Thank you for another great review! I won't spoil what, but you nearly hit the nail on the head with some of your theorizing.
Oh god, the cow part lol. Like the penguins, the cows are capable of limited "flight." Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have come across right--the cow rig was so complicated, and had to interact with so many other rigs, that the beginning scene took two weeks to complete and still came out subpar. Alas...
