you're walking along the street and you come across this. How, how ever, can you just carry along on your merry way? Why are so many people untouched by real beauty?
After some years in the art and media industry I have come to realize that people can't tell the difference between quality and commercial junk. It all floats together to them. - Unless someone knows a tiny bit about music they couldn't say if this was good or normal. Some would even say it was noise.
fjaurler Sorry buddy, but you are wrong. There is no such thing as good music. Music is, and always be, 100% subjective. Someone calling this absolute trash is just as right as the person calling this the greatest piece of music ever created. It is why music exists in so many shapes and forms. Learn to love what you love and keep quite when some don't agree with, what is essentially, your opinion.

Many things are objectively "good" or high quality when it comes to productions; e.g. a skill, a production process, etc. People's "taste" is a completely different matter. People can like whatever they want for all I care.
An acquired (or born) skill run through a high quality production is objectively better than something thrown together without thought or meaning, run through an auto-tune.
If 99% of people like the latter, then that simply means they have hit upon something that connects with people. Either by luck or an acquired skill. In either case the point remains.
A big chunk of popular products today are a combinations of those. Usually a skilled songwriter writes music that connects, a producer run it through a developed process which includes a person with a well designed image and acceptable skill.
Learn to argue what is being said, or ask what is being meant, don't invent positions.
fjaurler Who's to say that this piece wasn't just thrown together in a couple hours? It can be argued that, with so much on the line ( especially with the big names in the music industry) it is more "skillfull" to produce what you call "commercial trash", which consistently sells millions of units. A person well versed in music/guitar theory will be eager to point out all the wild techniques and feats of virtuosity being displayed here by Estes but none are allowed to say that the music itself is objectively better. How could anyone? A car can be measured to be objectively faster than another, but how do you measure the level of beauty in music? Your comment "people can't tell the difference between quality and commercial junk" implies that some music is of greater value than others. Sorry if i came across as rude in my last comment and for the record, I absolutely love "The Song of The Golden Dragon" and would much rather listen to this than I would a Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber song (still, I cant say this song is objectively better than a song by either one of these "commercial trash" artists).
alex nordlund Much as I appreciate your intentions in being objective, I disagree. There is obviously a lot of music that is simple and still very beautiful. It's not because he's a virtuoso that his music is beautiful. It's because he's honest and genuine. The problem with 'commercial junk' is that it is rarely spontaneous, but instead manufactured and packaged to a formula. It's like advertising, which, despite being clever sometimes, is fundamentally flawed, because it is produced for the purpose of gain. Not for its intrinsic value. That's my penny's worth.

Estas's sense of feel and ability to conjure so many tones, textures and dynamics from his guitar is nothing short of spectacular. You can tell this is a man who has a special and deep connection to his chosen instrument.
Agreed! It's very hard to see such a good performance, with so many connection between the musician and it's instrument.
