The idea of making an original chipmunk songs to sludgeify greatly intrigues me. We could create 16 speed albums from scratch. Very interesting.

Definitely one of the better Chipmunks Sludge albums I've found. Some don't hit the same as the original, but this has the right idea.

Alvin's voice was rough, he was in the studio during bouts of rehab. You can tell by the strain in the vocals.

Sure, Alvin was on drugs but that doesn’t take anything away from the music. Music was in his soul and it pours out in this performance. We were meant to have this song. So many discouraged people are in these comments but Alvin knew what he was doing when he put this song together

Do you take requests, by any chance? There's this one Chipmunks cover called 'Shakedown' (not sure about the original but it's easy enough to find on YT) that I've been hoping somebody will slow back to its original speed because it goes hard as fuck imo

The day Simon found out he was HIV positive was the most animated he'd been in years. He went from being a heroin addled couch potato to a being of pure rage, tearing the recording studio to pieces around him. He kept screaming "I ain't no queen, Alvin! I ain't no fucking queen!" In hindsight it's almost hysterical how he was more concerned with people thinking he was gay than the knowledge that he'd be dead in less than a year. He spread the virus to at least six other women in the following months when they went backstage as groupies. The other Chipmunks are just as responsible for that as he is. Never once did they speak up, they never even tried to make Simon put a rubber on. They just looked the other way.

This brings back memories. I roadied for them late 80s early 90s. Warsaw, Poland in 91 Alvin sang Leader of the Pack laying down and the proceeded to prop his legs up against the drume and pee into his own mouth. I knew the emd was near. Two shows later, the tour was canceled and we had to find our own way back to the states.

Feels weird that they elide all references to drinking but retain "hell" and "damn" across these albums.

I was a roadie for this tour. If anyone ever met Skunky Don, that was me. Alvin would go weeks unable to shit due to his crippling addiction. We would delay shows for hours while Al tried to squeeze one out. Shit was dark. Litterally. I remember eating cereal one afternoon with a spoon that was burnt almost entirely black because there were no other options and thinking, "If I don't get off this tour, I'm going to watch somebody die". I started on the Turtles Coming out of their Shells tour when after they coheadlined a festival in Wichita with us and never looked back. Damn talented, but Alvin and the boys had their demons for sure. I got a lot of stories from that tour!

Unironically, assuming you made this from scratch, this is really good and feels like an actual chipmunk punk song. I tried to 16speed it and it actually sounds pretty good for what amounts to essentially a meme. Would you mind if I uploaded the 16speed version? During this performance, Simon was livid that Alvin refused to play his guitar because he was too drunk to do so. Because of this, they had a backup guitarist on stage playing his parts. After the song, they closed the curtains, and Simon dragged him back stage, beat him up, and yelled at him to get back on stage and play his guitar or he would make sure he "suffers".

I actually saw them open for Hanatarash at the infamous bulldozer show back in ‘85. I’ll never forget the moment when Alvin strapped the chainsaw to his arm and started chasing the audience members around, I barely escaped with my life. one of their best performances imo

