  • Amazon's ABOMINATION known as The Rings of Power has been a MASSIVE loss for the corporation. How much? Time will tell. It has also been the frontlines of the Pop Culture War of late. Delivering a catastrophic loss to the activist Access Media. The damage control and cope has just begun. The good news is we won't see a season 2 for over 2 years. By then, this show will be lost in the void. In this video we cover the single worst defense of this show since it was announced.

This is the Second Age. How much of this did we see in RoP?
Celeborn and Galadriel traveled first to Lindon, where they ruled over a group of Elves as a fiefdom under Gil-galad, the High King of the Ñoldor. Sometime later, they had a daughter, Celebrían. They moved eastward and established the realm of Eregion, or Hollin, which they ruled under Gil-galad. Eregion, to the west of the Misty Mountains near Khazad-dûm, was a prosperous kingdom during this time, and had open trade with the Dwarves. Also, during this time, they made contact with a Nandorin settlement in the valley of the Anduin, later to be known as Lothlórien. Subsequently, when Celebrimbor took over the rule of Eregion, Galadriel left by way of the mines of Khazad-dûm. After the death of King Amdír, in the War of the Last Alliance, and the departure his son Amroth, Celeborn and Galadriel became the Lord and Lady of Lothlórien.
In the Second Age, the Maia Annatar, "Lord of Gifts", guided Celebrimbor and the other Ñoldor of Eregion in the creation of the Rings of Power. *Galadriel had immediate distrust in Annatar, which was later justified when he was revealed to be Sauron* Galadriel counseled Celebrimbor in the hiding of the rings, and when Eregion was attacked, she was entrusted with one of the Three Rings of the Elves. Her ring was Nenya, the Ring of Water.
Conscious of Sauron's power, and wishing to thwart it, she did not use the powers of her ring as long as the One Ring was in Sauron's hands. However, during the Third Age, when the One Ring was lost, she put it to good use protecting the borders of her realm, for the powers of her ring were protection, preservation, and concealment from evil.

The man would have roasted the Jackson trilogy as well despite it being a good attempt in good faith, his son even said as much. @@Norvik_-ug3ge Yes, it's an educated guess on what his father would have thought based on a lifetime of discussions with him about this subject. You would need very good reasons to contradict his opinion. Tolkien was a purist as it's obvious even from the brief letter excerpts shown in the video or how he roasted some foreign editions of The Hobbit simply because he didn't like the depiction of characters in the cover picture. Imagine what he would have thought of changing characters personalities or making some of them into comic relief (Gimli) or superheroes (Legolas), not to mention plot and language or even more serious alterations that I'm not going to go into detail about but I'm sure you can easily find (and I don't mean removing scenes of characters, that's perfectly understandable when adapting a long book). We may speculate he could have liked the depiction of Lothlórien and Galadriel (at least until her brief transformation into a Marvel villain in the mirror scene), but I think that's all. There are too many breaking changes in Jackson's films (and I think he showed his true colours in the Hobbit trilogy: he went out of his way to include things like Radagast's rabbit sleigh, to mention a minor one).

@@firebreathingmoonbeam3961 Well, I didn't even mention RoP. I was responding to somebody who said that we don't know what Tolkien would have thought about the Jackson trilogy and that his son was just guessing. It's the same argument that Amazon has made about RoP and can be rebutted just as easily. Actually we can be pretty sure because 1: Tolkien himself expressed his opinion about taking liberties in adaptations multiple times and 2: Christopher Tolkien, apart from being his son, was quite involved in his father's stories since he was a child. It's quite difficult to believe he would have misjudged his father's reactions.
Of course there's no comparison between Jackson's LotR trilogy and RoP, but I think many people are mistakenly taking the film trilogy as a baseline just because they were too young to be critical of the liberties taken in the adaptation (many probably read the books afterwards, so the changes didn't register so heavily). There were many elements that were heavily criticised when the films premiered, but eventually a consensus was reached that they were good films even if they had their flaws as adaptations (and of course there wasn't social media then, so the level of criticism was self-contained within traditional media and blogs, etc.; not so with the Hobbit trilogy, that in my opinion puts to rest the idea of Jackson as a respectful adapter of Tolkien).
The problem with RoP is that it`s not good enough as a story to make us forget about the liberties taken in the adaptation that are too great anyway. But let's not pretend that the Jackson trilogy wasn't also betraying Tolkien's spirit in many occasions. It's the same with Star Wars prequel trilogy, now there are many people defending it in comparison with the sequels, mostly people young enough not to remember why the original trilogy was so good for its time and what a disappointment it mostly was for people of my age.

