  • Remember the old days, when the best way to share music with your friends was the mix tape? Forget playlists, compilation albums and algorithms picking music - this has the Jim touch!
This one comes from Brian. He says:
While I like a lot of your other reactions I'm partial to Tool and miss seeing you doing them although you have done a lot. I often go back and watch your old Tool reactions and I enjoy them immensely because they're genuine, most reactions for tool I don't believe are genuine, with you I know they are and that's why I have always liked all your reactions you're not trying to bullshit anybody. Thanks again. I'm looking forward to it.

Tool's 'You Lied' is masterclass plain and simple...It's just incredible! The nuances and dynamics throughout that composition are unmatched.

"You Lied" is a cover, it's by the band "Peach" who were the opening act for TooL during the European legs of the Undertow tour......the bass player for Peach was "Justin Chancellor"...as things were coming apart with Paul D'Amour it was suggested they should talk to this Justin fellow......and the rest is Tool history....and I am very grateful it happened as I believe Chancellor is the glue that allows Carey, Jones & MJK to fly all over the place!!!!

Interesting track choices though. Definitely more obscure than most of their songs on the reaction scene.

Hello there my friend! Happy new year buddy, hope you enjoy this. It's been a loooooong time since we had any Tool on the channel. I don't mind obscure, in fact I relish it! I think I've probably done all the usual suspects....

@@JimNewstead Just got done watching. Great reaction, as always!
The original version of Pushit is much more aggressive than the Salival version. The payoff part at the end is a pretty close match to how the original is throughout. I love both versions but prefer the original.
What I like about Salival is it's a pretty clear bridge between their younger aggressive music and who they were becoming. They play around with empty space and tempo a lot more in the albums after Aenima.
On a side note; I'd always assumed you were familiar with their catalog by now, or I'd have suggested some long ago!

"Salival" is an awesome EP for a comfy chair in a dark room with your poison of choice. "No Quarter" is stellar!

Happy new year Tim! What a great way to start the year off. Tool’s cover of Peach’s “You Lied” is an absolute fave. Justin Chancellor was in Peach first and apparently Adam Jones was a big fan. Tool and Peach toured together, absolutely loved Justin’s playing style, and the rest is history. Salival is one of my treasured Tool releases. It’s so brilliant. The live version of Pushit with MJK singing it in a different key brings tears every time. Beautiful. Love this review 🔥👏👏🔥

Hey Jim, if you want to hear Maynard speak I highly suggest checking out his episode of WTF with Marc Maron. Probably his best interview/podcast. He's also been on Rogan's show a number of times. You lied is a cover of Peach, which was Justin's previous band. Happy New Year and all the best.🥃

Tool have to be the most important metal band over the past 30 years and probably shade it over Dream Theater as the most important prog-metal band even though they sound nothing like each other. This is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated but there can't be many listening here, surely?

    • @rudolfbecker4313
      @rudolfbecker4313 Před 7 měsíci

Hi Ken, do you think that are more newer bands influenced by Tool than Dream Theater ? Speaking for Germany, I can easily list bands like Vandenplas, Dreamscape or Thoughts Factory, all influenced by Dream Theater, but I can't think of any which sounds like influenced by Tool.
So what's your experience on the other side of the channel ? 🤔

When I listen to or talk about Tool, I'm always ambivalent. Yes, they make great music, but I can't listen to it too often and for me their records are too long - as most of nowadays records - coming from the LP generation I think 35 - 45 minutes is the perfect length and a live LP may be a double one .
But there are other things, that disturb me ... and I don't mind discussing it. First of all, I've read so many comments, where fans write about Tool as if they were Gods and they don't listen to any thing else. BORING 😆 I also dislike comments calling Tool the best .... I don't get tired writing, there is no best in music, it's just a question of taste; also comments about Danny Carey - a great drummer - as if only he plays great drums. BULLSHIT.
Another thing I didn't like was their sales strategy of Fear Inocolum - only 1 version when it was new ... for 80 euros - no thank you - who needs all the stuff included?
And up to today I haven't seen a regular CD release with a reasonable price ... sorry, but that's a ripp off for me ... but I don't have to buy it, right ?
And what I dislike most, is the intolerance of many Tool fans, when they criticize other bands to sound similar to Tool, as if that's not allowed. I know
many bands that are influenced by Dream Theater, but I cannot remember any comment saying "you are not allowed to sound like them ... or all you do is copy".
Ok, having said all that I finish my comment saying that I liked this mixtape ... even though I like LZ's No Quarter better 🤘

    Good evening Jim,
Tool…mmm… I have problems with Tool. Until now I simply cannot listen to them. The singer’s voice gives me the creeps.
I’ll try again now but will quit if I get uncomfortable again.
His voice has a metallic undertone and that tone isn’t stable. 😵‍💫
Sorry, I quit Tool for now.
A perfect circle. This is better. Great voice when the singer sings a bit louder. Do I like the song…not really. Don’t know the Led Zeppelin cover version.
