WTF Happened to Sean Penn?

  • Very few personalities in Hollywood are as controversial as Sean Penn. One of the most gifted actors of his generation, Penn’s also been a lightning rod for controversy, with his often antagonistic relationship with the press and sometimes misguided moves, such as his now infamous interview with drug baron El Chapo. Yet, he’s also a noted humanitarian, participating in rescue efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and being a tireless advocate for Haiti following the 2010 Earthquake. He’s also been an outspoken supporter of Ukrainian president Zelensky.
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we look at the scope of Sean Penn’s career. We chart his earlier days as perhaps the most talented young actor to emerge in the early eighties, stealing scenes in Taps and later becoming a star thanks to turns in movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, At Close Range, The Falcon and the Snowman and the controversial Colors. We look at some of his missteps, such as when he became a tabloid fixture during his marriage to Madonna and his disastrous film Shanghai Surprise. In the nineties, Penn, who many thought was washed up, had a tremendous resurgence by taking on character roles in Carlito’s Way, Dead Man Walking and The Game before winning two Best Actor Oscars, first for Mystic River in 2003, then for Milk in 2008. He also became a noted director, having helmed The Crossing Guard, The Pledge, and Into the Wild. However, he also had a few flops in that regard, such as the notorious The Last Face, starring Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem. Recently, Penn has shown up in small roles in movies like Licorice Pizza and on TV in the limited series Gaslight. It seems, for many, his acting career has taken a backseat somewhat in recent years. In this episode of WTF, written (with Mathew Place), narrated, produced and edited by Taylor James Johnson, we dig into his career, future plans and more.
What’s your favorite Sean Penn role? Let us know in the comments.

I've come to just accept some actors/celebrities aren't going to be perfect characters in real life. They have to go through crazy hoops and loops to get to a place where we appreciate their art of acting. Sometimes its directly related to their personal lives or they have to enter some kind of mental state that only some of the greats can control. Sean Penn definitely falls into that file for me.

    • @davestang5454

Penn did not need to behave like he did in real life to become a good actor. NO actor does. People need to stop treating actors like gods or royalty. Penn's "skill" is no better and no more difficult to attain than thousands of other job skills.

Nothing happened…. He’s happy and doing what he wants…. He has waaaay more money than any of us… yea. Wtf happened, huh? 😂 Btw?? Sean IS gangster! He’s a bad ass!

I think Penn has been hellbent on making people forget that he’s Spicoli. Well guess what Sean it won’t work. 200 years from now you’ll only be remembered as Spicoli

Despite me not agreeing with his political leanings you have to respect the man for riding into disaster areas and hands on helping. Way better then those assholes making posts about thoughts and vibes for the people. And yes I have spent time doing disaster relief and the areas you go to can be anarchy

I don't know where you're getting your information but Hugo Chavez was NOT a dictator. Not by any stretch of the imagination. He's still beloved today by a huge majority of Venezuela.

@@paolodeangelis00 I don't think it was just Fox. He was demonized by almost all American media. A good rule of thumb when trying to figure out if a country's leader is bad or not is to ask the impoverished people of said country what they think about them. If they're liked by the people living in poverty, you can bet they'll be scapegoated in American media and are actually probably decent leaders. Castro is another good example of this.
