Ugh.. lot of that old school medical is pretty wack.. I never got that training so speaking out of turn just based on what I know of the basic medical kits of the time..
Oh I soooo hope before this video is over you pull some super glue out thar pack! Every basic med kit should have the gel version of super glue.. as someone who does physical work around sharp stuff everyday.. I can tell you there is not replacement for super glue. The liquid stitch the er gives you is the same thing minus a couple chemicals. It seals a pretty bad non tq type bleed fast.. and because of the chemicals it’s self sterilizing if the wound..
At first it burns a little but after you use it weekly for years it’s no more painful then putting on a bandaid for a paper cut lol..
Oh I keep electrical tape.. can’t count how many times I’ve had to use a dressing or gauze and electrical tape to seal up a bad bleed (like a cut from broken glass type had cut or slicing your arm or leg or fingers with a box cutter) electrical tape is 10x better then duct tape for medical use.. one it stretches a little so you can get compression from it like a tq and also it rips one handed easier as well as leaving way less residue and being easier to remove/replace..
I ran a power planer over my finger in a hospital once took the entire tip of my finger off and a paper towel and some electrical tape got me down to my work truck where I could use the super glue.. sprayed blood over a 15x15 section of hospital hallway and in 39mm was back to work cause if electrical tape and super glue 😂😂
Las time I got stitches I was a minor.. I’ve been using super glue and electrical tape for the past 30 years wo issue..
Hell I ran a powered metal saw through half my finger to the bone and back to work in 20min after some glue and then wrapping it with some padding and electrical tape for cushion..
Prob starting to sound like someone who’s super unsafe. I’m not that just how dangerous my work is now and although I have cut resistant gloves on me at all times I also have to work with small items and no mater how good the glove you can’t use very small items well or at all..
End result I buy superglue like marines buy crayons😂

A Video about "oldschool" medical stuff would be awesome!
Also in your last video about dealing the heat outdoors you talked about webbing shirts whitch are meant to be worn under the clothes. At a online surplusstore i was able to get a oldschool thick webbing t shirt with a high collar that is made out of cotton. I was told that it was made for winter conditions to add/trap a layer of warm air but in my case the opposite was the case. Constantly i've had the feeling of a light coolness as long as i was moving around. Only when i use the webbing-shirt in my sleepingbag the concept of trapping a layer of warm air seems to work.
Now I’m waiting for the summer heat to give it a try and wear this shirt under my usual clothing to find out if it works like i guess. I think it would work out just fine to create a space in whitch air can flow in and out of the clothing and cool down the body.
One thing at last…the thick quality of this surplus cotton webbing shirt is outstanding and I think it is be a very important part when it's about to create a proper space.
Keep on keeping on…all the best from Berlin🤜🏻🤛🏻

Cotton does hold moisture, so its a great choice in hot, dry climates.
A lot of channels do not recommended cotton, but that is just a bias as most of those content creators are in wet/colder places. A cotton bandana or baseball cap (soaked in water from time to time) has been my best friend in dry heat. I may get some shirt like that to try it out

Best way to close small wounds especially on the hands/fingers I found it to be super glue. Simple as cleaning with a bit of water, aligning the cut/wound walls, pinch, cover it with super glue, wait for it to harden a couple of minutes, that's it! Keeps the wound closed and prety clean, and it heals under the protective cover.

Very well put together video, real world stuff with experience.
High strength NSAID (ibuprofen) is great at reducing inflammation which is a contributing factor to pain. But not ideal if dehydrated as reduces blood flow to kidneys, but that would be over several days use. Like you said, a 2.4G loading dose will be suffice to get you out of the woods. Alongside I would have acetaminophen (paracetamol), together refers to the “pain-pack”. And an anti-histamine of some sort. Basic pharmacology goes a long way.

