, to hollow out and then swap to a smaller bit for the cutout. I use Easel Pro, so it's super easy to make the complete project in one file, make a copy of that file, and then delete the cut you don't need from the two files.
@@731Woodworks Play with Carbide Create and Carbide Motion. Create allows you to move the tool paths around each other for this issue. Also make sure that you save, save save as you design.

I purchased a Shapeoko 3 XL last January. Finally put it together in March and posted a video of it performing the "Hello World" G Code on my Facebook page and have been making money ever since. Requests were coming in faster than I could handle. After a month I purchased the XL to XXL upgrade package. My initial Shapeoko investment was paid off by September.

Personalized inlay cutting boards sell really well, should give them a shot with the CNC.
The process is so much faster and easier
Try using painter's tape and super glue/accelerator as work holding it's the best stock holding method when clamps cant be used.

Instead of double sided tape, use blue painters tape. Tape the tape down to the spoil board then tape the exact same pattern on your workpiece. Then put super glue between the prices of tape. Hold like crazy and cleans up super easy.

Don't know if anyone recommended it or not but CA glue and blue paintets tape is the best clamp system I gave used on my X-carve and I no longer use tabs. Plenty of videos if you want to look into it. Love the content, cant wait to see where you take this..

congrats. Keep crunching numbers and letting us know. It's a great resource of your tools and makes great content since a lot of wood work stuff is not quantitative right away for payback etc. Also that 2 hours with wire chasing, now the machine can buy that back =). It would be cool for all us following for you to share weekly sales P/L remaining debt for that 2500, and we can get excited real time with something your trying to figure out. Food for thought. The once monthly may get lost in the shuffle or at least be forgotten about, until the next month comes up.

Power Tip I've learned.... If you can make an X,Y axis corner positioner out of some scrap/MDF and counter sink some screws into your spoil-board. You now have a perfect square reference for mass producing whatever. Plus is can act as a side holding clamp too for one side.

+1, take it one step further and align this corner stop with one of the rapid position presets in Carbide Motion. That way you have a repeatable automatic xy zero. I have my corner stop screwed down, but plan to make an indexed bracket that drops in on the zero just when I need it.

Have you tried spray adhesive... idk if it would gum up your sander after you pull it off the cnc. Just a thought.
I just run a 90 vee bit around the edges before cutting out (my way of creating chamfer).

The only issue I see with that CNC is how much room it takes up in your garage shop. You may have to take over the dining room table for the CNC so you have your shop space back.

Hey! I am thinking of purchasing a Shapeoko 4XXL. I've been on the fence due to noise level. Would it be too loud for a townhome garage? Would I be likely to get noise complaints due to this machine?
I'd be interested in a follow-up video in 6 and 12 months. Would be interesting to see some more long term durability/profitability.

Peculiar how you got a CNC in your shop before a router table. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great deal, and you’ll probably get more done with that than a router table. I will definitely look forward to seeing what you do with it.

I use Amazon for my bits, the prices aren't horrible for what you use them for (straight cut router bits, ball mills) I'll kick you a message for other places to find patterns for programs.

How long did the canary take to cut? If you had a process down, roughly how many do you think you could produce in a 8 hr day?? Awesome video.
Thank you. It took about an hour but it was going very slow. I could raise the speed a lot from where it was set in software. I think I could knock out 10 or 12 easily.
How hard was it to learn how to program the cnc I got a buddy that got a big one that does 4x8 sheets and he’s never used it was thinking if it is easy to learn I could help him get it up and running
It’s not “easy” but it’s not hard either. Of course I still haven’t learned enough to say I’m proficient at it either

Wood you recommend getting the compact router that they offer to go with the shapeoko or upgraded
I had one of theirs fail. They replaced the other one no questions asked. I do think it was my fault on the failure. I ran it at full speed the entire time and more than once I programmed the CNC wrong and it plugged into the aluminum bed under the MDF waste board. Which I think actually burned up the router. I've got a Makita on standby now just in case but the replacement has worked great with no issues.
How green was the solid timber you used and would that dish bend over time in bathroom

I've never used a laser engraver. They look really cool. You can actually attach a laser to this CNC

It's fairly loud. I wear hearing protection while it's running. Took about an hour for the tray, but I could probably speed it up

I reached out to several. Carbide3D was the only one willing to send me one to use. I did look into several. Laguna makes a good one but much more expensive.
