The envoy is Philip C. Habib (1920-1992), worked 30 years as a diplomat, special envoy, and ambassador -- a great man who negotiated many cease-fires, and was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1982. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Habib
paul swantek Try John Ringo's "Kildar" series of novels. In "A Deeper Blue" mike Harmon drops into Florida, riding a Lynx Chopper through a high grade storm. It's blasting out "The Envoy" as it comes in.
"We parachute in! We parachute out!" A good part of Zevon's œuvre would make a great Cold War/'80ies action flick. Thompson gunning, Lebanese negotiations, and mercenaries extracting by skylift.
This one was inspired by a real person by the name of Phillip Habib. But Warren's extremely varied repertoire is so refreshingly atypical of musical performers of any decade. Even his love ballads like "Suzie Lightning" or "Angel Dressed In Black" don't indulge in whiny complaints about all the ungrateful women who betrayed his trust. Or do I digress?
Zevon absolutely had some songs of that sort (French Inhaler, Empty Hearted Town), but that isn't always a bad thing. It's a very human thing to let out your frustrations every now and then.
Zevon: That rare mix of (a) musical, (b) poetic and (c) crazy. His output never grows old. Even less acclaimed records like Mutineer are worth a listen. "Poisonous Lookalike, you're not my girl/ Poisonous lookalike, what have you done with her?" What man hasn't had that thought before??
MY GOLDEN GOD, WARREN ZEVON, WOULD BE *SAVAGE* ABOUT BIDEN AND HARRIS.... I LOVE THIS SONG...THAT DEEP, VELVET-GRAVEL VOICE WARMS ME IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES. MY "ENVOY OF ROCK N ROLL" WARREN-BY GOD-ZEVON!!

Everytime I hear this fantastic tune by Mr Zevon I can't help but think it is the main song from an unmade spy movie.

In fairness there was always wrong on at least both sides with Warren :-)