Love the vids Randall. I was 91A (68W now) medic/flight medic 1988-1993 and 20+ year career paramedic in civilian life. I still carry old school cravats and the old trauma dressings and ladder wire splints and SAM splints in my household and car first aid kits. I've brought friends and kids into ER a number of times when things have happened off duty and always get ooooohs and aaaahhhs from ER staff. There have certainly been good advances in equipment since there and it is good stuff - better than we had back then. But make no mistake, that old school stuff WORKS. The whizbang stuff of today may be better for the purposes for which it is made,, but the old school was very versatile and could be used for many different things.... cravats being one of those multi-purpose pieces of gear that comes at a very small cost of weight and space. Good gear is great to have but the most important factor will always be critical thinking skills and know-how to be able to use what you have to good use ( improvise, adapt and overcome as Gunny Highway would say) I would certainly love to see a future vid on the equipment used back in the day.

I’ve been a mechanic for quite a few years and been using electrical tape instead of a band aid for ever(on my fingers). Tape works great. Super glue works good for more serious cuts too. Stops bleeding and will close up the wound. I’ve had to do that before too.
Love the simplicity. Love the channel!! Great information!

Good little compact kit. I carry something similar but a bit more comprehensive, particularly in regards to band aids/dressings etc. It wouldn't be wise to stick tape directly on some wounds. Nice to see someone who prioritises diarrhea too, it's literally "serious s***" if you get that in the wilderness.

This is a great video regarding the use of tape for bandaids. In my desert climate, leaving bandaids in any active first aid kit outside a medicine cabinet is a disaster. The packaging ultimately fails especially in the heat around here which is made worse by the vibration of a truck or hauling in a pack. Whenever I’m out and about there’s at least one firearm, so I carry a CAT. My pack first aid kit just got alot smaller, and the super bulky/heavy IFAK just moved to the truck. Thanks to this video problem(s) solved.

Just like you were saying with the tape on a wound. I've never been able to use Band-Aids either. In construction you constantly get cut or banged up. But instead of using a Band-Aid we always just used a piece of our shirt and electrical tape. A piece of shirt absorbs the blood and keeps it from the adhesive of the tape and the electrical tape is waterproof and stays together the whole time it doesn't fall off like a Band-Aid.

any bleeding in combat from limbs, tourniquet went on, tightened only to the degree necessary to stop bleeding. Reassess later. if the bleeding was stopped, or closer inspection out of the danger area reveals it to be a non life threatening injury, you could take it off (assuming bleeding stopped, or a more appropriate bandage was applied first). Taking off a tourniquet is No different than what happens after you're arm or leg goes numb from resting on it weird for too long. Tourniquets have been able to be removed with no long term issue to limbs up to something like 26hrs or more after being applied.
Blows my mind all these years later we still can't get people to understand these basic ideas.

I will start carrying electrolytes. I drink lots of water,so I may need to do electrolyte replenishment. Don’t carry much for blisters because I only wear shoes/boots that fit me and have been worn long enough to make sure they fit. Plus, I pretty much only wear Darn Tough socks, mostly wool blend, but wear their Coolmax blend if it’s hot enough to sweat. Noticed in your backpacking load out you don’t wear the Darn Tough socks wool in hot weather. You might try a pair of their Coolmax socks. Lifetime warranty. Good tip on Chapstick. Great channel. Just curious if anyone keeps/ever takes any small first aid handbooks out on hikes when ya' go out. I took a heart saver/cpr course years ago, it was a few days of fairly extensive training, and we all received a small handbook (very useful), that included incidences from falling scenarios, drowning scenarios, heart attack and stroke scenarios, bone fractures and possible spinal/neck injures and how to immobilize the neck/spine, cuts/open wounds - not extensive, but all kinds of 'general' or common health/injury first aid stuff. It's probably only about 20 pages. A small and lightweight (about the size and weight of a folded up road map), general first aid manual. I take mine every time, it just stays in my kit. Refresher/reminder material to have on hand just in case, and it's useful/positive/beneficial reading material; could be real handy in a forgetful panic state of mind situation. I'm gonna' look for those electrolyte packets tomorrow and keep them in my kit always. Great advice. VERY IMPORTANT. It doesn't matter how much water you drink if you can not replenish the electrolytes while dehydrating. Your vital organs will shut down once they can no longer contribute to regulating your body's core temperature, and you will eventually lapse into a coma without replenishing electrolytes. Excellent video!