Often described by critics as little more than a ‘glorified cover band’, having only produced a scant few hits of their own, Alvin And The Chipmunks - known shortly after their formation and forevermore in infamy as simply: ‘Chipmunkz’ - would go on to become one of the most prominent countercultural hits of the 20th century, even surpassing many of their contemporaries in the process as their success skyrocketed far beyond the expectations of everyone involved in their immediate rise to fame and global stardom and eventual sickening fall from grace which shocked the nation and indeed the entire music industry in perpetuity. “They came to me and they said, ‘We got these three chipmunks here who can really sing, and not just that, they can play, too.’ and I said, ‘Chipmunks? What am I, some kind of fucking zookeeper?’ I wasn’t up for it, not at all.” Hesh Burnham, producer of four of the Chipmunkz’s original album releases stated in an interview for this documentary. He proudly waved his hand over the framed records hanging on the wall of his cramped office, obviously regarding them as the highpoint of his otherwise dull career mostly spent promoting jumped-up Karaoke acts on the Las Vegas strip. “Their guy, the manager, Dave. He said he had these chipmunks so under his thumb that they’d produce hit after hit and their contract would stay a flat-nothing percent as long as his end was met, and what was I supposed to respond with after hearing that initial demo but an emphatic ‘yes’? I mean, c’mon, I was running a business, after all.” And so the three brother act under the simple name of ‘Alvin And The Chipmunks’ went on to perform even better commercially than either their manager Dave or Hesh Burnham could have ever anticipated, instantly topping the US charts with their first professionally produced cover of the Beatles’ ‘All My Loving’, during production of which Alvin was supposedly first introduced to heroin due to the fact that studio recordings were so often filled with “coming and going” drug dealers catering to Dave’s own addiction at the time, who was often so strung out that the chipmunk trio would regularly go without representation for days at a time, costing them numerous deals with potential labels interested in recording their work. As the 1950’s closed their doors on so many acts before them, Alvin And The Chipmunks managed to hold steady in the public consciousness as their musical tone changed along with the times. Where before Alvin’s sound had been firmly in keeping with with his contemporaries like Dion and Elvis, the advent of the 60’s and Alvin’s burgeoning drug problem had paved the way for an entirely new and far grimier approach which would propel the act into the stratosphere of international fame reserved for very few before them, especially for the likes of a ‘glorified cover band’. “I’m sure everybody remembers those iconic snaps of Alvin hanging all over Jim Morrison just before his first hospitalization,” Burnham puffs over his desk. “In fact, I was actually the one who drove him to the OR as he was OD’ing, vomiting all inside my Porsche 911.” Burnham continued, eyes clearly full of many other such memories. “I screech into the ambulance bay, alright, and I drag him out of the passenger side and I’m screaming, ‘This kid’s a star. He’s a fuckin’ god! Somebody help us!’, and within the space of a minute a crew bounds over with a stretcher and everything and scoops him up, it being LA and all…” Following Alvin’s involuntary psychiatric hold, he was back in the studio almost immediately under Dave’s intense observation, who was, it was later revealed following his death, involved in serious crimes involving drug trafficking and distribution of child pornography. It is speculated by many historians that Dave captured and shared indecent images of all three chipmunks throughout their adolescence, continuing well into their artistic careers. Charges were never brought up against Dave Seville. In fact, these accusatory claims wouldn’t be spoken of openly until a year after his death, just under a decade following the death of his ‘son’, Alvin Seville. It is reported that numerous journalistic agencies, - some of which were considered as “widely influential at the time” - were actively discouraged from sharing these details following “quickly squashed” claims from other reported victims of Dave’s sexual abuse coming mostly from a number of women involved in the production of the chipmunks’ many hits. Like the decade previous, one of the chipmunks’ covers quickly caught hold of listeners of the time and young audiences flocked to see them perform live. Talk show hosts referred to them favorably as ‘the furry Beatles’ while other more conservative speakers in the public discourse referred to them with disdain as “amoral rats” among other such derisions. Regardless of their tenuous image, ever fluctuating to accommodate Alvin’s frequent outbursts, the covers they produced were received almost universally by fans and critics alike as a fascinating avant garde representation of the decade and the attitudes therein. Little did anybody know through the madness of that ineffable 60’s fervor that Alvin’s spiral into the hell which would grow to consume him had only just begun to manifest.

RIP Alvin, you were a true visionary all the way to the end.

I cant believe some of the stuff Alvin did. I remember seeing photos of Alvins girlfriend sitting in that alley way motionless while everyone walked by. I believed theodore suffered the most the album was pushed back because theodore was in the ER hooked on pain killers. No one knew how to wait back then and i think they lost a couple of fans who didnt know the story. Alvin was depressed when he killed himself in that microwave. Ill never forget when the news came out

Ah yes, the famous cartel record, alvin was pulled out bus by gun point because the leader's kid was a fan. They were 19 at the time, the trio was bought into a dark room told to give 100 percent. Theo was crying simon powered on as they were trying to sober up.

Alvin was always a disturbed one.

Oh man, I remember these guys! I went to see these guys in the summer of ‘86. I was exploring some new genres of music and decided to go see these guys out of state. The show was going as usual, until, out of nowhere, Alvin and the gang bust down the front door. Simon had a shotgun in his hands, Theodore had a baseball bat, and Alvin had brass knuckles on. The gang charged the stage, Alvin grabbing a beer bottle. Alvin hits one of the members over the head with it while Theodore and Simon pinned down the other band members. The crowd was totally freaking out. Alvin then grabbed Simon’s shotgun and stuck it to the head of the lead singer and said something along the lines of, “If I ever see you guys play OUR music again, there will be consequences.” Alvin then fired a shot into the ceiling and the audience went running. I just hid in the bathroom while the whole thing cooled off. When I walked out of the building, there were the chipmunks, smoking cigarettes and drinking stolen beer. I just thought, “screw that” and went home right after that. Crazy stuff, I tell ya.

when i eventually get a stable job ill remember this day as a college neet, sitting in my dark, warm room at 6am in front of my trusty pc, eating a bowl of wet slop with this playing in my earholes, as i think about the personal project ive been grinding out for the past week. life is so, so good...

Rockin' Through The Sludge was a great album! I remember it was recorded live and halfway through the show Alvin dumped an entire pack of ciggys in his mouth! We all sang along to I Love A Rainy Night for the encore......and trust me we wanted Old Brown Shoe by the Beatles (ya know who) after it.

Shame that Say Say Say was pushed out.
