    This is really a special song, and hearing it live, especially the bridge section, is incredibly hypnotic and cathartic. A lot of the production choices, the moments of key change, and several other items you noted have a LOT to do with the lyrical message, sonic narrative, emotional story being expressed. Agreed about the live vs studio version. As well as this live version was recorded, it simply cannot capture the energy and intensity of being there in person (which was undoubtedly orders of magnitude more impact than the live recording is).

    A lot of professional criticism I've read of Aenima has also called out what I've read described as anaemic or claustrophobic production as a problem they had with it. It is a bit jarring at first, but listening through the album as a whole, that sort of muddy centre-panned production becomes the sort of baseline sound of the album, making the moments where they deviate from it (either by playing around with things moving through the stereo spectrum, or by dropping in some extra guitar tracks panned way out to the sides to make the sound much fuller, as they do twice in "Pushit") really jump out of the speakers at you. Listening to one song in isolation kind of disrupts that effect.
    EDIT: The album version has always been one of my favourite Tool tracks. I love how simple and direct it is compared to much of their music - I wish they spent more time exploring emotional themes more simply like they do on tracks like this, "Jimmy", and "H" compared to the more, well, meandering prog of their newer material. I do agree to some extent that the extended percussion section in the bridge kind of feels tacked-on, but I always get over trying to compare it on a purely musical level to the album track because I try to imagine what it would have been like to be in that emotional, entranced state in the crowd, watching Danny and Aloke Dutta jam together on stage. Noodly stuff is always easier to appreciate in a live setting. I think their peak moment of folding the jammy world music stuff into the Tool sound in a really coherent way is the Holy Trinity on Lateralus.

    For me the last note transports exhaustion, kind of a disappointed relief. It a perfect fit to the slow building, the back and forth and the short burn till the end. Like pushing the last energy out in the final breath of what could have been, realising the finish line.

    I really want to check out more Tool. I have only really listened to a few songs. I read a comment here that they are more of an album band and I always get a sense that I’m missing something. I like the songs I have heard. They just don’t grab me the way they did when I first heard them in the early 90s. I feel like they are worth digging into. Maybe they will grow on me 🤷‍♀️

    I *love* this song. This (and Jimmy) is the song that taught me to love Tool. Much of that has to do with Maynard's singing, of course...I love how he soars in this track. But I also really appreciate the constrained and minimalist nature of the music throughout this track. It works thematically and just appeals to me aesthetically, as well. I do like the studio better than the live track. Particularly Maynard's vocals, which always a major part of my enjoyment of any Tool song.

    This has gotta be one of my favorite Tool songs. And I’ve been listening to them for decades.
    The feeling you got and the description you gave is what they want you to feel with those lyrics.

  • @mikelbentube
    @mikelbentube Před 8 měsíci +3

    If you're struggling to enjoy them, i would say that maybe it's because tool is an album band. Maybe doing individual songs limits things. I posted something a while ago regarding pneuma.... exciting for us because it was new....i don't think it was the best suggestion for you. If you want to do an album one day, personally my recommendation would be 1 lateralus, 2 anema, 3 10,000 days. I think the majority of fans would either agree or put anema first. There are definitely some people who would put 10,000 days first...it is a bit more accessible so maybe it would be better for you....i dunno

    Very familiar with the studio version of this since I spent many days immersed in the Tool's first three albums when I got into them. It's not one of my favorite Tool tracks, but like most of their songs it does work better in the context of the album. I do really dig the "psychedelic" section of the song, especially when the guitar emerges into that echo/delayed-drenched riff. FWIW, I've never been a huge fan of the production on this album in general, certainly not compared to Lateralus or 10K Days or their latest. It definitely has a very unique sound, but too much of the album sounds incredibly boxy, as if it was recorded in mono. The live version I haven't heard as much, but they definitely take the song in a very different direction, emphasizing the atmospheric and (dare I say) the emotional elements more than structural elements of the original. Tough to say which I prefer, but Danny's drumming in the live version is certainly very yummy.

    As much as I enjoy most of your takes on different songs on your channel, I disagree with you on some of what you said about the reimagined track. To me, the new ideas and sounds introduced in the song as well as the 'meandering bridge' actually kept me more engaged in the song and added much more emotional value to it. I don't even like most of Fear Inoculum Tracks but this one to me doesn't sound like 'noodling', it speaks to me in many different ways. Anyway, in the end I think it's a matter of taste :p, have a good day.

    If you want to hear the less cerebral side of Tool, listen to anything from Undertow (maybe not Disgustipated though). I personally love their later stuff and am one of the people that tend to put them on a pedestal for it. But Undertow is still my second favorite album of theirs, exactly because of the stark contrast it gives to their later work. The album is much more down to earth and more directly driven by personal emotions than what came after it. I'm not sure I would call it relaxed though. :D

    Spending an hour meandering on trying to define what an artist 'should' be doing to satisfy the specific notes/melodies/production choices/structures that fit your preferences is ridiculous. Half the time you're trying to define what/who is tool from your own narrow perspective which is the opposite of what Tool is and the opposite of art. I can sum it up in a couple sentences. You can't put art in a box. You seem to prefer surface level rock and progressive tool isn't for you - cool. Move on with the negativity over something you don't connect with. Virtually nothing you assumed about who / what Tool is or what you think they're trying to do made any sense and came across like a desperate attempt to explain why its their fault you're not connecting with their music. I don't know much more about why they made this art any more than you do but you don't need to try to explain it. Its ok - its not for you and nobody needs to hear it. Leaving this comment for your 'exposure'. I guess the channel name gave it away.

      Hey jordan, this is the "reaction" genre and as such I assume people come to my video expecting to hear my initial thoughts about media. This doesn't sound like the Tool I was expecting and thus my initial thoughts were about their width and range. "[B]ut you don't need to try to explain it." But see, I kinda do since that's what my audience wants. The whole channel is about me attempting to break down and analyze music; to find those musical ideas that support a larger narrative/idea and expose them. Sometimes I get it, other times I don't. It's a niche format, for sure. Thanks for giving the channel a chance though and I appreciate the "comment for exposure."