I have to admit, my biggest regret in life was not being able to continue with my career in the military. Hell I didn't even get to start it. When I went into the military about 20 years ago it was right at the end of desert Storm and the entire military was demilitarizing. And because of this they had stopped just taking anyone like they were taking and only became selective of who they chose to admit. However, this is also during the time when army recruiters got in a shit ton of hot water because they were pushing through candidates that had no business being in the military so they could get prizes money cars whatever the incentive was to put more people in. Well I just happened to be one of those people. Now it had nothing to do with anything other than when I was 16 years old I broke into a lawn mower shop because my mother who was disabled was fixing to be evicted from our home because she couldn't pay the rent. So me my brother and one of our friends went out and broke into a lawn mower shop in the middle of the night. I'm not saying it was a smart thing to do or a good thing to do. But it was something that we ended up doing and got caught. And because of that misdemeanor I was not allowed to go into my MOS of choice that I had already picked which was 95 bravo military police. The recruiter probably knew this too. I got all the way to fort McClellan Alabama and went through all the processing in. Just before I was supposed to go down range several people were called in to the captain's office. I was told I could not go down range and serve in my MOS of choice because I had a misdemeanor when I was a kid. Even though the judge had told us, me and my brother, that our record would be expunged at the age of 18 and no one would know about it as long as we didn't get in trouble. Well he meant everybody but the government. So when they told me the only thing I could be in my unit at the time was a cook I said no I don't want to be a cook. I got in here to build a career and be able to get out and continue a career. I'm not getting out of the army so that I can work at McDonald's. He took a fence to the McDonald's thing trying to say that you know their food is different from McDonald's. I said oh yeah it is different from McDonald's it's even worse! I said I don't need to be trained on how to cook slop I can do that all on my own. Then he tried pulling that double talk BS with me. And started telling me Oh well I signed a contract for 8 years. If I try to get out I could be charged. I looked him in his eye and I pointed it out and I said you know what you're not as smart as you think you are. And he almost lost his mind! I said I'm not as dumb as the rest of the people you talk to, and I read my contract. It said if I did not get the MOs that I chose I could either choose another MOS or I can choose to get out. And since the only thing you can offer me is to work in a slop kitchen I guess I'm going to have to choose to get out. In hindsight I kind of wish I had never gotten out because I enjoy that type of stuff. However, being a cook in the military would not have offered me any of the stuff that I like. I'm not going to be carrying a rifle, I'm not going to be out in the shit, and I'm definitely not going to be doing anything exciting other than peeling potatoes and cooking goulash. The only reason I went MP was so that I could just get into the military because I had only a ged. Once you're in the military you can choose to go into the regular military which is what I had planned to do. Of course it didn't work out because of my crappy recruiter that just put me in for his markup. but every time I hear one of these former military guys talking about the unit they served in and the stuff they did it just makes me wish I had gotten the opportunity to do what I wanted to do in the military. And I had been planning for years to go in the military. I even went through ROTC and the whole nine yards. I've learned all the things I think I needed to learn. I had completely memorized the entire phonics alphabet at the age of 15. I was a little bit of a fat boy when I was in my beginning teenage years but tried to lose the weight and did through PT in ROTC. I'm not going to lie, when I got out of the military I was fucking devastated. I probably spent a good year bumming around just completely pissed at the world. Anyways sorry about the rant. As I hear you talking all I can think is these guys got to live the opportunity of a lifetime and now I can only relive it with them through CZcams videos. It just kind of burns the heart.
