Iraqi Forces Take Back al-Nuri Mosque

- West Mosul, Iraq - As Iraqi military recaptured the al-Nuri Mosque Thursday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory in the long fight against ISIS. Retaking the mosque was symbolically important - ISIS used the site to declare a so-called caliphate in 2014 - and Iraqi forces have fought a grueling battle to claw back lost territory in the three years since.
VICE News' Ben Anderson has been following the Iraqi Army’s painstaking fight against the terror group, as they trying to cut the route between two of ISIS’s last remaining positions in west Mosul: the al-Jamhuri Hospital, which gives ISIS snipers a huge military advantage, and the old city, where most of the remaining fighters are hiding among civilians as they take their brutal last stand.

The Iraqi government soldiers are more competent and professional than any other arab fighters I’ve seen, the gunner was in complete control of his weapon, he fired bursts instead of spraying blindly. The soldier who fired his M16 down the alley was using his sights and laying down accurate, steady, semi-auto fire. Amazing, I wish the Afghan forces were this good!

Yes, the US put SOME effort into improving the Iraqi army but all of that went to waste because of the Iraqi government that was created by the US. If the US has taken time to think about rebuilding the country after invading ISIS wouldn't have happened. And what you are saying is not true. US did NOT invade Iraq to create a democratic thriving state, the us invited Iraq because they didn't like how Iraq was becoming powerful and they saw Iraq's expansion as Germany's expansion before WW2. The main points I'm saying is 1) the US did not invade Iraq to improve the country or freedom of Iraqi people 2) The us did not know how to build the country after invading that is why the war cost 2 trillion dollars 3) Iraq hasn't been improving in the last decades because of the IRAQI government that was created by the US 4) YES the US tried to improve the Iraqi army but they didn't train the full army, only a fraction have been trained probably. I am a soldier in the Iraqi Special Forces. I belong to the Golden Division ranked 4 globally. 2 Arabs. I participated in the street war that took place at the time of the fall of the former regime. He is Saddam Hussein at the time of 2004 Against the American forces that occupied my country at that time. I was trained by the American forces in Jordan and participated in the Mosul war in 2014 for 4 years and purified my country from the occupier So, do not underestimate, but Iraqis. The surprising part is that the 9th AD is supposed to be in tanks and armored vehicles. They soon learned that they could not bring their vehicles into areas like these so they adapted and became infantry!

@Jordan Spencer They won't do it because they use them as a dirty bait, they strap them with IEDs and with different types of explosive, and they strap the whole place around them with explosive, and they probably have a sniper in the distance to watch them enter the building, they also might rig a car with cell phone explosive, so it's pretty much difficult to save them.
They do sometimes actually manage to save them, but other times, it is just catastrophic.
If one thing you can get out of the army with, is that you can't save all of the lives, you have to sacrifice sometimes