I have studied Tolkien for decades. This series is, at best, a parody of Tolkien's work. This series is more of a "what if" as in "what if Galadriel did this or did that." Peter Jackson had to take liberties in certain parts of his wonderful trilogy of movies. However, for the vast majority of the time, he stayed inside Tolkien's world. Tolkien has massively laid out what he would expect from people who would come after him in adapting his work for TV, movies, radio, etc. This current Amazon series violates his statements to the point of be almost the very antithesis of Tolkien's expectations. So... hard pass for this Tolkien fanatic.

There were even hints that half-orcs existed, i.e. there was co-existing and intermingling.
But PJ turned them into absurdly deformed and brainless mutants/zombies, because I guess the accurate depiction of Tolkien's orcs would not look scary or "evil" enough for the modern audience, and that general was one of the most comically mangled and deformed ones.
Furthermore, Tolkien's orcs are quite obviously tribal people, and they don't have "generals" or any "military theory" for organized armies - they fight like barbaric clans or nomads from our history (like gauls, hunns or mongols) and get more organized and coherent in warfare ONLY when driven by a powerful will and mind (like Morgoth, Sauron or Nazgul King). And that was Tolkien's idea - orcs would not be able to gather such force, to organize and conduct a proper large-scale siege of Minas Tirith on their own, and that's why they were led by Nazguls on behalf of Sauron, not some "orc general".

"Rings of Power" can be endlessly scolded for a ton of minuses, but one plus of the series cannot be ignored - the series never cease to cause laughter!
For example, in last series it is very funny to watch how a great elven blacksmith, with thousands of years of experience, does not know the basics of blacksmithing. Or how they try to make us feel sorry for Galadriel giving away his brother's dagger, while we don't care about his character, because we only saw him in two flashbacks. Or how an order of evil-"Not Nazgûl"-girls who mysteriously walked in the shadows throughout the season turn into a swarm of butterflies in a second (I swear one of the funniest TV deaths I've ever seen!).
And finally, the main fun is the plot twist with the fact that Halbrand is ... Sauron! The 1.5 people who didn't guess this on the second episode he was in were very surprised! After that, even the twist that the DEFINITELY NOT GOOD WIZARD actually turns out to be a good wizard only brings out a small smile.

If she did she wouldn't have let the showrunners insult the Irish, Irish travellers in the UK and the English. They brush it off as unintentional but if they are so bloody knowlegable about Tolkien's work, the global audience and most important, what is/isn't racist/bigotted, they should be prostrating themselves begging forgiveness. Technically, "The Rings of Power" is part of the title of one of the chapters in "The Silmarillion" so I'm not sure how are they even allowed to use this as their title.

Technically they have the rights to that

@@smileishousin I believe they only have the rights to The Lord of The Rings and the appendences, not the Silmarillion itself. However, I think it's a mute point.

The term rings of power is referenced in LOTR, therefore usable.

I'm not a Tolkien scholar and I have not read the books completely from cover to cover, but I have read and own Hobbit, Beren and Luthian, Children of Hurin and Fall of Gondolin and it awoke a longing for Tolkien's works in me so much so that I've watched the extended movies 5 times in the last month and listened to the BBC radio drama and I'm devouring all information and works by Tolkien as much as I can and believe me I will be reading and rereading the books. That being said, I watched ep 1&2 and I cannot bring myself to watch the rest it pains me mentally and spiritually just watching the reviews and breakdowns and it pained me more struggling through the first 2 episodes. So just like the Dis(aster)ney's Star Wars trilogy and the horrible series adaptation of Pratchett's Watch (which I can also not bring myself to finish) I will go about my life not acknowledging these blatant money grabbing, woke, politically correct poster-children.
