Who else drive the W124 in 2020? Still going strong with my 1990 230E, 30 years and still counting, btw I was born in 1990 same month as my mercedes!

I’m actually thinking of getting a w124 for my college years. I want a car that is reliable and because I’ll have to come visit my parents once a while and it’s at least a 3-4 hour drive plus, the roads here are terrible, I want a car that is also a bit more comfortable than the mitsubishi I currently have. And because the mitsu should sell for around what a decently maintained w124 would cost, I thought it could be a great replacement for the car. What I’m concerned with though, is the cost maintenance. Can you tell us if it is costly to maintain? Or even better, is it easy to work on ‘cause I think it would be fun fixing my own stuff and it would help me cut down on expenses. Cheers!
P.S. Labour here is cheap! (ofc, it is it’s Thailand.) The parts, I have no idea of.

Had a 1995 E300 diesel. Drove until 240,000 miles. Solid as a rock and no rattles or squeaks the day I sold it. Felt incredibly solid.

You do not sell W124 if you have it from new.
Mercedes should go back to its 80s design and quality. The simple designs have aged gracefully.

Apparently if Mercedes engineered and spent as much on development on the current E as they did on the W124, it would start at €85,000!!!

@@jackreacher9452 Don't agree. Already in 1995, with the arrival of the W210, the decline in quality and integrity of engineering began. Oh well, even the W202, launched in 1993, was not as well built as the 190E (which is why I have been driving a 1992 190E as a daily driver for over 8 years now!)

Ich kaufe morgen (wenns klappt) nen ´85 oder ´86er W124 250D mit 420.000km. Währe nach zwei Opel Astra F´s (´93er und ´94 Facelift-Mischmasch) seit letztem März eine echte Abwechslung. Leø he means that a true Mercedes has numbers before the letter for example 300E or 500SEL and not E350 or S500. The first E Class came out in 1993 and it was a facelifted W124.

Тут стоит понимать что разработки дорогие, но они остались и в след. моделях, поэтому не правильно говорить что 210 хуже, а новое вапще говно, разработки отбили себя, поэтому и нет таких влржений. Меняется только обёртка.

I was a a Young Boy and my Neighbour drove an 230E it was 1985 and he was so Quit .Another Cars at the Time wäre really loud and not so Comfortable! The Eycatcher for me was the Glascleaner with one Arm!

Ich hab mir mit 16 meinen gekauft und bin zu 100% zufrieden mit dem Auto. Ist ein '93er 220E und ich würde ihn sofort wieder kaufen. Hab sogar ein Video auf meinem Kanal von dem Auto.

Almost 40 years later, the W124 and W201 are still commom here in Portugal. However, almost all of them are imported. The national ones are a little bit rare.

As usual, a lot of people comment about how superior the quality of these older Mercedes cars supposedly was and all that sentimental stuff. Few seem to want to remember that it was especially this series, the W 124, that really damaged the Mercedes reputation for quality. In fact, in Germany, where traditionally most taxi cabs are Mercedes Diesels (precisely because of their legendary durability and economy), taxi drivers staged protest rallies in Stuttgart to draw nationwide attention to the quality problems of their new W 124 cars and the inadequate way Mercedes Benz addressed them.These vehicles had a host of quality issues, from electrical gremlins to suspension problems. Most famously, the cars had a tendency to develop driveline lash and buck like a wild horse at a rodeo, a phenomenon soon dubbed "The Bonanza Effect" after the classic 60s Western TV show. In the interest of damping out powertrain vibration and noise, Mercedes had given these cars super soft bushings and mounts which magnified movements in the driveline. Those complex 5-link rear suspensions were notorious for wearing out their bushings prematurely, causing sloppy handling and a noisy ride. Reliability was also not exactly up to previous standards, especially in the versions with high performance engines. The W 124 was a thoroughly modern and technologically advanced car, but it was far from perfect.
I don't deny what you state, but it was still well engineered and I can only assume that the issues were ironed (except for the hopeless wiring insulation on 280 and 320 models of 92 -94 - ask me I know) Generally speaking I think the 124 is well engineered, my SAAB 900 is as well, However the main thing people forget is the massive difference in cost. My w124 estate cost £54000 in 1993 ... this would get you a near top of the range e class today with a lot more gadgets. Something has given somewhere as 1993 money would be closer to £150k today.
that might be so. but I just love the lines of the w124, it's so timeless and beautiful clean design. Quite reliable and easy to maintain compared to newer models. I look and look at the w123's, but the design is just soooo boring compared to the 124. But that's just me. Thanks to all the ones taking care of the 123 classics. I've lucky to own a 124 estate 300 turbo diesel. hope to use it as a daily driver the next 25 years too.

The best car I have ever owned is my current 1981 Mercedes Benz 240d 4 speed manual transmission. I had a 1980 240d with an automatic and survived a side collision with a drunk driver. I found my current car a few months later I have had it going on 4 years.

У меня w124 е200 МКПП 1994 года недавно поменял мотор и компьютер проводки от е220. Этот мерседес для меня не машина а верный друг который ни разу не подвела и я не продам. Хочу топит или строит гонки машина летит меньшим обьемом а если хочу камфорта машина едет плавно при этом наслаждаюсь особенно после работы
