WTF Happened to CATHERINE ZETA-JONES?

  • In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
This week we look back at what happened to one of the biggest rising stars of the 90s and early 2000s, the lovely and talented Catherine Zeta-Jones. After a brief, but memorable appearance in THE PHANTOM, Zeta-Jones made a tremendous splash with 1998's THE MASK OF ZORRO followed by another huge hit, ENTRAPMENT, starring alongside Sean Connery and topped off with THE HAUNTING in 1999. Firmly establishing her "name" in Hollywood, Zeta-Jones went on to star in the moody drug cartel flick TRAFFIC, then reunited with her HIGH FIDELITY co-star John Cusack for AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS before starring in the Oscar-winning CHICAGO alongside Renee Zellweger. She then played alongside George Clooney in The Coen Bros. INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, joined Tom Hanks in Steve Spielberg's THE TERMINAL, before jumping into sequel-land with OCEAN'S TWELVE and THE LEGEND OF ZORRO in 2005. From there, her work gets much more sporadic on the big screen, but her time was needed elsewhere, as her husband, actor Michael Douglas was diagnosed with cancer, which he eventually beat, luckily, and she revealed to the world that she suffered from bipolar disorder. However, her dedication to herself and her family slowed her career and when she finally returned to the big screen the roles seemed to be less than stellar. But, Zeta-Jones is not one to be deterred and has slowly, but surely maintained a presence in Hollywood, even if the opportunities aren't as good as they were two decades prior. For us, Catherine Zeta-Jones has a special place in our movie hearts and we're happy to see her turn up anywhere.

Her career was so frustrating! At the height of her career she got caught up with Michael Douglas and I feel like that hurt her at times. She became obsessed with being his spouse! Every interview she referred to him as “Michael Douglas my husband.” Not to mention she got pregnant to get Michael away from his first wife. I don’t know about this. Was the money worth someone else’s husband and a nervous breakdown? Would not be surprised if these two are faking their marriage especially to conceal Michael did not have enough money for a divorce settlement and didn’t want the embarrassment. @@EricJ0hansson it's not that women roles don't decline faster than men, I know it for sure, but if they're really good, women can still work, even though not as much as when they were under 50, but great actresses that proved to be great even after their 50s are incresing, and they continue to be nominated, at least for Emmys, because TV allows them to work a bit more than cinema. Jessica Lange, Patricia Arquette and Clarkson, Viola Davis, Glenn Close, Emily Watson and Tilda Swinton, Ellen Burstyn (just to name a few) are well over 50 and they continue to work, even if with some difficulties. Glenn Close became known when she was approaching her 40s, and she's one of the best actresses out there. If you're good, you get more variety out of your roles. People should do a "women matter" protest, nonetheless. The over 50 and very underappreciated Emily Watson complained about parts declining for women as they age, nonetheless.

@@antoniettabombardelli8868 You are missing the point. While it has gotten alot better in the last couple of years, two thirds of all speaking roles are written for men. And out of the third written for women most of the roles are written for younger characters. So yes, there are roles for older women too obviously, but the balance is off which is what people are reacting too - especially a decade ago or more when CZJ was active. Men have many more roles in all ages, and their appearance isn't as important (female roles are much more sexualized and show alot more nudity). 10% of the top grossing movies last year had a female lead or co-lead over the age of 45. But like I said, we've seen big improvements in the last couple of years.

She's not the best best actress ever, and there are many younger versions of her waiting around to take her place. It 's how Hollywood works. Is it fair? Of course not. She played Sean Connery's girlsfriend in Entrapment for christ sake! He was old enough to be her grandfather! But guys can still play big roles when they are well into their sixties or seventies and have 30 years younger partners in their movies. Actrices are finished in Hollywood when they reach 40. The only ones still working are Streep, Dench, Mirren. Sad.
