- Dress for excess. Step into the wardrobe of BABYLON with costume designer Mary Zophres. #BabylonMovie #12NightsOfBabylon
From Damien Chazelle, Babylon is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

This film could be a lot of things but definitely not a story set in the 1920s. As a 20s enthusiast I was outraged by all the fashion inaccuracies. When I first heard that it was set in the 20s and saw the looks of Margot Robbie, I thought oh, you mean that it is set in the 2020s, right?
That's one of the main things i don't like about the film, there's practically nothing about the fashions which screams 1920's at us. The dancing too, is in no way 1920's it looks more 1990's. I never at any point felt i was watching a film set in the mid 1920's. It had more a feel of a fantasy film, with aspects taken from the 1960's through to the 2020's.
Other than this, the film, i felt was a mess. It was around an hour too long, they tried too hard to have everything going on at once and even though the film lasted over 3 hours it seemed rushed, and that was with a 30 minute 'party' scene at the start, and that awful 8 or 9 take scene when filming the talkie.
LoL ok.
Even if you hate movie itself you have to admit on a technical level it looks F*cking AMAZING! I meann LOOK AT COSTUMES! 2/12 Nights Of Babylon so far and I've already seen 2 Guaranteed Category noms: Production Design/Costumes. LET'S GO!

I couldn't accept that i was watching a film set in the 1920's. There was very little in the film to suggest that time period. Costumes in the main were very modern, Nellies hair style was as far removed from the 20's as you could possibly get. Yes Women had long hair in the 20's but not styled like that, her 'boots' were not 20's fashion. It was as though they'd thrown a 2020's woman back in time 100 years. Her dance style was certainly not 1920's. There's no evidence of any dancing like that back then.
They've gone in with an idea and destroyed it. They didn't want it to look 'typical' 1920's?? Well, they succeeded there, because it didn't look 1920's at all. It's an excuse for lazy film making. I can understand getting fashions wrong or general styles wrong if a film is set 200 - 2000 years ago. Much of it is interpretation. But to mess up so badly with a film set only 100 years ago, where we have photographs and film of that period is unforgiveable in all honesty. They could've made a brilliant film about the transition from silent to talkies, instead they embarrassed themselves by making this. It's a vanity project from the director. He's tried to fit too much in, made far too busy and it's backfired on him.
And, o my lord, it wasn´t black and white. How could that happen?
@@sputzelein See if you're going to try and be a smart arse, it helps if your at least half smart to begin with, otherwise you're just an arse.
So basically, the idea is to do a period piece that doesn’t look like a period piece by using the excuse that some of the characters are just bucking all the trends of the time and doing their own thing? I have nothing against that. Really, the costumes look cool. It’s actually the hairstyles that are throwing me more like … ok, bucking the trends but … like … how does Nellie predict so well how women will wear their hair in 100 years?
I liked this movie a lot and highly recommend watching it in the theater, but one of my complaints was exactly this! Upon second viewing, it made more sense. Nellie is a stubborn (to a fault) wild woman who only wants to operate by her own rules. And part of it is that her hair is always long and messy (ahem, even though it still looks stylized). At some point in the movie, it’s implied that she even got plastic surgery and I couldn’t tell the difference 😂. I think if her hair was a bit more authentic to the late 20s, I could accept all the modern type acting. Still, despite all my criticisms, I highly enjoyed the film and am glad I saw it on the big screen.
Her hair annoys me so much! I understand its meant to be wild but it should have looked a bit more 20s, because at the end of the day, even if they are trying to buck trends and do their own thing they are still going to look a little bit of their own time. Also, the makeup, even the barefaced looks look modern?? I think saying that you want it not to look like your typical period piece is another way of saying, I'm going to be lazy. Sorry, I just don't personally think they have been creative with the costumes or hair/make up that all. Bar a few exceptions.
I love how everyone on here is also waiting for Scream 6😂 DROP IT WERE READY! #ScreamVI

I wonder if Jack Conrad's costumes are based on what Douglas Fairbanks actually wore?
Entoss
WHY IS NELLY'S HAIR LONG?!?!?!?! Why do these costumes like... look so modern, like trashy lingerie??! I see a few actual references, but mostly like... trying to modernize their "it" girl as if we can't approach her where she exists in this time. I'm going to see it, but I know I'll have bones to pick with the costuming. YOU TRY TOO HARD WHEN YOU TRY TO MAKE IT "UNLIKE ANYTHING."
what
Diego Calva looks and sounds like a younger Javier Bardem?
Lady Fa Zhu and Elinor St. John look very Edwardian instead of 1920s, Nellie LaRoy looks way too 2020s does 1970s to the point where she was literally wearing bellbottoms and platforms when she overheard the drop dead gorgeous voice of reason Manny Torres plans to reinvent her.

First comment
No offense meant to Mary Zophres, because she’s a talented costume designer with a distinguished career, but I don’t think Babylon is her best work. Her statement of making the clothes “unlike anything you’ve ever seen on the screen” is not backed up by what’s actually on there. And I agree with previous comments that Margot Robbie looks wildly out of place. Obviously you can be anachronistic when it comes to making a period film, but there are better ways to convey a character’s lifestyle and personality that is beyond their time than to make them look like they’re ready for a modern day photoshoot.
I put the blame completely on Chazelle. It seems like by their own admissions that he didn't want to follow the 1920s look, he got what he wanted it looks awful. The costume designer and makeup artist were following directions
