      Rev limiter protects the engine not the governor. The governor is mom and dad it controls your speed and makes sure it’s baby doesn’t go to fast to get hurt. It’s 100% installed for golf courses to control speeding that’s it.

    Hi Kevin I appreciate your professionalism /attitude towards doing things the right way instead of what makes things easy or a hack fix! I work on golf carts at a golf course I have many that will only start w/ pedal half way depressed (fully depressed pedal you get nothing) and everyone jumps in his pedal to floor & complains it won't start/ run. How do I fix this issue? Also I've purchase the starter / gen belts (club car & aftermarket) they are all now slightly thinner than the older belts!? Have you noticed this where can I buy ones like the originals?

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  Před 2 lety +2

      If its cold, the engines will need a little choke to get going. If its hard starting all the time, even when warmed up, I would start with disassembly and cleaning of the carb. Also check fuel flow from the pump. Make sure the fuel lines aren't stiff. This can cause vacuum leaks and weak or no flow. Club Car has multiple part numbers for their different years and belts. I would make sure the belts are for that year. Some of the belts are only for a 2 year range, some are for the newer 96+. I would stay away from Amazon for hard parts like that. Everythingcarts or buggiesunlimited are good sites to buy from. They both sell RHOX parts and I'm also a RHOX dealer but I don't sell online anymore.

      It sounds like one of the cables has broken somewhere inside the sheath. If you pull the cable from one end and the other end does not move, the cable is broken and needs to be replaced. If the cable is hard to pull or does not move easily, its time to replace it.

      To my knowledge, all gas Club Cars have a service switch like this. Most, if not all, newer golf carts have a Tow/Run/Maintenance switch or mechanism, whether gas or electric. Some gas carts do not have this feature as they have a "neutral" position on the shifter.

    i am going to do a full service on this cart prior to making any adjustments to make sure nothing is left on the table. i saw you said conventional 10w30...can i run synthetic? i am probably gonna run a high end oil filter, and k&n air filter to help protect and squeeze out everything i can. any recommendations are greatly appreciated...great vid, and a sub for you sir.

    I have a 95 ds. The starter motor went bad. I did a field test, it failed. I want to replace it with an after market part because I cant afford OEM. How do I find what type of starter to purchase? Some people say clockwise and some counter clockwise. I "think" it's a Kawasaki motor. I have the s.n. but that's it. Can you help me out here?

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  Před 5 lety +1

      The 95 DS uses Counter-clockwise rotation and 96+ is clockwise. If its a clockwise engine, it will be printed in bold black letters on a yellow arrow above the primary clutch "CLOCKWISE". To determine the year, look at the serial number. The first 2 numbers after the letters are the last two numbers in the year. For example, AQ0869-59555 is a 2008 Club Car DS or Precedent. This isn't a real serial, just random numbers. You can order the bi-directional starter/generator from me MOT-2005. It can be wired for either clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation.

      If it starts and runs after the engine cools, it sounds like you may need to replace the ignition coil and igniter. The igniter is built into the coil. Make sure the oil is not overfilled. Overfilling can cause issues with the crankcase vent that runs the fuel pump. remove the fuel line from the carb when the cart stops running and see if you still have fuel flow. It wont pump out fast but if there's no flow, then the pump is failing.

    The cart has a rev limiter, you don’t need a governor. The governor is put in just for golf courses to keep your speed slow on the course. The rev limiter will keep you from damaging your engine not the governor. Loosen the bolt and let that Governor spin freely and bypass it all together. Again, a governor has no other purpose than to regulate your speed. Bypassing it or doing any mods isn’t going to hurt your engine. Make sure your rev limiter is working and go have fun.

    I am going to replace both of the throttle cables(from box to back and governor cable) - this helps a bunch. My question though is around the rev limiter - doesn't the rev limiter keep the rpms down so the engine doesn't disintegrate? I thought the governor just regulated the speed? So with this particular cart, isn't the risk a safety issue? Keeping the cart from speeding? TIA.

