  • When I recently started tinkering with 3D printing it struck me how cool it would be to design something in Virtual Reality and print on my printer. So I challenged myself to learn the basics of the 3D modeling tool Gravity Sketch on the Quest over the weekend in an experiment to produce something tangible. This video briefly describes how it went.
    HARDWARE USED
Virtual Reality headset: Oculus (Meta) Quest 2
    Computer: Mac Book Pro
    3D Printer: Ender 3 Max
    SOFTWARE USED
    3D modeling: Gravity Sketch (www.oculus.com...)
    Slicing: Ultimaker Cura (ultimaker.com/...)
    FILAMENT USED
Pot: Matte Dark Gray PLA from 3D Prima (www.3dprima.com/)
Base: Glossy Golden PLA from 3D Prima (www.3dprima.com/)

Great video! Me & my son have been researching how to get a virtual space to 3D print!

I've been also wanting to do 3D designs and printing. Thanks for this video. Now I'm really hyped to buy everything i need! ❤

With the current tools it is not as smooth as using something like Fusion 360 for parametric modelling, but it is a very compelling use case for VR. We just need better tools before it's a truly viable option.

Are you using Oculus Quest? Do you use a MacBook for VR? If yes, it would be interesting to know the details 🙂

It’s a Quest 2, yes. I do use a Mac Book, but in this case the VR was done natively on the Quest. The Mac was only used to download the 3D model and send to the 3D printer. There is no way to use the Mac for VR in any relevant sense, unfortunately, but only to support the experience, like using virtual desktop to get your Mac screen into VR for instance.

I agree that it's not the highest resolution, but it's a fun experiment. When I want something more high quality I model in Fusion360.

The app I used here is stand-alone on the Quest and doesn’t require a link cable.
