- This was our first constitution day here in Norway and the first celebration they have had since the pandemic.  We had such a fun day watching all of the parades. I loved seeing all of the traditional dresses of the Norwegian women. I also love that the country has upheld the formality of the day despite some progression to casualness around the world. Maybe next year the kids will have the energy to hangout even longer.
Also ... apart from the Kings guards ... this is a none military parade, its all about celebrating our future, the kids... 🙂 thats why its often refered to Barnetog (Childrens parade) or Folketoget (Peoples parade) the folketoget is usually coming after the childrens parade.
The King's Guards, HMKG, is not in Stavenger. The local recruit training base, KNM Harald Haarfagre and the Veteran's asosciation, NVIO, used to participate in the Citizen's Parade, but was not political correct....
As for the "russetog", it used to be filled up with politic satire, but obviously isn't anymore. We have 40 years anniversary next year. I went to St. Svithun....

@@drSvensen Tvert i mot Det bare hyggelig at andre feirer sammen med oss, gjerne med eget flagg eller nasjonaldrakt. Antar du er i mot skotter med kilt på 17. mai, også....
@@Lassisvulgaris Ja jeg er absolutt mot skotter i kilt på 17. mai også. Jeg blir glad når jeg ser en innvandrer i bunad med norsk flagg, og tror ikke helt på at det er noen som irriterer seg over det (kjenner folk langt mer ekstreme enn meg som har samme holdning). Andre flagg på 17. mai, samme om det er Danmark, Tyskland, Somalia eller Palestina gjør meg rett og slett rasende. Til helvette med alle som har ett annet flagg på nasjonaldagen i Norge.
Tog have a double meaning in Norwegian .. it can mean Train as in the transportation type, or Parade ... the correct english word here would be Parade 🙂 just like Slange in Norwegian also is a double meaning word, it can mean Hose .. or snake ... so Gardensnake just sounds weird in english 😛
The Red and Blue dresses are Russ ... (no not Russians) but yeah ... weird they party out before the examn ... haha.

Only ever been in Stavanger twice, but seeing the 17th of May there, makes me want to be there for it once.
It was a fun experience. I love that it is considered the people’s day.
Everybody visiting Stavanger likes it.....
You should go to Oslo one year for Constitution Day, to wave at the King and Queen!😊

Whew, all the marching bands giving me anxiety flashbacks to weeks of marching practice leading up to 17th of Mai as a kid. That was exhausting, I tell ya.
I can imagine! My legs were tired from the day from standing and waking everywhere.

We do not have a military parade of the Constitution Day. We do have a Children's Parade.
It is a day for the people, from my understanding.

I can't remember much from my time as a Russ back in 1998.. I was more or less drunk for a month. 🤣😂 You have to be 18 to drink beers, whines ol alkopops.
"Russetid" is to celebrate that you're finished with 3 years of the norweigian equivalent of High school. Only. You aren't finished. Not really. The exams are AFTER a month of drinking......
Definitely a unique tradition!

How long time did the kids use to adjust to Norwegian language ?
They are still in the process. They go to a private, English speaking school. They are taking Norwegian and learning though. Kids who wish to enter in the public system start at a school that focuses on helping them understand and speak the language so they can quickly get into the local school.

Well.
Since we can drink, legally, from the age of 18 - or that is purchase alcohol (drink we actually got no lower limit on).
When you are done with high school, (year 13 of school) you go on a 1.5 month "bender".
Definitely an interesting tradition!
Yeah, basically Norwegian society (supported by schools, the month prior to finals/graduating) is teaching and encouraging their 18 y kids to binge drink for a month preparing for adulthood. Once graduated they will be fully prepared to join the adult society binge drinking every weekend.
