💣 The primary goal of the hospital isn’t to make sure your breastfeeding journey goes great.
Sure, sometimes it’s more of a priority than others. There will be nurses willing to help. Sometimes there might even be a lactation consultant on staff that you can see once or twice.
I don’t believe anyone in the hospital is purposely trying to make breastfeeding more difficult.
But usually it’s not the priority. And sadly, sometimes policy (and preferences) can actually set you up for problems from the start. I’m not joking when I say many of my postpartum visits are spent fixing things that started in the hospital.
The best way to combat this? Preparing before birth. It may not prevent every problem, but you’ll be far better equipped to know what’s normal, what’s not, and how to advocate for yourself.
That’s why I created Fuss-Free First Year - unique program designed to take you from pregnancy through weaning (including talking about the most common issues I see arising in a hospital setting).