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  Před 3 lety

      The rev limited does exactly what the name implies, it limits the RPMs. Its only design is to protect the engine. I cuts off the ignition if the RPMs get too high and re-enables ignition when the RPMs drop. It basically shorts the ignition coil to ground. In a failure situation, this is permanent or more frequent. These engines will grenade themselves if they over-rev. The governor only governs the speed of the transaxle. It does this by regulating the throttle position.

    • @cmalbertosub
      @cmalbertosub Před 3 lety

      @@Kevinsgolfcarts Thanks for the confirmation. After just checking, I am not even sure my rev limiter is kicking in. • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  Před 3 lety

      Someone may have cut the ground wire off the rev limiter. Check your serial number to confirm the year before you order one. They are slightly different between generations. The first 2 numbers after the beginning letters are the last 2 digits of the year. The serial number should be located on the floor just below the steering column.

    I’m having a similar issue with my 2007 club car DS gas cart. It back fires every once in a while but the main issue is when I take my foot off the pedal the engine continues to run/idle. It doesn’t accelerate thank god but just keeps a low idle. I have to switch the lever from forward to neutral to make the engine turn off. Any suggestions?

    • @Kevinsgolfcarts
      @Kevinsgolfcarts  Před 2 lety

      Backfiring is usually caused by the throttle cables being out of adjustment or ignition staying on when it shouldn't be. If the engine is continuing to run when you release the accelerator pedal, you have issues with the wiring, micro switches or accelerator rod adjustment. You can google the wiring diagram for your cart to make sure all of the wires on the micro switches are in the correct positions. There are 2 switches on the shifter and 2 switches in the black control box where the solenoid is located. One of these switches on the shifter is for the reverse buzzer so its not part of the start/run/stop circuits. I've had so many carts with the wires on the wrong terminals of these switches. If the wiring is correct, then one or more of these switches is bad and should be replaced. I would just replace the 3 used in the start/run/stop circuits. You can also test the switches with an Ohm meter to verify they work. Diagrams for these switches can also be found with a quick google search. The accelerator rod (comes from the accelerator pedal and goes into the control box to rotate the throttle cam) may be out of adjustment causing the stop circuit switch to not close. This is the most rare but it does happen. These engines have a magneto style ignition (ignition coil fired by magnet on the flywheel, similar to a push mower engine). The ignition coil is shorted to ground to "kill" spark. Your cart isn't shorting the ignition to ground.

      Sorry, I'm still not sure what you mean. There is no way to manually release or engage the clutch in a regular golf cart. Golf carts engage the clutch after the engine starts and gets up to speed.

    Multi million dollar idea for someone. Figure out a way to get more tork and speed out of these small engines !!! I have a 2003 Club Car that will only do 14 miles per hour. I want 25 to 28mph out of her. I'm looking at new rear end gears and a heavy duty spring kit for the clutch. Installing a tachometer (in a perfect world rev limiter will allow 3900 rpm) and 12" wheels and 23" tires.

      You can gain torque and RPMs with heavy engine mods like tune cam shaft, port polish, springs, etc. Its not a new idea. People have been doing that to lawn mower engines for years.

    In your professional opinion what is the safest way to make a club car ds gas faster without damaging it? Is there a proper way to get another 4-5mph out of it? Mine feels like a little girl in a Barbie jeep is going to pass me lol

      Bypass the governor all together. A governor is put on to control speed, not to keep you from damaging your engine. Now it can be used for that if it’s the only option installed. Golf carts have rev limiters. Rev limiters cut out at the top safe rpm for the engine. So in other words it will not allow you to hurt your engine. So you don’t need a governor and a rev limiter you only need one or the other. So why do golf carts have governor’s? To control speed on a golf course. That’s it! The governor being bad or bypassed will not hurt your engine. The only way you will hurt your engine is if your rev limiter gives out and usually when that happens you will have a no start condition.
