Oh my god, the way Alvin had the fans second guessing if SOS is about his drug addiction or his sexuality was a master level of song writing.
I remember Simon getting up on stage to perform "Don't Stop Believing". He'd just been diagnosed as HIV+. For a moment, giving their fans every last little bit of vitality that they had left, I think everyone in that crowd dared to believe that things might actually end up OK. We were so wrong, and so naïve.
Brainrot was an interesting album to say the least. After Simon’s psychotic break in 87, no one was expecting him to ever return after being institutionalized. The stress of having to manage two junkie brothers, practically managing a tour by himself, and trying to make enough money to support his family could be enough to make anyone snap. It was a shock to everyone when they announce the Brainrot reunion tour, although people would come to regret it.
Simon was nowhere near stable enough to be preforming again. Apparently, that fat meth head Theodore was sneaking Simon’s anti-psychotics for himself. Simon’s mental state deteriorated quickly over the course of the tour. My dad was there for the infamous 95 show in Baltimore. Simon had been twitchy the entire set and kept rambling incoherently into the mic. Alvin approached Simon half way through the set. No one knows what words were exchanged but that seemed to trigger something in Simon. The entire venue watched Simon strangle Alvin to death with his own aux cord and the crowd just stood and watched, unsure if it was apart of their set or not. The footage on live leak still haunts me. Seeing the pain and desperation in Alvin’s face as he reached out wordlessly to the audience.
But…some say it was deserved. It wasn’t until recently, but it came to light that there were many domestic abuse calls made when the three lived together. It wouldn’t surprise me or anyone else if the attack stemmed from years of verbal and mental abuse from his narcissistic sociopath brother. The track S.O.S is often theorized to be a call for help written by Simon.
The idea of a live Alvin and the Chipmunks performance smelling like "fur and cheap cartoons" is viscerally unpleasant in a way that I don't have the words to describe.
Sludgefest is my favorite genre
Ok but like, Don't Stop Believin is INCREDIBLY beautiful. Unspeakably so.
unironically amazing
Don't Stop Believing plays like a Munks version of The Beatles' The End. They knew the breakup was imminent, and Alvin I think knew on some level that he wouldn't survive the decade. You can hear Theodore and Simon starting to break out of Alvin's shadow with their solos, and the cameos from their manager (Dave, I think?) and one of the Chipettes really bring it all home. They were saying goodbye. For such a dysfunctional group, it's a remarkably wholesome, uniting moment.
That Don’t Stop Believin’ was an emotional rollercoaster.
THEODORE! WAKE UP! YOU TOOK TOO MUCH TYLENOL! THEODORE?!? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Is that Alvin singing lead on “Cradle of Love”? I know there was a big dispute about who would sing lead on that track in the studio. I know Theodore would sometimes sing lead when Alvin was too drugged out to sing. It does kind of sound like Theodore, but it also sounds too gravely. Theodore had a pretty smooth voice. Did Simon ever sing a track? He’s a damn good backing vocalist so I can imagine when Alvin was too fucked up to sing, Simon and Theodore would have to take over. I don’t know, I was born too late to see them live :(
Don’t Stop Believin is sending me to the edge
Thank you for continuing the sludgefest. I love 16 speed chipmunks in a very normal and responsible way.
So I didn’t know the chipmunks covered “the way” a song based on an elderly couple who’s minds were going that ended up Like 4 states over before driving their car off of a cliff.
Now it’s even more heart wrenching
Right?? the chorus has this hallucinatory glory of them driving down a golden, beautiful road, right into their demise. The heavy horror of "the children woke up, and they couldn't find them" ...where did mom and dad go?? They look frantically, but it's no use, they're trapped in the heavy sludge of inevitability, of decision that were made hours ago, everything seems like it's happening in slow motion but it's still too late. And that bass solo is a thing of dark beauty.
HOLY FUCK this hit me as i read your comment and somehow this version hits harder than the original song. I am crying because these issues run in my family and i miss them who have already found "peace on the road" someway or another. Maybe i will find the golden road someday... i hope. Thanks.
@@ladyvelkor A cop pulled them over for not driving with the lights on and had no idea who they were or that they went missing and let them off with a warning. The cop found them in Arkansas and the missing reports of Lela and Raymond only went out in Texas. They were found by some teenage boys who were on a walk a few days later
I didn't think those chipmunks would actually do the French verse of Hold on Tight.
Good for them.
Hell yeah! So happy Sludgefest is still going!
Alvin Killed Himself Because An Overdose But He Was Alive The Died In A Microwave
don't stop believin...i've transcended...
Makes me so happy to see more sludgefest!!
‘Don’t Stop Believing’ plays over Alvin and his brothers jamming in their hotel room only to fade out and show it’s just Alvin in te he final moments of an overdose. A look of peace settling over his face.
The things the speed did to to the reverb are amazing
The Way sounds heavy as hell, the guitar solo absolutely rips, god damn!
dont stop beleiving is insanely good
Tfw u like this version of Don't Stop Believin' more than the original.
I was high during "Don't Stop Beliveing". IT WAS A HEAVEN
It goes on and o n a n d o n
glad people are still making these
They actually did Cradle of Love… do they know how dirty that song is? Lol I was six dancing to it but if you watch the video, you’ll know how dirty it really was lol
When Alvin sings “Hold onto that feeling..” it’s clear he is referring to chasing the dragon.
😄😆
I enjoy sludgefest in general
Cradle of love was Alvin's denial of his son.
The drums in the way are sickeningly thick
Yall sleeping on SOS
'the smell of fur and cheap cartoooooonsss'
Why did nobody answer my comment on this video?

Cradle of Love, featuring Nick Cave...
The way to existential vibration
Amazing Intro.
39:09 this sequence sounds so emotional to me
"You're The One That I Want " is fire!
stop Believin' 33:07
The first few seconds, are you TRYING to give me nightmares?
Feels weird that they elide all references to drinking but retain "hell" and "damn" across these albums.
lmao you could have told me that Cradle of Love was a Nick Cave song and I would believe you.
Neat
Cradle of Love almost sounds like The Melvins lol
I was getting kind of a Butthole Surfers vibe, especially with the intro
The vocals sound like Buzz imitating Dick Manitoba from The Dictators
@@jimjamauto Which Buzz?? Tim Allen or Patrick Warburton
@@MarthaRoseQuartz The other, other Buzz....Buzz Osborne
@@jimjamauto I heard. Lmao
where on EARTH can i get a downloadable version of this
Everyone is talking about don’t stop believing but not cradle of love
I liked it best😊
Don't Stop Believin' by Jesu
Only so many people know who Jesu is this caught me off guard
i still cant believe sludgemunks blew up again just because theodore said the n word
theodore on the lullaby song sounds like niko lmao
The first song sounds like Buzz Osborne drunk off his ass
I thought you meant Buzz Lightyear hence my other comment
Do you happen to have the individual tracks in flac or mp3?
Sounded like Glen Danzig of the Misfits.
Uh... who drew the cover of the album?
You’re the one that I want is like listening to gay version of Grease. It still sounds like a good rendition of it.
where is this picture from
The back cover of Chipmunk Rock
@@maggie4402 Was it an official album cover? Because damn, does Alvin look like he's on something there.
